Trying to locate a town and birth records

Classification: Query
Surnames: Kopcho, Malato
My great grandpa immigrated here from a town called Velki Komyata or Velka Komjati Czechoslovakia (Austria Hungry) in April 1914. I believe that is the last town he was living in- it is where he was born in 1889. His name is Andrew Kopcho. On 1/25/1911 he married Sofia Malato Kopcho (born 1891 in Czechoslovakia) in St. Michaels Church and their Rev was John Haroby in Austria-Hungry. I have hit a serious dead end and can not find their parents name or even the town listed on their citizenship papers. I believe the town listed is the same as Velikiye Komyaty, Ukraine. Would I be right on that thought? Also I am new to this so any tips to getting past this hurdle would be greatly appreciated!

Your gt.grandparents could not have been born in Czechoslovakia in 1914 for the simple reason the country did not exist. Czechoslovakia was formed out of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1919. In the 1990s, after the collapse of Communism it split again into the Czech and Slovak Republics. Records in the US for example, made in the period that Czechoslavakia existed, might use the name for convenience. Most of what is now the Ukraine was also in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and as the town names seem so similar I would guess you should be looking towards Ukraine for the records you want. It might help to post on the Ukraine board or one of the boards under Historical Regions. Hope this helps a bit.

1914 was the year he immigrated. He was born in 1889 and that was all we had to go off of because of his naturalization papers. I have reached out to someone who is researching that town but she couldn't tell me much other then a few other spellings we are still at a brick wall since we can not find anything past 1930 with his name on it. I will try to find the other boards to see what I can find out. Thanks!
