"Levan" crushed by boat in Port (1874)

Surnames: FINERTY / FENERTY / FINNERTY / FINAGHTY, LeVan, Lavant, Levin
Edward Finerty (Fenerty/Finnerty) arrived from Ireland somewhere along the Eastern shore in 1874 (1875?). He was traveling with his brother or friend "Levan" (LeVan, Levanne, Levin). Levan slipped off the boat in Port and was crushed between the rocks and the boat. Edward was about 20 at the time (born 1854) and Levan was about 3 years younger (born 1857). Does this unfortunate account sound familiar?

After dozens of hours researching immigration records and passenger lists, I think that I've just located Edward Finerty on the SS City of New York which arrived on 29 April 1873. I'm still investigating that. NARA has a wealth of passenger lists if one has the patience and time to pursue them. As for Immigration Record, I suspect that Edward just sorta became absorbed rather than abiding by the formal (legal) process. He lived in Pennsylvania and Maryland but I haven't found any immigration records for him yet.

Thanks so much, Karen, for your interest and input. I hope to print all 40+ pages of original passenger lists for the SS City of New York in hopes of identifying both Edward Finerty and his brother/friend "Levan". I spent 4-5 hours last night ('til 1:00 in the morning) on this and got a little burned out. LOL This ship had ~1,100 passengers and in some cases the handwritten is difficult to interpret. This stuff sure is a challenge, isn't it?

Yes, indeed. The Steve Morse site is excellent. The same information is also on familysearch.org. Karen, can you kindly investigate passenger #498 on that list. I think it's Edward Finerty but he's listed as a "she" and as a "spinster". Perhaps I'm not reading the document correctly or perhaps they misaligned columns when copying it. If I can locate a "Levan" or "Levin" in this same log, then I know that I've located my Great Grandfather. That'll be a huge discovery.

This is taking longer than I hoped....familysearch.org keeps crashing when I try to open the link. Be assured that I'll send this as soon, hopefully within the next half hour.
