Good answer Cyndi. mpalmeri1980, the forum cannot evaluate the correctness of any aspect of an immigration record for someone about whom nothing has been shared, not even his name! You might be looking at the wrong passenger manifest(s); the forum has no way of judging. In general, a crossed out name means the person did not board the ship. In general, errors happen in all kinds of records.

I have seen the same thing on one of my family members records. I beleive that it means they werent on that ship. For some reason they were scheduled but didnt board. This is why I think this. I found my family member on a later record and also I know her traveling partner backed out and she also was crossed off of the first record.A very old aunt told me the traveling partner decided not to come to America. I hope this helps
I have a GG Grandmother Named Elizabeth Jones born about 1828. I believe she was born in England and came to America sometime in 1840's or 50s. I've been told she lived in Penn and moved to Zanesville, Ohio and Married George Edwards in 1854. I have never been able to figure out how they met. My grandfather come from England (Liverpool)in Oct of 1852.
My grandfather was on board a shop named States Rights. I have had no luck in finding her in any records other than marriage in 1854. George traveled to America with his brother William who married a Mary Jones. So could be 2 brothers married 2 sisters .
I located a relative on a ship's passenger manifest on May 1905 but his name and accompanying data was neatly crossed through across all his information. Then in June 1905 I believe my same relative appears again on another passenger's ship manifest.
I am relatively certain that they are the same person based on the accompanying data match from each of the manifests.
The questions: When a name is crossed through would that be that the person was denied entry and returned to his native country. If so, are there documents that may detail why entry was denied?
Thank you all in advance for your help.

Place of origin for German g-g-grandmother

Hi,
I'm trying to find the place of origin for my g-g-grandmother Maria (or Ann Mary) Baumann who emigrated from Germany eventually to Australia via the UK in 1857. I have her journey from Liverpool to Australia in 1857, and I have two possibles for her initial journey from (probably) Rotterdam to London which, if correct, suggest she would have been in the UK for between 17 months and 4 years. Neither gives a place of origin. One however was on the Batavier, a Rotterdam-registered steamship, arranged by the Mainz-based agent Carl Ahlborn. The other just gives Rotterdam-London and a date, no ship's name.
Any advice on where to turn next would be gratefully received.
Heather.

Ship's manifests were made out in port before the ship left. I've seen cross-outs before. They happen when someone buys tickets but then doesn't actually make it on the boat (could be due to illness). Hopefully, the boat where your relatives' names were not crossed out was the last of the three.

Another possibility is clerical error. If the clerk had several manifests on his (likely) desk and just wrote in the wrong one.

Yes, the one where they were not crossed out is almost certainly the one they traveled on.

Cyndi
My search results for my great grandfather brought up three different ships all listing his name and the lady he traveled with. Two of the boats arrived in July 1906 and one in June. Two records have their names crossed out and the one where they are not, the boat only has 4 passengers.

Is there an explanation as to why he was crossed out or why he may be listed on all 3 ships, when clearly the timeline of all records make that a physical impossibility? Did they maybe go from one boat to another? Should I assume the record that does not have their names crossed out is the correct one?

The sailing distance would be somewhat greater.

Entering "steamship from bremen to southampton" brings up quite lot of information, including this very interesting site which might answer your questions:

http://www.gjenvick.com/SteamshipArticles/index.html#axzz2FW...

Hello, I was wondering if there is anyone out there who might be able to help me with the following:

My great great grandparents left Bremen, Germany in May of 1861, they were on the Steamship "New York" I have found out that they arrived in South Hampton, England. They left South Hampton, England on May 15, 1861, and arrived at Castle Garden in New York City on May 28, 1861.
My question is:

I was wondering if anyone out there knows how many nautical miles it is from Bremen, Germany to South Hampton, England and can you give me at least a rough estimation as to how many days it would take a steamship like the New York to go from Bremen to South Hampton?

I am hoping to figure out the day that they might have left Bremen, Germany.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Keith Lawrence

k79lawrence@gmail.com

Albert Gallatin passenger manifest 05/10/1850
On the line entry for John Cusac, there is an asterisk to the left of his name. I have scrolled through the entire manifest and do not see anyplace with a notation pertaining to the asterisk. If the notation was made on a part of the document that was not scanned, is there another way I can find it?
When I look a the manifest entries on the NARA site, I see that the baby Patrick was noted as BORN AT SEA. I don't see that on the scanned image. I suspect that is what the asterisk is for, but the asterisk is not next to Patrick's name. Other babies born at sea have a note in the right hand column. I don't want to miss any additional information that might exist for this family.
Thank you very much for any help you can offer.

Hi JL,

I just came across the same issue, so I did a Google search for "interpreting ship's manifests" and found a helpful blogpost that said:

"Sometimes an entire line is crossed out, not because the passenger was not on board, but because they are officially listed on another page of the manifest."
(You can read the whole post at http://stephendanko.com/blog/268)

In a perfect world, the "other page" where the passenger is listed should have been indexed and displayed separately in your search results, but if it wasn't, probably your next best option (that is, if you're like me and hate to leave any stone unturned) would be to manually scroll through all of the other pages of the manifest to see if you can find her somewhere else.

But first you might want to re-visit your search results first to make sure any search results you might have assumed were duplicate hits (because there are always plenty of those) aren't in fact representing different pages on the manifest where your Aunt Ann might be listed...it's definitely worth clicking through those before tackling the whole manifest!

Either way, hope you find her!

My grandmother and aunt immigrated together in 1906. Or so I thought. I see now that my aunt's line in crossed through. What does it mean? Did she not board the ship?
What do you think? I have attached the lines in two parts since they were too long to do in one snip. Thank you so much for any wisdom you can give me. My grandmother is MaryAnn McHale and my aunt was Ann McHale. She did not die during the crossing, because she is mentioned in a later obituary. Thank you!

Turned back at Ellis Island

Hi,

Does anybody know if there are any records which might contain information about immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island only to be turned back for medical or other reasons? According to family anecdotes, reletives on two sides of my family had this unfortunate experience.

One family, the Janofsky's, were said to have been turned back due to the father getting something in his eye just before inspection, which was mistaken for a case of pink eye. He and his family were refused entry and sent back to Poland where they likely perished in the Lodz ghetto.

Another family member was said to have been turned back due to a mental illness of some kind. Luckily, he may have arrived with other siblings, and I might find some info on the ship's manifest.

My question though, is what OTHER records, besides manifests, might exist regarding these unfortunates who were turned away?

Thanks,

Abe

Thanks -the name is: Juliana Paja, Arrived: Sept. 25, 1911
Ship: Prinz Friedrich Willhelm -I assumed she was traveling with a child approx. 18 mos. old but from the ship manifest I can't tell. I was informed that lpc meant 1 person w/child, and that would have made sense to me. I'm not so sure now. Juliana did get deported but I thought it was because of the sick child. Juliana returns to the US in June 1913 -Ship: Rhein, through the port of Baltimore with a child who is definately listed. You have been very helpful and I thank you!

The first is actually lpc, likely to be a public charge. For the second, 250 is probably being misread. Can you list the immigrant, the date and the ship so that the response will be more than mere conjecture.

Are there any advanced or "smart" search engines out there that enable search for multiple names? I've identified several possible "Bauer" relations who immigrated from Germany to Ohio, with common names (Jacob, John/Johannes, Charles), for which I'd like to search for immigration records where they appear together. I can search passenger lists, etc., for separate names, but triangulating is quite time consuming. I'd like to search for records that have Jacob and John together or in close proximity - that would be a huge time saver. Any search tools like that out there?
