Hi Chris
I found that newspapers by chance, while searching for emmigration information of one of my wifes far cousins. She left germany in 1890,to live in USA. I remebered the lot of information in this newspapers, about arriving an departuring ships from europe harbours, and when I saw your post,I took a second look in it. Today I found another ship named Union, may be a sailing ship, because this ship is mentioned just as a ship, not as a "D"-Ship (Dampfschiff)and because this ship is mentioned under Schiffs-Nachrichten,Headline "Gesegelte und angekommene Schiffe", sailed and arrived ships. You will find this info in the newspaper from June 14., 1866, 20.Jahrgang.Number 24,Page 97, bottom left.

June 11.(?) Union (Captain Schuette),from Bremerhaven nach New York. (not from Liverpool).
More than one "Union" during that time?
Again I try to attach the page
Let me know, if you had success
Klaus

Klaus,

I need to do some more looking on that link, but these are my first reactions. How'd you ever find that 10 May sailing of the Union? Well done! But since it's a steamer, it should have reached New York by maybe 24 May (and I can't find any record of that). Maybe it went back to L'pool, and on 20 June, it was on another trip to NY. A Union, from the NDL line, did arrive in NY on 29 Sept, on maybe still another trip. And who's ship was it? Norddeutcher Lloyd, or someone else? But that'll keep me busy for a week or two, will let you know.

And many thanks...bis spaeter, Chris

Cris
I found this information in the Allgemeine Auswanderer Zeitung,20.Jahrgang (1866),Inhaltsverzeichnis Mai,Inhaltsverzeichnis Nr.22,Seite 86.
Sorry, but it seams to be a steamboat (Postdampfschiff)
I made a mistake by writing DD. Union. DD stands for the two ships, the D(Dampfschiff)Union and the D(Dampfschiff) La Plata. leaving Liverpool on May 15.,1866

I made a copy an try to attach it.
There is no manifest in that newspaper.
Good Luck
Klaus

http://zs.thulb.uni-jena.de/receive/jportal_jpjournal_000000...

Klaus,
Brilliant! That may be the right ship, especially if it is a sailing vessel (not steamship). Where did you find this listing?
Voyage of the Oscar II and Grosser Kurfuerst 1903

My great-grandparents (Ane and Peter J. Rodholm) immigrated to the U.S. from Denmark with their youngest child on the Oscar II which broke down ending up in Ponto Delgado, Azores and completed the voyage to Ellis Island on the Grosser Kurfuerst arriving 21 March 1903. The child, my great Aunt Anna Rodholm Clapp talked about the trials of this voyage including the throwing off of extra weight, e.g., a piano. For her it was a miserable but memorable voyage.

Emigrant Ship "Union", 1866

FamilySearch.org, as well as some UK sites, show my ancestor Adolf Witze died on-board the "Union" on 20 June 1866. Adolf's plan was to travel Hamburg>Hull>Liverpool>New York...he left Hamburg on 1 May, 1866 (Hamburg Passenger List) on the Lincoln (to get to Hull, then train to L'pool). I presume the Union was L'Pool>NY, but can find no such record of any ship of that name making that trip in that time frame (there was one in late Sept, but that's not it). In fact, I can't find any Union (on "theshipslist", for ex) making even a Europe>North America trip in that time frame (in case his plans changed). I even searched on "union" just being part of the name somewhere...no luck. Any ideas what to try next? I am trying to determine the Union's departure and arrival's ports and dates. Thnx

Note: Adolf was traveling with his brother Jurgen. Jurgen is also on the 1 May Hamburg passenger list, but I have never found a record of where and when he entered the USA...but he did make it to Troy,NY, by October.

Hi, from your message I gather you would like to know who the other two commentors are! snowey561 is myself, and Lynette198 is a private member tree so I cannot give out her info.
Yes there seems to be a large gap in ages of Fredeirick and Marie, and can possible be explained by the fact that quite a few ages were guessed by the ships Booking office, but it also was not uncommon for the woman to take a younger man.
A lot of the Info can be gained from the previous posts and I can forward you a copy of any Information I have sent the other two, where shall I send it?
Were Wilhelm and Wilhelmina living at Ambleside,SA in 1933?Did Wilhelm pass away in Adelaide on 28 Dec 1933?
Do you need any further help with this line of your family?

