Thank you so much for your reply....after I posted this, I actually found his naturalization record in the Passaic County Clerks Office. According to this, he indeed was a fireman, so Theodor Christian Lutzhoft and Christian Lutzhoft must be the very same person. This record also states that he came to the US July 9th 1912 on the ship Hellig Olav from Copenhagen, and he was naturalized as an American citizen November 5th 1913.
I've also found his birth in Kongens Lyngby on March 13th 1884, but thanks once more....
I've also found him in the Politiregister, but as you have, only on Rebekkavej in 1906. I'm not quite sure yet if he's related to the Aksel Peter Lutzhoft Christiansen family, but I think so - the name Lutzhoft isn't very common in Denmark either.
Finally, no I don't have the surname on Eleanor Evelyn's mother...it only says Ellen Josephina when shes confirmed in Ugerlose Church in 1927. She was placed in fostercare with farmer Hans Christiansen and his wife Ane Kristine in Brandholt, Ugerlose parish in Denmark, after her parents died when she was very little. They are not related to Theodor Christian Lufthoft but might be to the mother ? I'm pretty sure now that Ellen Josephina must be Danish as Eleanor Evelyn is born 7½ months after Theodor Christian arrived at New York in July 1912. So most likely Ellen Josephina arrived together with him.

Again, thanks so much for your help and interest

Laila Dencker

Hi,

I did take a look for you and could not find Theodor Christian Lutzhoft on any passenger records at all. In fact, the only US record I found that may possibly be him was a Christian Lutzhoft listed as a fireman in the Paterson NJ directories for 1913 - 1916. Not much help, I know. And I only found one politietsregister for him dated 9 May 1906 which only gives one address and then 'udtrukket' on Nov 1 1906. The address is Rebekkavej 13 so I looked at the 1906 census for that address. I didn't find Theodor there, but there was a family that consisted of Aksel Peter Lutzhoft Christiansen, his wife Camilla and daughter Kamma - relatives?

You've probably already found the birth/baptism record for Theodor Christian 'Lytzhøft ' born 13 March 1884 in Kongens Lyngby parish? Parents were Hans Christian Lytzhøft and Kirsti Nilsson, who were married (Gladsaxe sogn) 8 May 1881.

Do you have Eleanor Evelyn Lutzhoft's confirmation record? Does it give her mother's maiden name? Do you know if Ellen Josephina was American or Danish? That information may help in searching the records.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,

J Murphy

I'm doing some research for a friend, and I hope you can help me. His maternal grandmother Eleanor Evelyn Lützhoft was born February 27th 1913 in Paterson, New Jersey, and according to the information when she's confirmed in 1927 in Denmark, she was baptized at home January 12th 1915, her parents belonging to Calvary Methodist Church in Paterson.
Her parents should be Theodor Christian Lutzhoft and Ellen Josephina....they die in 1915 and 1916, according to the information I have. I believe him to be Danish, and possibly born on March 13th 1884, but I can't find his emigration from Denmark or immigration to the US. I hope somebody can help me with this - and possibly also with confirming the birth/baptism of Eleanor Evelyn Lutzhoft, and the deaths of her parents.

Many regards, Laila in Denmark....

Well, I guess I can conclude that he might have told the truth after all. Even if I found him in the Danish Feb 1890 census, he could still be a US Citizen.

I know that he died before 1931, so there is a possibility that he died before 1910 as well. This is going to be a tough one to crack.

Thank you “falsterden” you have been a great help.
Danish census in 1885 was taken in February? I suppose in that case he could return to the USA anytime after the census that February of 1885.

He could be in the USA two years and then file "Declaration of Intention to Become a US Citizen", then be eligible to receive citizenship three years later, in about March 1890 - a five-year process total.

See Naturalization Process,
LINK:
http://www.archives.gov/research/naturalization/naturalizati...

In any case he certainly could have been a US citizen in Feb 1901 when he was living in Denmark.

I thought the record I noted and you opened was a request for a copy of papers that had been previously received, but lost.

I suppose he could have died before the 1910 census - among other possibilities.
Re: Denied entry to the US?

Thank you for your thoughts.

I’m trying to figure out, if it was possible for him to be in United States for five consecutive years. He left Denmark the first time June 1880 through Hamburg, was back in Denmark Feb 1885, he was present in both census. Did not find him in Feb 1890 census, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t in Denmark at the time, next census is Feb 1901 where he lived with his father. That is a window of 15 years he could have been in the US, but there are not records of him going back to the US until 1902, not in the Danish Emigration Record database you are referring to, nor in ancestry.com for passenger lists.

If he in fact was in United States he could have arrived approx 1886, been there 5 years, which would make it approx 1891, before he could file the “Declaration of Intention to Become a US Citizen”, add 3 years before the citizenship is granted. The period to look for citizenship would then be 1894-1900.

