Re: US immigration details

I haven't found an Elizabeth Bushnell arriving in the USA in any location in 1852. San Francisco, California, is the primary port of entry on the USA West Coast.

The city and county of Los Angeles (Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA) do not possess immigration records.

I also searched the US Census for an Elizabeth Bushnell in Los Angeles but it is difficult to distinguish her. You could add her birth year, add her birth place (I suspect Australia), clarify whether Bushnell is a married name or maiden name, and expand your query with any other details about her, and that would help/might help.

Some US census years asked about date of immigration; some did not. None asked for day/month/year of birth. Most indicate year of birth. The 1900 census is atypical; it asked for both month and year of birth.

Ports of Entry in the USA kept records of immigrants entering the country. The age of the person and approximate year of birth is usually included, but no day/month/year of birth. The birth place or other identifying information is usually not shown on passenger manifests ca 1850s. These details and more were added to passenger manifests in later eras. Often immigrants who arrived in the 1800s are most easily recognizable on a passenger manifest when they are traveling in a family group, where a whole constellation of names appears together. Another help can be an EMIGRATION record from their place of origin that matches an IMMIGRATION record in USA.

If Bushnell is a maiden name, and if Elizabeth married in the USA, Elizabeth's parents would likely be shown on her marriage record. Parents' names are also usually included in a death record. However, not knowing when Elizabeth died, I can't easily predict what you will find. The longer she lived, the more likely it is that a death record was filed in a central repository (such as Los Angeles County in California). Deaths in the 1800s were often recorded in a church or other local archive and many such records are not yet digitized and available online.

Does that answer your question?

Below are some notations for 1852 arrivals of people named Bushnell. These were found on Ancestry.com. The actual immigration document/ship passenger manifest is not shown. Instead, these are excerpts from a book published in 1970, as cited.

Mr. Bushnell
1852
Arrive San Francisco, California, USA
RASMUSSEN, LOUIS J. San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists. Coloma, Calif.: the author. Vol. 4, 1970. 471p. Covers June 17, 1852-January 6, 1853. Includes addenda to vols. 1-3.
US immigration details

I have a strong suspicion that an ancestor of mine, Elizabeth Bushell, emigrated from Australia to US in 1852 aboard the vessel'Adironback'. To verify this, I would like to know if immigration information in Los Angeles would include the date of birth of the immigrant? Are such records available?

Hi genehunter61,

I have been unable to locate records for Vera Ruth Horwood Shinall for her time spent in the U.S. I searched with both Vera and Ruth as a 1st name. The 1950 census will not be out to the public until year 2022.

It's possible she came to the U.S. by way of Hawaii and then to California, or somewhere along the west coast. If she came here with Franklin, they may have shipped to San Diego, CA and he may have been discharged from service there. It's impossible to say. I don't see their names on any ship lists which have been indexed so far.

1800-1959 List of U. S.
Do you know the birth dates (or approx. birth years) of either Franklin Shinall and/or Vera? What was Vera's maiden name? Was she ever heard from again after she left Australia?
I'm thinking maybe she sent a letter after arrival which might have an old address.

I have many people in my tree that came from Europe and I haven't had any locating trouble locating records. But I reseaching my late uncle's late wife, I found her mom came from Australia. What port of entry would she have come into? I am researching Barbara Ellem Kisnaski Sheaves, born about 1899. By 1930 she was married to Willaim Bryant Sheaves with 5 kids (at least 2 more to come later), and living in West Virginia. I would be so happy for any help.
