Please can any one help..have hit a brick wall?
I have found a descendant David Elias born 1854/55 Cardigan , Wales Occupation Carpenter leaving for Canterbury on the British Queen in Nov 1883..along with his wife Jane and children John 1881, Susannah 1883...after that I am unable to track them down.
I would love to know any details regarding their life in New Zealand..did they die there? etc.
I beleive that 3 more children were born in New Zealand..and they were supposed to return to the UK but, no trace of them here.
All info would be a massive help.
Thank you

David, Jane, John & Susannah arrived on the British Queen 11 October 1883. The passenger record has their destination listed as not nominated which means they may have landed at Dunedin, Otago or Christchurch, Canterbury. The date listed against their arrival is 11 October which is the date of arrival at Dunedin.

NZ record show 3 children born surname Elias post 1883 with parents David & Jane.
4 October 1884 - Daniel David - Birth Registered in Lyttleton
24 July 1886 - Mary - Birth Registered in Wellington
28 July 1888 - Elizabeth Jane - 2 Birth's of this name registered in July 1888. One in Wellington the other Cromwell, Otago.

Daniel David Elias served as a Sergeant in the NZ Rife Brigade WWI. His next of Kin listed as Elsie Florence Elias (wife). A quick search reveals her name as Pascoe. They lived in Wellington at the time.

I'm sure this should lead you along the right path Hope this has been of some help.

Cheers - Sean (Scotland)

I couldn't help myslf and looked a bit further. Jane appears as Grace Jane Elias in NZ electoral rolls.
Although David is hard to find. I get the impression that they did not always live together. If you search the Wellington online Cemetery Search you will find David, Grace Jane & thier son Daniel and Daniels wife there. Also another Elias.
I found Susannah's Grave in Paparaumu Beach Cemetery with a very clear headstone which I have attached for you.Once you input her info with that of her husband it should connect to you to others researching the same family including a picture of Jane which I have copied and attached.

Oh wow...appreciate you looking further and the extra info..especially as I can search the public trees but not view or contact the owners...thanks to your tip am now learning to find and navigate the NZ websites.
Must admit am at a loss as to why Jane adopted the name Grace...I found her marriage in Cardigan in 1880 and on the 1881 census there!! She was a Davies ..daughter of David abt 1831.
It was amazing to see a photo. Found the passenger lists on FamilySearch which was a bonus.

Thank You again.

Also have a look at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast
When you do a search make sure you mark the "exact phrase" (which is above the search line). I have found this site to be very interesting. It mentions the marriage of one of David Elias' daughters.

I like to look at www.archives.govt.nz and you can get to www.archway.archives.govt.nz from there too. If it says view digitised copy you can see the item (military files) but in some cases you can order the article. The military records for a Daniel David Elias are available to view.
Good luck.