If the record you found is him, then he did lie about being a US Citizen in 1902, you don’t apply again in 1911, if you already got citizenship. The record you found is for a H. A. Pederson, Cir. Ct. Kane Co, Ill, that is all the information stated on the record. It still could be him, but I don’t really know how to be sure.

So if he told the truth a citizenship would have been granted between 1894-1900, well that narrows it down a bit, I just think it is weird I can’t find him anywhere after 1902 in the United States.
Maybe some other volunteer researcher will find the answer.

Some thoughts:

An immigrant must live in the USA continuously for five years before he/she can become a citizen. The immigrant must file a "Declaration of Intention To Become a US Citizen" three years before citizenship is granted. This rule was in effect also at the times Holger A. Petersen came to the USA.

I don't know why he would lie about having citizenship papers, as he could be admitted to the USA as a non-citizen also. Some persons were excluded from immigrating, such as the feeble-minded or people ill with tuberculosis or those who might be unable to support themselves. Such persons would be admitted if they were already US citizens of course.

Holger was a cook, a single man of middle age. No obstacle to his entry is noted on the Ellis Island passenger manifest.

On the Ellis Island passenger manifest, he gives his final destination as New Haven, Connecticut. I did not find his declaration of intention or his naturalization papers in Connecticut.

===========================================================
Danish Emigration Record 1902

Navn:	Petersen, Holger Amandus	Stilling:	Kok
Alder:	43	Bestemmelsessted:	N.Y.
Kontrakt nr.:	259800	Forevisningsdato:	9/24/1902
Fødested:	Kjøbh.
Denied entry to the US?

I have a question in regards to the notes on a passenger list.

Holger Amandus Petersen (born May 1, 1859, Copenhagen) entered United States twice, the first time on June 23, 1880 through Hamburg, but where back in Denmark according to the 1885 Danish census, in Copenhagen, not found in 1890 Danish census, but live with his father in 1901. I found him trying to enter United States a second time, departure from Copenhagen September 24, 1902, but on the “List or Manifest of alien immigrants” it says he claims to be a US Citizen, and that he lost his papers. Well it is possible he could have gone back to the US 1886-1900, he consistently says he lived in the US but I have not been able to back that up.

Would he have been denied entrance to the US? If so how can I find out? Did they then just take his word for it; I have not been able to find any more information about him since this entry.
Hi - still looking? Maybe this is your family?

They are living in Fuglslev Mark in Fuglslev sogn, Djurs Sønder, Randers, Denmark.

Fuglslev sogn (parish) is adjacent to Tirstrup sogn. It is also next to Lyngby sogn, Feldballe sogn, and Nørager sogn - all mentioned in the 1880 census below. Sounds like the family moved a lot, but these places are all relatively close together in Djurs Sønder herred, Randers amt.
MAP:
http://www.dis-danmark.dk/kort/kortrand.htm

1880 Danish Census
Randers, Djurs Sønder, Fuglslev, Fuglslev Mark, Et hus, 10, FT-1880, D3619
Niels Sørensen Skaarup 25 married Husfader and Eier, Arbejder i Agerbruget born in Lyngby sogn, Randers amt
Severine Sørensen born Sørensen 21 married his wife born in Feldballe sogn, Randers amt
Søren Friis Sørensen 2 their child born in Nørager sogn, Randers amt
Marta Marie Sørensen 1 their child born in Fuglslev Sogn, Randers Amt

http://www.dis-danmark.dk/forum/read.php?1,544640,544640

A volunteer on Genforum has done the research for this family, per your query there, identifying the family in the USA and from there tracing back to Christian's family in Denmark. Thought I'd let you know so you can post a reply at Genforum, thanking the volunteer. (at times it seems the notifications don't come through to one's email, I don't know why)
LINK:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/denmark/messages/18232.html

The family was found in Harendrup (town), Harndrup sogn, Vends herred, Odense amt, Denmark; Christian's parents were blacksmith Hendrick Jørgensen and Anne Catrine Christensdatter. So Christian is the son of this Hendrick (Hendrick's son) - and this Hendrick is the source of the family surname Henriksen.

The 1880 census in Cleveland (posted at Genforum) shows Christian's first son named Jurgen C. Hendrickson - so Jurgen/Jorgen was a family name.

The 1850 census is posted on Genforum. Here is the 1845 and 1860 Danish Census that I think apply. The name may have been Mouritz Carl (or similar) especially if he was indeed born in Denmark.

Happy hunting.

Hi, you'd like the original version of the name "Smith." The same person and same family can appear in written records with their surname spelled different ways. In the "olden days" spelling was not standardized the way it is now.

I guess a person's real last name is the one written on his/her birth certificate. Essentially you are asking to find Nancie and Henry birth records in Denmark.

