Castle Garden versus Baltimore arrival

Castle Garden versus Baltimore arrival

I found my immigrant ancestor on both the Baltimore Passenger Lists and the Castle Garden records. Both records give identical information regarding date of arrival, birth year, age, sex, name, ship name and departure location (Bremen).

I don't understand how he can be on both lists. It seems to imply that he arrived in New York AND he arrived in Maryland. I don't know what to think of this or which location to identify as his place of arrival.

Can anyone help me understand this? Thanks.

The same response as you got to this query on genforum. Without seeing the actual manifest, any response would be pure conjecture. Who is the immigrant and what is the manifest information for these voyages?

Data follows. The Castle Garden information is merely from a database. Four ancestry files are attached. (Extracted info:

Name: Karl Masalkowsky;
Arrival Date: 21 Oct 1880;
Age: 8;
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872;
Gender: Male;
Port of Departure: Bremen, Germany;
Ship Name: Leipzig;
Port of Arrival: Baltimore, Maryland.)

I have run into this issue before. I think part of it is the lack of transparency on the part of the Battery Conservancy as to what is included in the Castle Garden database.

In 1855 Castle Garden became America's first immigrant receiving center, welcoming more than 8 million immigrants before it was closed on April 18, 1890. Yet, the search engine at the CastleGarden.org site includes the period 1820-1913. And there is no indication of the Port of Arrival for either the search function or the resulting hits.

SS Leipzig is documented as serving on the Bremen-Baltimore run and I can find no indication in records or newspapers of the era that it ever landed in New York.

My recommendation is to ignore the Castle Garden information.

I did not realize that. Thank you very much for the explanation to resolve the conflicting information.