I have just come across this thread. My gradfather was Albert Feder son of Wilhelm and Wilhelmine. I know you Len but who are the other two. Can I have the info on the booklet as well please Graham. My Mm said that Wilheme and family did go to Two Wells or Pt Gawler area. Then she knows that he went to Barton Tce Nth Adelaide. Fredriech his father when they came out here with a Marie, she seems to me that there was a large age gap between Fredeirich and Marie so I wondered if they were married, but related as it seems as though she didn't go back to Germany, but I don't know what happened to her

Unusual Abbreviation for Italian Immigrants

I've run across an unusual marking in the height columns on a particular ship manifest. I've attached two pages of the manifest of the Hamburg which arrived in NY on 24 May 1911. The height column seems to have a script 'p' in place of either the feet or inches numbers. On one of the pages nearly the entire column of heights is marked this way while on the other only a few heights have the marking. It doesn't seem to be used as a normal ditto mark. I believe the ship is German and the passengers mostly Italian (including my wife's great grandfather). Any idea what the abbreviation/marking stands for?

Dan B in MD

Dear Joel,

Thank you for your response. The microfilm for this ship manifest was created in 1944 -- which explains why neither of us can see any cerificate of arrival markings on it after the early 1940s. I don't know whether this means that in producing later certificates of arrival, they just looked at the microfilm for verification, or if they still marked up the original manifest.

Thank you for the excellent suggestion that I contact Marian Smith. I will do so.

Regards,
Steve

Dear LostQuays,

Thank you for your response. The only other naturalization record I have for my great grandmother is a copy of her petition for naturalization, which I received from NARA, together with the certificate of arrival. The arrival info on the petition matches perfectly with the arrival info on the certificate -- with the added detail on the petition that she embarked on the ship in Hamburg.

I have taken one further step. I just ordered from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services a copy of my great grandmother's consolidated "C-File," which should include additional naturalization documents, like a declaration of intention to naturalize (if she filed one).

Regards,
Steve

I've also been following this thread.

Note the request went out from the court in 1951. The certificate of arrival number is written on the manifest.... next to the immigrants name..... at least on this manifest through the early 1940s.

So maybe there was a different procedure after that.... or that the manifests were filmed in the 1940s and any subsequent notations on those sheets obviously aren't going to be seen on these pages. I looked through the manifest looking for the certificate number (not any names) and saw the apparent cutoff for the sheet notations.

You might want to send an email to Marian Smith, the Historian at the US Immigration and Naturalization Service who is an expert on these types of records, and if you do and she replies, repeat the information here.

Have been following this thread with great interest..

Steven, I don't think you are misunderstanding anything. Just mislead.

I have said it so many times that Naturalization documents can lead you on a wild goose chase.

But as soon as I see a certificate of arrival I tend to believe what is actually written on there... most of the time.

A researcher once told me that "they" use a book which has a list of arrivals (dates) and a list of ships which they use to get their information to fill out the certificate without actually looking for the passenger list. But not in all cases..

I've seen it myself with other passengers though.. a Certificate of Arrival which had the wrong information.. and always had wondered how could this be?? The Certificate of Arrival looks and sounds like a very accurate document.. but it's not..

My question to you now.. does the Certificate of Arrival information match the information that is on the Naturalization documents? Is there anything different at all?
Hi Kim, Thanks for your reply. You're definitely related to our Carson family. Your ggg gp could have been born in Ireland, on the boat, or in America. All the parental generation were born in Antrim County, Ireland. The births of their children confirm 1818 as their travel-to-America date. Lots of brothers and a sister: Andrew/Margaret, David, James, Jane, John/Ann (your 4g gps), Matthew/Jane, Robert, Smith/Elizabeth living mostly in North Carolina, James in Virginia. Three of them later moved to Missouri (David, John, Smith). David came to Oregon as did at least one of his nephews (Andrew Jackson Carson). I have more information about American marriages, children, deaths if you're interested. Jan

Dear Thomas,

You have again done a good job locating records of my family. Urian (born Urach) Feigin was my great grandfather Morris's younger brother. I've essentially located all the relevant census records for my family (which wasn't so easy to do given lots of surname misspellings.) Urian's wife Lilian was Nathan Levitas's sister. It's possible that Froma Liba Levitt is a relative of theirs (Levitt is close to Levitas), but I know she's not another sibling.

I was aware of the Liebe Levit arrival record from June 22. Definitely not my great grandmother. This Liebe Levit is from the wrong place (Kiev, not Minsk), but more importantly, the Immigration and Naturalization Service made a notation on the manifest which associates this Liebe Levit with another person's naturalization petition and certificate of arrival -- not that of my great grandmother.

Again -- what I'm really seeking to understand is how the Immigration and Naturalization Service appears to have produced a certificate of arrival for my great grandmother that is completely mistaken. Unless I'm misunderstanding something.

Steve

Hi Steve,

ok let´s forget about Libau.
In 1920 census there is no entry abt the year or duration of marriage, unfortunately.
In 1930, there is age at first marriage 27 for Morris and 23 for Fanny. So it is not quite clear if the marriage took place in 1909 or 1910 ( if one considers data as correct).

The only Liebe ( but forename here ) Levit I found arrived on June 22, 1909 aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm II and was too young ( 18). No Frome, Frame with matching surname at all.

