Duplicate passengers on White Star's Majestic and Germanic

Duplicate passengers on White Star's Majestic and Germanic

Any guesses as to why Simon Mathews (ticket 41200 on line 3) and several other passengers are listed as arriving on May 17, 1900 in New York from Queenstown AND Simon Mathews (ticket 41200 on line 13) on the Majestic arriving on May 24, 1900 from Queenstown? Multiple names are repeated on both ship records. At first I thought perhaps Simon Mathews had gotten sick and missed his ship but then I noticed that several people are repeated on both records.

Did the ship have a mechanical breakdown? Was it overbooked?

Did you notice the lines running though certain names on the first manifest? Those people were not on board the Germanic. The convention was for the ship's purser to strike through the names of those who had purchased tickets and were not present at sailing.

They did, however, make the Majestic using their already purchased tickets.

Thank you for that information! This will be helpful for this relative and others who came from Europe.
