I am trying to find the date and location of Charles Tass' (b. 1865, Groede, Holland) first arrival in the USA. His parents, Josephus Tas, b. 1827, and Sophia Reiteko, b. 1830, and four siblings arrived in New York on July 18, 1885, aboard the Leerdam, out of Rotterdam. Charles became a naturalized citizen on Mar 11, 1893 in Cresco, Iowa. He apparently traveled back to Europe and then arrived back in New York on Feb 10, 1894, on the Rotterdam; port of departure: Boulogne Mer. Any assistance in this search would be most appreciated.

On the 1900 census in Iowa, he is married to Leona and it says he arrived in 1888. It says here that he has been 12 years in the USA but you can see quite clearly on the original that this has been changed from 11.

On the 1910 Census, it says he arrived in 1889.

So it seems that either 1888 or 89 would be right.

I tried a Castle Gardens search but nothing came up for those dates. I also tried just typing in TASS for 1888 to 1889 on the Castle Gardens site but still nothing came up.

Thank you for you assistance in this search. 1888 seems logical since he was naturalized in 1893 and it is usually a 5-year process. However, nowhere can I find the specific date of arrival nor the ship he came on, which is the mystery that several of us are trying to solve.
