Family name

Classification: Query
Surnames: Gerales, Gentry, Whitten
My paternal great grandmother's family name was "Gerales" and according to family lore she gave my paternal grandfather this name as his middle name. It is said that her marriage certificate(which is destroyed), she was married during Reconstruction in the US state of South Carolina ,list her as "foreign". Some family members have insisted that she was Spanish and others that she was Mexican. Does anyone have any info on this name or heard of someone marrying a Confederate veteran in the 19th century?

My email is "padre_oso@hotmail.com

There was a Confederate soldier by the name of J.A. Gerales who was in Company G, 2 Battalion, Georgia, as a private, appearing on the register "Receiving and Wayside Hospitall or General Hospital No. 9, Richmond Virginia - Admitted Aug 21, 1864, Disposition: Jackson, Date: Aug 22, 1864" No other information than this.
