Emigration - where to start

Emigration - where to start

Hi all, I have been building a tree for around a year now. I have a lot of the basic facts such as BMD's and census info. I have recently thought about whether anyone in the family emmigrated at some point. Is there a general strategy for looking for emmigrants or is it simply a fact of trolling through the various catalogues on ancestry tying up names and dates.
Many thanks for any advice. Gary Moseley

Thats a kind offer. Unfortunately i have no idea if any of the family emigrated other than one great aunt that i have details for from living relatives. I wouldnt want to waste your time on a wild goose chase. I was just looking to fill out my tree with further details now i have pretty much tied up most of the base info of BMD, census etc.

many thanks

Gary

I am need of some advice regarding emigration and researching family out of the U.S. I have hit a brick wall with my great grand parents and I really help.

My great grandfather, James Edmund Smith was born in 1/23/1882 in England & my great grandmother Daisy Elizabeth (Maiden name unknown)was born 5/7/1884 in Australia. They both died in Los Angeles, California. The oldest record I have is the 1920 census which states that they where living in Texas at that time. That census also states that the year of immigration for both of them was in 1904. Their first child was born in Washington in 1906.

I don't know if they where married when they came here. I am not sure where to assume they where coming from England or Australia. And I am just assuming that their port was in Washington.

Also, I have tried to find their birth records, but I don't know the names of their parents so this is difficult.

Any advice would be so greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Traci Smith

If you have the correct birthdate and you think he was born in England then you should be able to find James' birth on FreeBMD (free but not complete) or one of the pay-per-view sites such as FindmyPast.co.uk etc (not Ancestry as they use the FreeBMD records)

You will need to get the reference number for the birth and then go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ to order it online (cost 9.25bp)

However, I have checked FREEBMD and there is (so far) no James Edmund b 1882 (it's best to use the day - named month - year convention in fam hist as it can be confusing otherwise to non-americans who would see 1/23/1882 as the 1st of the 23rd month!! Doesn't matter for James but it does for Daisy - was she born in May or July?)

Surely if you know the first child was born in Washington you could get a US cert which would give the mother's maiden name?

ANcestry have the emigration records from England to the US. There are also the Ellis Island and Castle Garden sites for entry into the US

Good hunting

think your 1st port of call would be to obtain a copy of their death certs from CA - he 1954 she 1951 - these should hold info to work from - although neither show a SS number, there could well be so, have a hunt for those too as these would normally show parents etc

although there dos'nt appear to be a birth reg in 1882 many births only showed the 1st name so.... and, regretfully, with a name like Smith, would need more info

I have never heard of the Castle Garden site. I am a memeber of the Ellis Island registry. Could you give me more info on Castle Garden? I tried to google it for immigration but I came up with a bed and breakfast in Fl and a flower/plant site in I believe Mi. My grandfather was 15 or there about when he came to the states with persons unknown. I have not found anything using his name so I am thinking he came over on a family ticket like my grandmother did. Not knowing what happened to his parents, and the story was, he came over with this couple who ended up going to Australia and leaving him in the states ( Fall River, Ma )when they left. I also was told he made trips back to the UK but can't find any info on those trips either. It took me about 10 years to find any info on him to begin with.
Due to people not reading or wrting they couldn't varify how others spelled the name and the spelling was way off and also he had a younger brother who had born and died two years before him who had the same name but was spelled correctly. With work houses and poor houses and being Catholic all has made the going rough. I do want more info on James( Burscough )Boscow DOB 16 Feb, 1875 in Preston, England and his parents William Boscow and Mary Elizabeth Miller. Williams father was James and mother's name was Maria Marsh. Mary Elizabeth's father was Thomas Miller. I don't have anything else on them though.

Surnames: Rowley Smith
Thank you all for taking the time to help me with my research. I have since found the my Great Grandfather James Edmund Smith was actually James Edmund Rowley and my Grandmother was Daisy Elizabeth Smith. I know that was the names on thier marriage certificate from Australia. I have found ship manifest that show them as "Rowleys" from England to Canada. But at some point, they changed their last name to my grandmother's maiden name. I believe it happened before they made it to the United States. Does anyone have any idea on how I can research why they would have changed their last name? It was a shock to my family as we didn't know the we are "Rowley's" and not "Smith's". Anyways, any have any tips or advice. Thank you. Traci Smith LaCrosse
