Thanks for your help. It is hard to find information from so long ago. I have seen my grandmother's signature, too. I'm now trying to find out what was going on in Istanbul's Armenian community around 1919 right before my grandmother left for the USA. Thanks again for your message. Sybil

Hi, Ive just had a quick look for your ancester and found some information under the name PopejAy, not a lot I'm afraid. She married Charles Oscar Popejoy/jay who was born in Cathlamet, Washington and that is where she stated her permanent residence would be at the time that she applied for a passport although at the time she was living in North Dakota due to his naval service. In 1937 she visited France where she had stated that her sister lived, leaving Cherbourg on the ship "Berengaria" and arriving back in New York on 20th August. Her address at that time was given as 523 West 187th Street, New York. I have taken a photograph of her actual signature, if you would like to see it, please reply here. Regards Sue

Armenian grandmother can anyone help?

My grandmother was born in Constantinople on April 5 1904. She married an American sailor when she was 17 and had a baby in Constantinople Feb.24 1922. She had family in Constantinople and France. She went by the name Prapion Nasseret although I think she was a phonetic speller and that might not be correct. Her married name was Prapyan Popejoy. If anyone knows anything about Constantinople and Armenians between 1904 and 1923 (when my grandmother left for America) can you share your knowledge? I just found out about my heritage (my mom-her daughter- was adopted and didn't know her).

Hi Matt,

Could the first one be Amasya? Could be a phonetical mispelling in the record you posted (which I think is fairly common in translating Turkish to English?)

The second one, I'm guessing is Harran. Definitely not as close as the other (and not geographically close to the first city/town you posted), but maybe?

Good luck!

My grandmother came to America in 1923 as the wife of an American-Charles Popejoy. My mother was born in Virginia in 1924 and put up for adoption because Charlie seems to have disappeared. I am searching for any information about my natural grandmother after she came to America. I think she went to New York City from Norfolk VA (where she had my mother). Can anyone help?
She spelled her name phonetically-Prapyan Nasseret

Hi Sonya,
I grew up in Beirut, Lebanon. When i was in fifth grade I read Malkhas' book Zartonk during my summer vacation and I never stopped reading it after that. There were so many pages which were my favorites. He was a fabulous writer, with a great sense of humor and a very pleasing style. Both young and old could read his works, understand them and enjoy them.
One of our family friends, who now resides in Michigan, was his secretary when he was finishing the last volumes. If you have any questions, I may be able to get the answers for you, or, if it's OK with her, help you get in touch.
You should be very proud of your uncle.
Love,
Hourig

Still running off of free memberships and it makes it hard to get the certain reports and I have to find the free ones(haven't tried the census yet, just the social security death index). Thanks for the pointer, I'm VERY new to this and I barely find time to work on it.

There are several things I am looking for with concerns to my ancestry. I hope to find the dates for my great-grandparents arrival, and any of their ancestry if it can be found. It was rumored that my g-gfather came through Ellis Island at 18, but I couldn't find him in any of the records (thought I did it right and searched through his 30th b-day, did the same for g-gmother).

The location I listed was not definite because I hadn't sourced it yet but I included it because there are some very similarly named lines in California.

I am hoping to find a relative that might be able to shed some light on my questions. Last I heard my great-uncle Jack (whom I have never met) is still living, but his contact info and whereabouts have been lost due to two deaths in the family.

Any information or advice is appreciated, and any tips on how to do research without spending money would be great.

I'm searching for any traces of my great great grandfather Ardashes or Arteches Hovsepian. He was born around 1877 and hailed from Trebizond, Armenia. He escaped the genocide with his mother and brothers and fled to Washington D.C. His mother started a restaurant there. I have information from the middle of his life and on, but there are still some missing bits I'd like to clear up. Towards the end of his life, Arteches wrote several articles for an Armenian newspaper in NYC and five volumes entitled "Zartonk", which means "Awakening", concerning his activities during the Soviet takover of Armenia. He wrote under the pseudomyn Malkhas. Arteches died in 1962 in Beruit, Lebanon. ANY information about his publications or his wife, Sonya Samuelian. Thanks!

