Thanks, this makes sense. If I search on name origin programs, they indicate Lithunian indeed. That may have been well before my Grandfather's time. I know when my mother was born (1925) and wanted to attend Saturday German school in Baltimore, he said 'No, you are an American, you will speak English!'. And that was the end of that. I went to an Obereiner (his mother's maiden name)Reunion several years ago. They were from the Wyzajny area and came to America in the 1950's. Both survived WWII and the territorial line changes to Poland (I believe, my world history is terrible). They were very insistant they considered themselves German not Polish or Russian. They explained some of the conditions they lived under at the time and provided me a hand drawn map, of their village, by one of their family members based on memory.