In 1930 there is a Urian?? Tergin? ( also born in Minsk) listed directly below the Morris Fergan family with a br i l Nathan Levit(s). Maybe this a hint. But I just noticed that Nathan and his sister Lillian were born in NY. So it should be nothing but coincidence.

Kind regards,

Thomas

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your response. You did correctly identify the arrival record of my great-grandfather, Morris "Mordche" Feigin. (It remains unclear to me why on the manifest he declared himself "single" and made no mention he was joining a wife in the U.S.)

"Fruma Libe" -- which is how it's usually spelled -- was a woman's name among eastern European Jews, if a quite uncommon one. If you google the name, you'll find a number of examples.

I've successfully identified the arrival records of all my relatives, except this great-grandmother. I'm attaching her certificate of arrival from her naturalization petition, for use by you and other researchers. My presumption is that she provided her arrival name -- "Froma Liba Levitt" -- to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, which was supposed to produce the certificate after checking the ship's manifest (or a microfilm copy of it) and confirming that someone with that name arrived on the given ship on the given day.

By the way, I also can't find "Froma Liba Levitt" -- or any name resembling it -- on the ship's departure manifest from Hamburg, where my great-grandmother supposedly boarded the ship.

So once again, can someone explain what's going on here?

Steve
Hi

I think there are some errors. The words on the declaration are somewhat too extraordinary to be a name. I presume frome liba levitt has sth to do with departure in Libau, Latvia. But this is just a guess. Maybe the 1952 record has nothing to do with your Fanny ( see following paragraph).

Do you know the ship´s name your great grandfather arrived on? I have a Mordche Feigin, 26, carpenter from Minsk, aboard the Lapland ( arrival June 1910), but he stated to be single. Destination: brother C Feigin in New Britain, Conn. Arrival data are equal to those stated in the naturalization record from 1928.

Kind regards,

Thomas
Elizabeth Willcox is recorded on UK Outward passengers but not listed on the Australia Unassisted immigrant list.

Some passengers have the DRLeP next to their names and some have been crossed off.
Can you let us know the ship manifest (name of person) where you are seeing DRLeP

Names crossed generally indicates they either did not board the ship OR the name was duplicated elsewhere on the manifest

Who is the person listed in departures but not on destination? If she is listed among departures then way don't you know from whence she departed? This part of your message is very confusing.

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

has certificate of arrival -- but not on manifest

I just obtained a copy of my great grandmother's naturalization petition from the National Archives. The record includes her certificate of arrival, with the following details:

No. A3 633 704
Name: Froma Liba Levitt
Port of Entry: New York, NY
Date: June 24, 1909
Manner of Entry: S.S. President Grant
Issued: May 15, 1951

Additionally, the naturalization petition reports her birth date as February 15, 1885 and birthplace as Minsk, Russia. Her married name was Fannie (sometimes spelled Fanny) Fagin (sometimes Feigin). According to the petition, she married my great grandfather in Minsk a month before she came to the U.S. -- though he arrived separately after her, in 1910.

Unfortunately, I am unable to locate anyone with a name even close to "Froma Liba Levitt" on the manifest of the ship she supposedly arrived on. I went through the manifest screen by screen on Ancestry.com. I also used Jewishgen's "Accessing Ellis Island Manifests in One Step" tool to go through the original microfilm located on the Ellis Island website. There don't appear to be any pages missing -- they are sequentially numbered from 1 to 42.

Additionally, using search functions on the Ancestry website and on the Jewishgen website (which searches the Ellis Island website), I have been unable to locate anyone with a name like "Froma Liba Levitt" arriving on any ship at any time.

Can anyone explain what could be going on here?

Several items are not clear to me on the manifest, so I'm hoping to get help reading it.

Franciszek Porembski, Anastazia, ?Aniela?, Jan and Anna

Unclear on the following:

* Does that say Aniela? (They do call her Ann in another record)

*Anna's age. 11/12..does this mean she's 11 months? 10 days later I have the family in Bessemer, MI, on a 1910 census and Anna is listed as age 3.

*Jan's age is 9 on the manifest, but 12 on the census 10 days later. Why?

*Last Perm. res. Austria (which is really Poland in this case) City or town. ? First town is crossed out, which actually I believe is Piwniczna. But town written above/in place of I can't read.

*Is that $200 or 900?

*Been in the States before, if so, when? Does that say 1904/9? Does that mean Frank was here in 1904 UNTIL 1909, or AGAIN in 1909?

*Joining relative or friend, if so who/where? It looks like brother in law in Bessemer, MI..but the name is unclear. However, it seems his sister married a Michael Relich, so is it possible that says Maska Relitz?

*Place of birth. There's that town again, and another cross out of what I believe is Piwniczna. But what's it replaced with?