In 2003, Tracey said, "my great grandfather was bogos domdebedian, changed his name to thompson. possibly came into the us illegally form canada. any info?"

Hi, Tracey, have you had any more luck finding your great-grandpa? If you have any more info, it would help people help you. For instance, what century, and where, was your great-grandpa born? Can you tell us what year your grandpa was born, and where, and what HIS name was? That would help people locate your great-grandpa. A wife's name or his parents' names would be helpful too.

Also, how certain are you about the spelling of his original name? Perhaps you can ask your oldest relatives how he spelled it. I can think of another Armenian name that sort of sounds like that, but many Armenian names are very close in sound and spelling, so it's best to double-check.

Finally, be sure to put info in the caption that helps people figure out what you need; more than just the last name. Good luck!

Sarah....I just got off the phone with my father, Paul Dilloian (would be your grandmother's generation). I read the names of your great grandmother and grandmother off to him on the phone and he said you are definately the same Kulhanjian's! (and we are both very excited!!!!) Let's see if I can explain it.

Ok....Yaren had a brother John (Onig? in armenian) and another sister (dad can't remember her name but she married an Egasarian). Yaren you said married Leon Ellian. They had three children.....Hyke (dad said he is an attorney), Barbara (who is the oldest child), and another daughter (my dad can't remember her name.

Yaren's brother John, and my grandfather Mergurditch Dilloian were boyhood friends in the old country. After they came to the U.S. they remained very close. My dad is not sure if there is an actual blood relation there, but he thinks my great-grandmother Satenig was somehow related (cousin or sister) to your great-great-grandfather Nahabeth(not sure of spelling) Kulhanjian.

Your mothers cousins would be Ara and Manoog(deceased) Kulhanjian and Melanie Markarian.

You are one generation younger than I am in this tree from the looks of it.

Please E-mail me at Becksmom1@aol.com. I am very anxious to see how we can fill in gaps for each other in this tree.

Thanks so much!
Kathy

Sarah, Thanks so much for your reply. After you wrote and said Miami....I thought this can't be. The Koulhanjian's I know were from Miami and Hialeah (spelling?), Florida. My grandfather lived in Mass. when he first came to America, then Brooklyn, New York until my dad was in grade school, and then Asbury Park, NJ until he passed away in the 90s. I know my grandfather and grandmother frequently gathered at the Asbury Park Hye Hotel in their younger years. There was a very strong Armenian influence in Asbury back then.

I will check with my Dad to get more names of the Koulhanjian family members he knows. I only met them once when I was very young. My grandfather came here in the early 1920's and Married my grandmother Mary O'Hanian...unsure of the year. They are both gone now.

Thanks for any info you can find out!!!
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

So nice to see your post. I'll have to check with my grandmother to see if she is familiar with any of your family. My great-grandmother, Yeran, maiden name was KOULHANJIAN. She married Leon ELLIAN when she came to this country. When my grandmother Barbara Ellian Tellalian move to Miami, my great-grandmother as well as my grandmother's sister and brother came with them. It would be exciting to see if perhaps she knows or is related to your family. I will repost when I have more information.

Thanks!
Sarah Wardlaw Jones

Glad I found this site. I found my grandmother, great aunt, great uncle and great grandmothers ellis island manifest page as well. What a thrill it was to find....however, I have been unable to find my grandfather and his mother's manifest records there. I have an audio tape of my grandfather's account of the genocide...which is invaluable, but his memory of places and names was failing and I have very little information to search on. I noticed in this original post the name of KOULHANJIAN....and I know we have ties to a Koulhanjian family....Monoug and John. But I don't know if they are actually related or were just very close friends of my grandfather's. Much of the family lived in Florida from what I recall. My Family name is DILLOIAN, Grandfather was Murgerditchian....great grandmother was Satenig and I know they came to the US together. Any help?

