Walkers in America

I am trying to find my ancestor who may have travelled or emigrated for a while to America in the 1860's round about. His name was James Walker and he was born in 1830's perhaps. I know that he married a Rachel ? in his home country but would like to know if and when he may have travelled to America. If anyone can help me I will be eternally grateful. He came from Monmouthshire in Wales originally and as far as I know he died in Wales about 1915 but not absolutely certain. Thanks for help in advance. Crissy

So, the story goes...
Edwin D. James (born about 1850+/-1) was an orphan who lived with his grandparents until the age of 8 and then travelled overseas to America; to live with an uncle who lived in NY. Then as an older man he moved on to KS, IL, MO, and then settling in NE. He married E.Alice Bradford and had 7 kids. The unknown story we can't figure out, YET, is where he was from in Wales and what happened to his parents, and what were his grandparents names. Did they travel with him to NY? And what was the relative's name in NY? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am researching my ancestor Griffith G Jones. I have something that says he came to NY from Carnarvanshire, North Wales in 1800. I found on Ancestry.com a Passenger and Immigration Index with his name, 1801 arrival with wife and family of 7 is all it says. I am guessing there is a book somewhere that I can find a few more details. Says it was "abstracted from a manuscript (Bangor MSS 16910) located in the Department of Manuscripts at University College, Bangor"
Anyone know where I can find this book? thank you!

Trying to find info on my Williams Family. They lived in Carbondale, PA. Born in Wales, immigrated to the U.S in 1883(?) William was married to Ann Rees. Not able to connect the dots because of the immigration factor. Was hoping someone might have info on the Williams. I believe their were 12 children total but I do not know the other names. The only info I have on children is their was a son William (born in Wales ?) a daughter Mary(born in Wales ?), and my grandmother Gwendoline who was born in Carbondale, PA in 1889. Gwendoline married my grandfather Oscar Wild Hunter. They had 9 children...Ellen, Beatrice, Marjorie, Evelyn, Kenneth, Treva, Hayden, Harley, & Marilyn. Any tidbit would be wonderful.

There is a James Sullivan age 7 listed on the 1881 census in Newport, MON as follows: James Sullivan, age 30, laborer, born Pontypool, wife: Ann age 31 born Bantry, Ireland, Son: Daniel age 12 born Cardiff, Mary A. age 8 born Cardiff and James age 7, born Cardiff. They were living South Ward. This is from Ancestry.com. A lot of Irish came into South Wales during the Potato Famine for work and it is possible that your Sullivan family was one of them. Good luck. Annie

Sorry, I did see that you had a date - 19th century. My people left that area of North Carolina in 1827 for Illinois. They were Quakers and didn't approve of slavery. I can't help you with anything that late.

However, the surname is not Welsh. I doubt very much he ever came from Wales. I would look to England for that name, although is Huguenot, you say. Lots of Huguenots came into England and Ireland, for that matter. You may be Welsh but it would be under another name.

What time period are we talking about?

Re your band of Welsh being Huguenots - If they were Huguenots, they would have said so. If they were Welsh, it would have said "Welsh." I've never heard that name you are researching as being in born in Wales. Welsh did emigrate to Dublin County in about 1782. Where they came from in Wales, I have no idea. Not even sure they didn't come from somewhere else in the USA first.

Can't really help you unless you give me a date.

Welsh Emigrants to North Carolina

I'm trying to find information about a "band of Welsh" that settled in Guilford County, North Carolina. This may be the answer to my brick wall.

In "The History of Guilford County" by Sallie Walker Stockard (1902), page 13,is this paragraph --

"In central Guilford the Scotch-Irish settled: in east Guilford the Germans built their homes; while in west Guilford the English Quakers took up their abode. A band of Welsh also came to this section."

Jediah/Jedediah Aydelott owned land in Guilford County in 1788. (I believe this to be Jediah Sr.) The 1880 Census for his grandson, Joseph, says that his father (Jediah Jr., b.abt 1774) was born in Wales. No one has been able to prove the Wales connection.

Aydelott (variant spellings include Aydelotte, Aydlott, Idlott, Idlett, Hydlott) is a Huguenot surname. This "band of Welsh" may have been a group of Huguenots who emigrated together.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Alice

Nancy is his second wife. This may be her grandson. Jesse only had two daughters that we know of. We are familiar with the grandchildren. Our great-grandfather was one of them. He filled us in on a lot of this. He told us about his grandfather coming from Wales. He told us he was shipwrecked. We have no verification.

This is my Jesse. We also found him in the 1850 census, before any children were born. We can not find him before then. Our great-grandfather told us he was from Wales. It is on his obituary (The gazette) in the Hyde County website. We are confused about his origin. One census states that his wife could not read or write, explaining possibly why his daughter recorded him in her husband's family bible.

His children were born in Hyde county. His parents are listed on familysearch.org and their date of marriage but no more info. His obituary says he was from Wales. Thanks for the input though, maybe I can find others in the area that came from Wales. I am new at this.

Was his daughter born in Wales? Was she on the 1900 US Census? If she was born there and is on that census, it might say when she emigrated.

If there are Welsh in that area of North Carolina, where did they come from? Might be the same place as your ancestor.

My gr-grandparents traveled on the ship AJAX, a packet ship from Liverpool to New York, arriving during the period after Castle Garden was closed and before Ellis Island opened. A barge in the river was used to process new immigrants during this time. They docked on July 25, 1833.

Does anyone know if there are records from this time period? I'm especially interested in the ship's record of passengers.
Any suggestion or clue would be appreciated.

Evan Thomas & Sarah Powell from Wales to Pennsylvania

Yes, it's taken me almost two years to find this list!

My Welsh ancestors with surnames of PARSELL and POWELL emigrated to Pennsylvania, USA about 1869 from Pembrokeshire, SW Wales, specifically from a little town called Saundersfoot. They had married in Wales and arrived with several young children. They settled in Northumberland Co., PA. They were coalminers. They wrote and read in English. Pembrokeshire is known as "Little England".

My other Welsh ancestor with surname of THOMAS arrived in PA in 1881 as a yoing man from Anglesey. His family were mostly farmers. He settled in Northumberland Co., PA and worked as a coalminer. He read Welsh.

So my grandparents were Evan THOMAS and Sarah POWELL. Evan died in Mt. Carmel, PA in 1920 and Sarah died in Montour Co, PA in 1930.

See my webpages about these families:
www.angelfire.com/sc/elida/welsh3.html/
www.angelfire.com/sc/elida/welsh6.html/
www.angelfire.com/sc/elida/postcards.html/
I am interested in learning what area of Wales provided the majority of immigrants to Portage County Ohio in the mid 19th century. I zm trying to discover where in Wales someone is most likely to have emigrated from.

I am trying to trace Thomas Williams who was born in Wales in 1824 and is found in the US Census in 1850 living in Portage County Ohio. His occupation is listed at times as a house painter and also as the County Sheriff. He married Mary Merwin and had a large family in Ohio.