Smidt and Schmidt are both variations found in Danish records. Did you want links to information so you can learn how to search for them yourself?

The forum can also help you find them. If you will share Nancie's full name and date of birth, and Henry's full name and date of birth, and where they lived in the USA, the forum might be able to help you. Share as much USA information as you can; it's even useful to say you've searched for certain records but didn't find them (such as marriage and death certificates and naturalization records - these are where we look for their place of origin and exact birth day/month/year and parents' names).

Without the above, it is impossible to positively identify your couple.

The name Henry Smith sounds a bit (to me) like an Americanized version of a German name. That's just a gut reaction - he could be from anywhere in Denmark. (Your thoughts?) The above record is for a man born in Slesvig. The Duchy of Slesvig was under Danish rule until 1864, when Prussia invaded and captured the duchies of Slesvig and Holsten. Slesvig became Danish again in 1921, in the aftermath of World War I. Holsten remained German. Lots of history available on this - point being that sometimes we find that a German sounding name belongs to a Dane who lived in Denmark in southern Jutland near the German border.

I am back in an edit to delete the Henry Smith candidates I used to show you how important a date of birth and location
are in identifying a person.
Thank you for all the info. I have looked it over and you have given me a lot to think about as we'll as some hints about my ancestors.

Unfortunately, I do not have dates for my great grandparent's birthdays, but according to info I found in the 1900 census, bothe Nancie and Henry were born in 1861, in Denmark. They came to the USA in 1883. They lived in Bridgeport Ct, in 1900 and lived there for the rest of their lives. Henry was still alive at the time of the 1940 census, but Nancie had died by then.
With this info I was able to find info on my grandfather whose name I did not know until recently. It appears he was born on 14 June 1882. That would make his birthplace as Denmark. One census says this, however, the rest say he was born in the US. His name was Maurice Charles Smith. I was able to find his draft card from WWI. He lived at 147 Alice St, in Bridgeport and was married to Clara or Clare E Smith from Massachusetts.

I have not looked for death certificates or Naturalization records to date.
Both of the examples you gave me do not appear to be my relatives but thanks for the attempt nonetheless!

I am familiar with the history of Schleswig Holstein because I was a history major in college, with a special interest in German history. I am 66 years old and had not thought much about this in recent years so it was a pleasant memory jog! Thanks.

And yes I would appreciate any info or help that the forum might be able to offer.

Finally, I am sorry for not getting back sooner because I was using my time to research using your info and suggestions. You helped a lot.

One odd thing about my grandfather Maurice Charles Smith is that the 1940 census says his first name was Morsis not Maurice?

Hi to you too Dan, This link discusses Soren Monk of Viborg, South Dakota. I didn't research this family, but the link seems to show that Soren Monk family was in Racine, Wisconsin about same time as Christian Jensen Aalborg family (Monk son Charles born in Racine). The Monks seem to be sharing a household with some Jensons/Jensens. The link also discusses other Jensens in Viborg County. It makes senses that Danes immigrating go to family members/friends/old neighbors who previously immigrated. The Danish immigrant community in Racine would have drawn other immigrants to themselves, as a "place to land." There is not necessarily a family relationship just because Soren Monk and Christian Jensen Aalborg both "landed" in Racine before proceeding to Viborg. But...they could be family, it's possible.
LINK:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?Parker::s...

I don't think there is any relation to Christian. I have not found any records showing any siblings of Christian either.

Popped back and here you are. There's another thread on this family (on Genforum) - with those children's births. I meant to post the link. The thread doesn't show the immigration record or Christian Jensen's parents or the family's location in Wisconsin, etc. It could be the answers have been found...

LINK:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/sd/messages/8149.html
Sorry, but no, I didn't find Christian Jensen's birthdate other than that the 1900 census (Swan Lake, Turner, S.Dakota) has it as Aug 1833. There are just too many possibilities - if anyone has an exact date....? or parent's name? sibling? Anything to be able to pin it down a bit more.

I also didn't go through the rest of the parish records for Vor Frue to look for other children. Were there any sponsors names there that might be his family members?

Jo Murphy
Hi - Okay you are still looking. Do you have any kind of estimate or record for his year of immigration?

I searched, after finding your post, and discovered an old post of yours in which respondents gave you almost all the ideas that occurred to me.
LINK:
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/DANISH-ROOTS/2...

In addition to all the resources mentioned, I suggest Dansk Demografisk Database. Also consider posting at Slaegt og Data DIS-Danmark website, "Find Your Relatives in Denmark" forum.

Most often William is Vilhelm in Denmark. The German styling would be Wilhelm. Vilhelm could be a middle name. It's pretty common for a first name to be honorary and the middle name is the name by which one is called.

