I would appreciate any help with this:
born: Katarzyna Reinpold on 12 Sept, 1886 in Kamionka Strumilowa, Dobrotwor, L'viv, Galicia
The family story is that she moved to Yugoslavia several years before immigration and may have immigrated from Bosnia, although she claims to be an ethnic Pole. Her census reports indicates she immigrated either in 1904 or 1905 and it appears she came quickly to Cleveland. Family reports also that she traveled with her brother John who moved to Wisconsin.
I think I found her brother in Milwaukee and he is reported as John Raibolt. It looks like he came in Oct. 1904 on the SS Friedrich der Grosse from Bremen and claims to have been born in Herzegowac, Jugolslavia. His first attempts to apply for naturalization were denied because of misinformation but he later reports it as poor moral character. He is given citizenship Oct. 30, 1945 in Milwaukee. Petition no. 25894 Alien Reg. 5430326.
Katarzyna become "Katy" or Katherine in her earliest years in the US. She must have been reasonably well educated because she spoke five languages and was employed as a translator for several years.
Katarzyna married Stanley Nowakowski in 1908 and she was naturalized with his on May 25, 1917. She reports being a subject of Russia-Poland. Her certificate number is 784468 vol 38 no. 2682 She was 30 when naturalized but 49 when naturalization was recorded.
I'm hoping to find her passenger manifest and perhaps any petition that might have her information on it. I am trying to put together a possible scenario of why she took the Bosnia and Yugoslavia route. The family notes say she moved "because of war". It does not appear that her parents immigrated with her- just the brother John. One possibility for them is that they were involved in rebellion efforts in some part of central Europe and John lied on his early forms to avoid the possibility of being linked to anarchy. That is just a theory.
BTW- that last name- Reinpold is taken from the birth record I have in my possession but she spelled it Raypold in her documents. Her brother was John Raibolt in WI but Johann Reipolt on the manifest.
Thank you so much if you wish to take up this challenge!
