First of all I'd like to thank the people at Ancestry.com for creating this important message board for us to discuss our Armenian ancestors. My great-grandparents came to America between 1915-1921. Their legacy, and the legacy of all immigrants have helped weave the very fabric of our country.

A note about Immigration Records at www.ellisislandrecords.org
I discovered as I was searching for immigration records for my great-grandmother HiaganoushYEMENEDJIAN, how important it is to use the alternate spelling search. Many of the ship manifests have names spelled incorrectly, as was pretty common during that time.
Her name was spelled incorrectly as was that of her future mother in-law Gohar TELLALIAN (spelled on the ship manifests as DELLALIAN).
If any one would like to share their search experiences here, I welcome the discussion!
Sincerly,
Sarah Wardlaw Jones

I just discovered this message board, and saw your post. Couldn't agree more about the Ellis Island site you referred to. Having been a frequent visitor to the site, I've learned you must use the alternate-spelling feature to produce any meaningful results.

My grandmom is known to have entered the U.S. through Ellis Island, in 1910, and I've used every spelling I can think of (except the one they used!). I'm patient.

Hey Jerry,

I'm so glad you found our message board. I hope that it may soon become a useful tool for those of use trying to trace our roots.

The Ellis Island site has great value, but IS really frustrating. I was lucky enough to have a great-aunt who published a book on the Armenian Ellis Island exhibit and had included the name of the ship some of my family members came over on. That helped out a lot.

Please keep checking this site, hopefully more people will find us and use this forum.

Glad I found this site. I found my grandmother, great aunt, great uncle and great grandmothers ellis island manifest page as well. What a thrill it was to find....however, I have been unable to find my grandfather and his mother's manifest records there. I have an audio tape of my grandfather's account of the genocide...which is invaluable, but his memory of places and names was failing and I have very little information to search on. I noticed in this original post the name of KOULHANJIAN....and I know we have ties to a Koulhanjian family....Monoug and John. But I don't know if they are actually related or were just very close friends of my grandfather's. Much of the family lived in Florida from what I recall. My Family name is DILLOIAN, Grandfather was Murgerditchian....great grandmother was Satenig and I know they came to the US together. Any help?

Hi Kathy,

So nice to see your post. I'll have to check with my grandmother to see if she is familiar with any of your family. My great-grandmother, Yeran, maiden name was KOULHANJIAN. She married Leon ELLIAN when she came to this country. When my grandmother Barbara Ellian Tellalian move to Miami, my great-grandmother as well as my grandmother's sister and brother came with them. It would be exciting to see if perhaps she knows or is related to your family. I will repost when I have more information.

Thanks!

Sarah, Thanks so much for your reply. After you wrote and said Miami....I thought this can't be. The Koulhanjian's I know were from Miami and Hialeah (spelling?), Florida. My grandfather lived in Mass. when he first came to America, then Brooklyn, New York until my dad was in grade school, and then Asbury Park, NJ until he passed away in the 90s. I know my grandfather and grandmother frequently gathered at the Asbury Park Hye Hotel in their younger years. There was a very strong Armenian influence in Asbury back then.

I will check with my Dad to get more names of the Koulhanjian family members he knows. I only met them once when I was very young. My grandfather came here in the early 1920's and Married my grandmother Mary O'Hanian...unsure of the year. They are both gone now.

Thanks for any info you can find out!!!
Kathy

Sarah....I just got off the phone with my father, Paul Dilloian (would be your grandmother's generation). I read the names of your great grandmother and grandmother off to him on the phone and he said you are definately the same Kulhanjian's! (and we are both very excited!!!!) Let's see if I can explain it.

Ok....Yaren had a brother John (Onig? in armenian) and another sister (dad can't remember her name but she married an Egasarian). Yaren you said married Leon Ellian. They had three children.....Hyke (dad said he is an attorney), Barbara (who is the oldest child), and another daughter (my dad can't remember her name.

Yaren's brother John, and my grandfather Mergurditch Dilloian were boyhood friends in the old country. After they came to the U.S. they remained very close. My dad is not sure if there is an actual blood relation there, but he thinks my great-grandmother Satenig was somehow related (cousin or sister) to your great-great-grandfather Nahabeth(not sure of spelling) Kulhanjian.

Your mothers cousins would be Ara and Manoog(deceased) Kulhanjian and Melanie Markarian.

You are one generation younger than I am in this tree from the looks of it.

Please E-mail me at Becksmom1@aol.com. I am very anxious to see how we can fill in gaps for each other in this tree.

Thanks so much!
Kathy

Hi Kathy!

It's been many years since our e-mail correspondence, but I thought you might be interested that I was able to locate the passenger manifest for Naharbet Kulhandjian (we don't stand much of a chance the way these names are so easily misspelled), his wife Aghavni and my great-grandmother, Yeranooi (Yeran) when they came over on the SS Byron in 1923. The passenger manifest indicates that they were from a town called Erzincan, Turkey, which might be helpful for your family search. It also indicated they were going to stay with their son-in-law, Ghevant B. Egazarian.

A little more sleuthing uncovered his wife's name was Araxy (Araxie). And a little MORE sleuthing found that Araxie Kulhandjian and Onnig (her brother, John) came over in January of 1921 on the ship Meghali Hellas. According to that manifest, it looks as if they had an uncle, Karekin Kulhandjian living in Detroit, Michigan.

Hope you are your family are well and that perhaps there might be additional clues in my searching that can assist you!

All the best,
Sarah Wardlaw Jones
