Hello!

I'm at a brick wall with my ancestor, Richard Hill, who was born ~1810 in Yorkshire area, and immigrated ~1840 (according to 1900 census) ....but I have no idea where he immigrated to and the exact date. Is there any way of locating this information? I know he ended up in Indiana in 1843 as he was married on January of 1843 in Parke County, Indiana.

Thank you!
Stephanie

Have you tried the Castle Garden site? www.castlegarden.org.

He may also have entered through Canada

1840 is a bit early for the online records, but there is always the shipslist to try as well http://www.theshipslist.com/

His naturalisation record may contain useful information.

His obituary may contain very useful detail. Check all local newspapers as coverage and completeness may vary. Very local newspapers are more likely to have carried a detailed obituary than a county or regional newspaper. Most such newspapers will not be available online and will only exist as hard copy originals in local/county/state libraries, archives and historical societies. Remember however the information provided to the newspaper/s will reflect what his relatives knew and might not be completely accurate for the earlier period of his life.

The further back in the nineteenth century someone emigrated, the wider the range of ports they may have entered the USA through, and the more challenging the search becomes. A very good guide to research is J.P.Colletta "They came in ships: a guide to finding you immigrant ancestor's arrival record". This book has gone through many editions since it was first printed in 1989, so try and find one of the more recent editions.

Good luck with your research!