I think also the University of Minnesota at Duluth wasn't mentioned. They have an archives of old Duluth newspapers. You might be able to find an obituary (with help from a volunteer or staff person). Newspapers like that are gradually being digitized. The Library of Congress has a collection called Chronicling America that is slowly adding Minnesota newspapers circa the era you need. A fabulous search engine takes you to the exact page in the exact issue where your search topic comes up. I did search there for William.

I also did search Dansk Demografisk Database (ddd.dda.dk). At that website I first used the Danish Emigration Archives in Copenhagen 1869-1908. No record is just right.

I next searched the 1850 Danish census in every Danish amt (an amt is like a US state). I found very few Vilhelm Jacobsens of about the right age. Of course there's no way to identify "yours." Also the name could appear differently and I did not search all the variations. If you try, use % as a wild card. For example Ja%obs%n will work for Jacobsen, Jacobson, Jakobsen, and Jakobson. Jacobsson is a Swedish form of the name. If the name appears in the census with a middle name (i.e. Vilhelm Johan Jacobsen) then you'd need a % in the middle to stand in for the middle name.

Here is a link to an online tree that came up when I searched on the parents' names of a "candidate" Vilhelm that I found in 1850.
LINK:
http://www.smidths.dk/gruppe6/865.htm

1850 Danish Census
Frederiksborg, Horns, Draaby, Dråby, Jægerspris, 8, FT-1850, C2902
Jacob Isaaksen	55 Gift Materielkusk born in Mørke Sogn, Holbæk Amt
Maren Kirstine Florin 35 Gift Hans Hustru born in Draabye Sogn, Frb. Amt
Vilhelm Jacobsen 10 Ugift Deres barn (unmarried/their child) born in Draabye Sogn, Frb. Amt <------
Nicoline Jacobsen 3 Ugift Deres barn Draabye Sogn, Frb. Amt

This is not a satisfactory way to search - it's a "work around" approach, but I think that's where we're at, since I presume you've followed up on the many excellent suggestions in your earlier thread.

It's a hard time period. William Jacobsen died after 1885 MN Census and before 1900 US census. That's a black hole, isn't it? I didn't find him at the Minnesota Historical Society's archives for the Minnesota State Census, except for the records you cited, nor in their database of deaths.

Oh I forgot - I found another Vilhelm Jacobsen (of the right age) traveling to America in 1901, a Dane who had already been living in America. He had an exotic occupation (I forget). What was William's occupation?

Here's a Fredrick Vilhelm Jacobsen age 19 in 1860:
http://www.ddd.dda.dk/asp/vis_husstand.asp

The best help, as you well know, would be to find his marriage certificate with parents names, or death certificate, or an obituary, or his immigration record (although those early immigration records don't have much info).

If I've added anything new, great. I wish it were more. All best

A little late to be answering I know. :D

>"I would like to know the difference between the little slashes and dots."< You mean the letters in the Scandinavian alphabets that do not correspond to ours. You are finding that search engines won't pull up your name if you haven't properly inserted that Scandinavian letter.

The solution - Ancestry.com offers a wildcard * Insert the * instead of the Scandinavian letter in your search bars. The * will stand in place of any letter and also in place of no letter. Read about how to use Ancestry.com wildcards on Ancestry website (in the Learning section I would guess).

The Danish Demografisk Database www.ddd.dda.dk , a great site for searching Danish census, uses % as a wildcard.

I don't know if Family Search allows wildcards - I haven't used them there.

I read your post because I have a Frøsig in my Danish family history too.
Need help finding Danish immigrants

I need help finding where my family arrived in America and what ship they may have been on.
Christian Jensen Aalborg (born 1833) arrived in the U.S. around 1865 with his wife Sophia Marie and two sons Abraham and Charles. Their third son, Aaron, was born in Racine, Wisconsin about 1870. I learned this from Aaron's obituary. It also said they stayed in Wisconsin until about 1875 when they left for Turner County, South Dakota. I have been unable to find any records of them in Wisconsin or anywhere else besides South Dakota. I found a passport record for their son Nathan. It says that his father, Christian, was born in Denmark and that he emigrated to the U.S. from the port of Aalborg about 1866. This is about all I've been able to find on their arrival. I think that Jensen was their original surname. I believe they took the surname, Aalborg, when they arrived in South Dakota. They did this I think because their was another Christian Jensen living in the same town when they came to South Dakota. I can't prove this yet, but, I've been told by family that Aalborg was not the original name. Hope someone can help.

Dan

Many Danish migrants went via Britain. Therefore try searching ships leaving British ports rather than Danish ones.

I am also looking for a Jenny Christensen from Copenhagen, Arrived on the ship 'Thingvalla' about 1901. This was a married name. Husband was Axel or Bernhard. Maiden name was Ambech, from Maribo, Denmark. Any relation?
