1) Croatians typically did not and do not now have middle names The reason your Dragutin used the middle name Matia (=Mathew) is that his father is listed on the manifest as Matiyas. It was a common practice for men from Croatia to adapt their father's given name as their middle name once in America.

2) Croatian Charles/Carl may be Karlo... but more commonly are Dragutin or Drago