Re: Looking for Armenian Grandfather
My grandfather was Hagop (sp. Akop) Atikian. After the genocide in the Ottoman Empire, he and his sister, Zaghig, were the only known survivors. He never knew if any other siblings lived to immigrate to the US. My grandfather was from Kessab, Syria, but spent some time in Aleppo and Beirut as a teacher. He married Efronia Churukian before immigrating, and they adopted her nephew as an infant.
If you had a grandfather named Atikian who immigrated any time after 1885, he is probably a relative. It is not a popular last name.
In the US, my grandfather, Hagop, lived in Paris, Illinois, Boonton, NJ, and Hollywood, CA, where he died in 1977 or 1978.
Armenians are hard to track genealogically because of the genocide. Family trees and other administrative records were often kept in the libraries of churches, as monks were literate and doubled as scribes. Those churches are mostly destroyed and the writings burned. In addition, so many people dies that in some cases, entire families were wiped off the face of the earth. It will be very hard to track any relatives without a DNA test.
I wish you good luck.

Hey Jerry,

I'm so glad you found our message board. I hope that it may soon become a useful tool for those of use trying to trace our roots.

The Ellis Island site has great value, but IS really frustrating. I was lucky enough to have a great-aunt who published a book on the Armenian Ellis Island exhibit and had included the name of the ship some of my family members came over on. That helped out a lot.

Please keep checking this site, hopefully more people will find us and use this forum.

I just discovered this message board, and saw your post. Couldn't agree more about the Ellis Island site you referred to. Having been a frequent visitor to the site, I've learned you must use the alternate-spelling feature to produce any meaningful results.

My grandmom is known to have entered the U.S. through Ellis Island, in 1910, and I've used every spelling I can think of (except the one they used!). I'm patient.

Jerry Mikaelian

Hi Joan!
I found at passenger mainfest for Sarkis Adajian on www.ellisisland.org. The date of arrival is March 14, 1913. He was 20 years old on date of arrival and traveled on the ship "Chicago". It listed his hometown as Kheder, Turkey and his ethnicity as Armenian. It's possible that the last name was spelled incorrectly on the manifest, that's what happened to me when I tried looking for my family.
I hope that helps!
Joan,

After I post my first reply I found another listing for a Sark Atikian on the Ellis Island site. It was interesting because on the passenger manifest for this individual, it indicates his was going to his brother's Hagop Atigian in Youngstown, Ohio. That date was Dec. 8, 1913. This might not be who you are looking for but maybe the Hagop Atigian angle might be a place to look.
Good luck!
Sarah Wardlaw Jones

Looking for Armenian Grandfather

I'm trying to find out when my Grandfather Peter *Bedros) Atigian came to this country and any other info about him. All I know is that is was before 1918 and that his fathers name was Sarkis and his mothers name was Mary. Would any one know where I could find this out? I don't know if he came through Ellis Island. I have tried to find him in the records there with no luck. Would anyone know where in Armenia I could try to find records? Thanks

Ellis Island Immigation Records

First of all I'd like to thank the people at Ancestry.com for creating this important message board for us to discuss our Armenian ancestors. My great-grandparents came to America between 1915-1921. Their legacy, and the legacy of all immigrants have helped weave the very fabric of our country.

A note about Immigration Records at www.ellisislandrecords.org
I discovered as I was searching for immigration records for my great-grandmother HiaganoushYEMENEDJIAN, how important it is to use the alternate spelling search. Many of the ship manifests have names spelled incorrectly, as was pretty common during that time.
Her name was spelled incorrectly as was that of her future mother in-law Gohar TELLALIAN (spelled on the ship manifests as DELLALIAN).
If any one would like to share their search experiences here, I welcome the discussion!
Sincerly,
Sarah Wardlaw Jones
