Hi there, I hope someone can help me. I seem to have hit a wall. I know that my father was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1947, received his SSN in 1976 and died in NY state in 2000. I applied for his SSN application and did receive it however it does not provide the documentation provided for his application to be approved. Am I wrong in believing that it is not possible to just cross the border and get a SSN just because? What kind of information would he have needed to provide in order to be approved?
My search is for information on his parents (my grandparents) as I do not have much at all. I do not have his Mothers maiden name as the name written on his SSN application differs from the name he gave on my parents marriage certificate from 3 years prior. As far as I know, his father was born and died in Toronto, Ontario.
More confusion comes with my DNA results. I have some 4-5 cousin matches but they are all scattered throughout the southern USA and I am not familiar with any of the names I see. I have not seen any matches in Canada at all, not even on my Mothers side, which I find very odd as I know her family line.
Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
