Finnish Crew and Passenger Lists

Finnish Crew and Passenger Lists

Surnames: Soderholm
My Grandfather Otto Harold Soderholm b.1891 arrived in Newcastle Australia on 1 June 1914 from Finland. His Naturalisation papers state the ship he arrived on was called the 'GEZINA' and left from Uruguay.
I would like to find out how my grandfather got to Uruguay. (The Gezina was a cargo ship I believe and was built in Norway)

I found a finnish newspaper clip where he finished cooking class 1909 which according to the translator was some kind of marine school in Turku Finland.
Does anyone know where I might look to trace my grandfather's steps back to Finland. I tried looking on Finnish websites but really do not know what I am looking for.
I would like to find records of his voyage.
(I found Otto Albert Soderholm his father's passport number and ship to USA)
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Tracy Williams

He was probably born in the Kumlinge parish on the Åland islands on 26 September 1891. See this record from the "HisKi" database:

http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en+t3731968

This record shows the marriage of the parents:

Images of Kumlinge church records are apparently available at the Swedish ArkivDigital site (pay site), see:

http://www.arkivdigital.net/sources/3729?county=34

There is also an entry at the Finnish sailor database indicating that he was a seaman from about 1909 to 1915 (at Turku seamen's house). I did not find any emigration or passenger records. There are crew lists for ships at the Turku regional archives but you would have to get there to see them.

Hope this helps anyway, let me know if you have any questions

Thanks Karl,
I have the Kumlinge records for the marriage of Otto Albert and Ida and a record for Otto Harald but I thought he was born in Abo (he states on his records he was born in Abo) I have attached baptism/ birth entry not sure which it is now.
Are you able to tell me the names of the other people mentioned in the record.

I couldn't access the last link as you need to have a subscription to access the data.

By the way, I noticed now that the birth record is actually available online here: http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=9141590.

The other people are godparents. They are, as far as I can read:
- widow Maria Karlssen
- miss Olga Aurora Forsén
- Johan Julius Ferdinand Lindberg (profession brickmaker - not sure if that is the correct translation)
All from Åbo (Turku)
Baptized by K. N. Lehtonen, from sailors mission in Åbo

Since all the people are from Åbo it seems clear the family had strong connections there. Maybe Otto was actually born in Åbo though his father seems to have been working in Kumlinge.

Surnames: Soderholm, Engblom
Thank you Karl,
Otto Albert was then a customs officer maybe being in Kumlinge had something to do with his work.
I don't know of the other names. Ida Emilia Engblom had a sister Olga Helena Engblom, I thought that may have been her but the middle name is different. Their mother was Helena Christina Anjalin- b. 13 Jul 1834 Uskela, Finland d. 23 Jul 1919 Turku, Finland, I don't think she married the girls father. I cannot find any information.
Thank you again for your help.
