Hi to you too Dan, This link discusses Soren Monk of Viborg, South Dakota. I didn't research this family, but the link seems to show that Soren Monk family was in Racine, Wisconsin about same time as Christian Jensen Aalborg family (Monk son Charles born in Racine). The Monks seem to be sharing a household with some Jensons/Jensens. The link also discusses other Jensens in Viborg County. It makes senses that Danes immigrating go to family members/friends/old neighbors who previously immigrated. The Danish immigrant community in Racine would have drawn other immigrants to themselves, as a "place to land." There is not necessarily a family relationship just because Soren Monk and Christian Jensen Aalborg both "landed" in Racine before proceeding to Viborg. But...they could be family, it's possible.

It may be worthwhile to check the people buried here against the candidate families in Denmark (since this family was Baptist).

It seems to me this Find a Grave memorial used to say only Christian Aalborg, and that you've added to it, Dan? Very nice.

Surnames: ALBORG
I have found an Abraham ALBORG in the 1900 Census - in South Dakota. He is listed as the stepfather of the Truxes children: Lillie, Bessie, and Harvey. It seems Abraham, a Danish immigrant, married Anna Truxes (the mother of the aforementioned children) sometime around 1894-1900 (Harvey Truxes was born in 1894). I am also having a terrible time tracking down this family, though all three children ended up in Los Angeles. I have found another reference to Anna, which lists her maiden name as "Maddison". Both of her parents were also Danish immigrants. I hope this helps

Dan,

I do not know if you ever found your relative but I came across your post and wanted to offer any one looking for Danish relatives some very useful information. First off, Aalborg is a county (amt in Danish) so your relatives name is Christian Jensen (meaning his father was named Jen) Christian's sisters would have been named * Jensdatter (daughter of Jen). This type of naming began to shift in 186?ish. Your family likely took their county name as their last name.

The best place to look for Danish records is in the Danish archives found at ddd.dda.dk on the www. search Census records and you can find a great deal as the Danish were very good record keepers!

I can help more if you need. Or anyone else for that matter. This source has been a lifesaver and I have actually been to the reading room at the National Archives in Copenhagen, you can email them, they are very helpful.

Good luck!

Ronda

Very kind of you Ronda. An explanation of names was given in the Genforum discussion (link posted previously in this thread). I love ddd.dda.dk too - but that's only the census. Church books listed birth dates and parents, vaccinations, comings and goings from the parish, confirmations, marriages, and deaths, as you no doubt know. These are found at the Danish state archives (jojensagain, who researched this question) is proficient in using this source) online at www.sa.dk/content/us/. Just wanted to expand a little on what you wrote.

I'm curious about your statement re. National Archives in Copenhagen "you can email them, they are very helpful." Can you say more about that. I'm not familiar with people emailing the National Archives (to do look-ups?).
