Smith Wife and Child

Looking for information on Anne Elizabeth Smith (36) and Robert Smith (infant) who are listed as passengers on a ship called, The Prussian, which arrived 12 June 1870 at Quebec City, Quebec from Liverpool. I was told that she and her youngest died of "consumption". I thought it was after they arrived, but it may have been en route. How would I go about finding out this information?

Your help with this matter is most appreciated.

The most important thing is which flag the ship was sailing under. If it was a British ship any death on board would have to be recorded in the Captain's log - probably with very little detail - because there are very strict rules about death and burial at sea. Most Captains' logs for British ships are now held at the International Maritime Centre at St. John's, Newfoundland. If the ship was sailing under another flag you will have to chase up the records for whatever country it was.

According to theshipslist there was only one ship named "Prussian", built 1869, scrapped in Genoa in 1898, so her dates would fit. She was owned by the Allan Line, otherwise the Montreal Ocean Steamship Company which was later taken over by Canadian Pacific. This company was registered in London so would have been sailing under the British flag. Suggest you get on to the International Maritime Centre and ask what records they have. If they do not have what you want they will probably be able to point you in the right direction. At one time, at least, the British National Archives had kept a "representative sample" of the logs so I assume a few are still there - but I am sure the centre will be able to give you information if anyone can.
