Axel Andersen arrived from Skibsted Denmark to New York 1923
The brother of my grandmother arrived from Skibsted Denmark to New York aug 27 1923. His brother Anders Peter Andersen bought him the ticket on "United States" to USA from Copenhagen and lived in Irene South Dakota. I have a photo telling me that he might have lived i Centerville. He was born in 1903. I am available for any decendants who would like to connect to Danish decendants of the family. I would also like to help with translations from Danish parish registers. I am an English teacher and have taught English since 1974. Besides I have studied the Danish parish register "Arkivalieronline.dk"

Re: Axel Andersen arrived from Skibsted Denmark to New York 1923
Hi Mackenzie, I think that other poster is referring to Skibsted in Skibsted sogn, Hellum herred, Aalborg amt. In 1901 there is an Anders Peter Andersen in Skibsted. In the census record below, the date is the person's birth day-month-year. The last word in each column is his/her birth place. Gift means married and ugift means unmarried:
1901 Danish Census Jens Peter Andersen 14/4 1858 Gift, husfader, daglejer ved landbrug, Hals Sermine Kristine Andersen 21/7 1862 Gift, husmoder, Fræer Anders Peter Andersen 4/4 1891 Ugift, søn, Skibsted Nora Ingeborg Andersen 19/5 1895 Ugift, datter, Skibsted Ane Magrete Andersen 21/8 1894 Ugift, datter, Skibsted Jens Peter Villesen 2/10 189 Ugift, plejebarn (foster child) Blendstrup Søren Martinus Mortensen 1/5 1898 Ugift, plejebarn, Lyngby Carl Johan Bergstrøm 15/10 1833 Enkemand (widower) logerende daglejer ved landarbejde, Sverrig (Sweden) - a lodger?
You can see the immigration record for this Axel Andersen at the Ellis Island free website. The short version of the information on it is here: First Name: Axel Last Name: Andersen Ethnicity: Denmark, Scandinavian Last Place of Residence: Skibsted, Denmark Date of Arrival: Aug 27, 1923 Age at Arrival: 20y Gender: M Marital Status: S Ship of Travel: United States Port of Departure: Copenhagen Manifest Line Number: 0028
So this Axel was born about 1903 and had a father Jens Peter Andersen (presumably Jens would be his father). He's a different Axel.
When was your Axel born?
You can search the 1940 USA census for free at Ancestry.com.

Re: Axel Andersen arrived from Skibsted Denmark to New York 1923
May I poke my nose in?
I suspect this may be the obit for your Axel dated 12 Feb 1939, Chicago, Illinois (search historical newspapers for Axel Andersen b 1903, d 1939 Chicago) "Axel Andersen of 1645 N Springfield Avenue, beloved husband of Agnes, dear father of Norman and Marie, fond son of Johanna and Niels, brother of Knud....."
and found this in the Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947: Name: Axel Andersen Birth Date: abt 1903 Death Date: 11 Feb 1939 Death Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois Burial Date: 15 Feb 1939 Burial Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois Death Age: 36 Gender: Male Father Name: N. P. Andersen Mother Name: Johana Vegeberg Spouse Name: Agnes
and this in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957: Name: Axel Andersen Arrival Date: 13 Sep 1927 Birth Date: abt 1903 Birth Location: Denmark Birth Location Other: thirsted Age: 24 Gender: Male Ethnicity/ Nationality: Scandinavian Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: United States
...if you look at the image he says that he was born in "Thirsted" (should be Thisted) and that he is going to his brother Knud Andersen in Chicago.
Looking in the parish records for Thisted there is a birth/baptism record for an Axel Andersen born on Sept 28 1902 to Niels Peder Andersen and Johanne Kristine Vegeberg. (it also mentions that his parents were married in Thisted on August 31 1884)
I found that family on the 1901 census (Axel wasn't born yet of course) and the family consisted of:
Niels Peder Andersen, b. Jan 2? 1856 (can't quite make out the day on the census record - twenty something) Johanne Kristine Vegeberg, b. May 30 1863 Elna Margretha b Aug 23 1889 Elfrida Kristine b. Oct 19 1897 Vilhelm b. Oct 22 1894 Petra Johanne b Dec 2 1891 Knud b Oct 13 1900

Re: Axel Andersen arrived from Skibsted Denmark to New York 1923
What a sad story about Axel.
1940 Chicago, Cook, Illinois Address: 1645 W Wood Street Agnes Herderson 29, widow, b abt 1911 Wisconsin, occupation sorter, RXXX mfg Norman Henderson 7 b abt 1933 Illinois Marie Henderson 1 abt 1939 Illinois
"Henderson" is the way the name is indexed on Ancestry.com, but the original handwriting looks like "Andersen."
Another problem with the Ancestry.com transcription: the words "Annunciation Schools Church" are added, but looking at the original, I can see the school roster starts below this family on same census page. The notation does not belong to this family.
This could be Axel Andersen's mother in 1870:
1870 Thisted, Hundborg, Thisted Købstad, Østen Byen, Huus nr. 150, Forhuus, 268, FT-1870, C9281 Christen Brandi Wegeberg 40 married, Huusfader, Sømand [seaman], born in Klitmøller, Thisted Amt Dorthea Christensen 44 married, Huusmoder, born in Thyborøn, Thisted Amt Helene Marie Catrine 13 unmarried, Pige [girl] born in Thisted Johanne Christine 6 unmarried, Pige, born in Thisted <-----
"W" stands in for "V" in German-style spelling.

Re: Axel Andersen arrived from Skibsted Denmark to New York 1923
You're welcome! And mosty thanks to Jo who very kindly sorted this out. I added more in an edit to a previous post. Birth record for Christen Brandi Wegeberg (Axel's maternal grandfather) appears here and says Christen's father full name is not known but he is "Diderich" and came from Norway (Norge). The information includes Christen's birth date and baptismal date ("i Kirken" means he was baptized "in church"). http://www.ddd.dda.dk/kiip/asp/alle_opl.asp?kipnr=K0137&...Gramtrans is an excellent free, online translation program. JO: Where are Niels Peter Andersen and Johanne Kirstine Vegeberg living in 1901? in Thisted Købstad, Hundborg, Thisted, Denmark?
