Rastadt Colony, Saskatchewan, Canada (7 Colony or St. Peter's Colony)
My great grandfather Anton Schmidt was one of the first settlers of Rastadt (now St. Peter's) Colony near Kronau, Saskatchewan. I am looking for any information about the Colony from it's early days, or any photos from that time, or even later ones. Some of the names of people who settled Rastadt include: Jakob Reinhardt, Johannes Wollbaum, Simon Schmidt, Georg M. Koch, Joseph Obrigevitch, Hyeronimus Ebenal, Raymond Dielschnieder, Peter Herauf, Johann Obrigevich, Anton Schmidt, Christoph Fahlmann and Johannes Eberle.

Hi My name is Brenda Larsen it use to be Eberle I grew up in the Colony our original homestead is still there and my brother lives there. We lived next to the Schmidts. I recalled the name being Mynard Schmidt. Although I am to young to have ever known them. They were long gone when I was born. But I do remember the old mud house being there for years because as kids we use to explore it even though we we told not to because it was not safe to go in. I can still remember every detail of it. And aLL THE CHOCK CHERRY BUSHES THAT USE TO GROW INFRONT OF IT. There was an age old story that there was a lost diamond ring in the house so not knowing if it was true but we all wanted to find it. The house stood for as long as I can remember then it was gone not to sure what happened to it. What is it you would like to know? I have alot of knowledge of the Colony itself I went to school in the tiny school house until grade 5 when it was shut down. I am 51 years old now.I have only one living aunt left on the Eberle side right now and she has told me stories although her and Mynard did not like each other. She told me one that I find so funny. She said that Mynards chicken had layed some eggs on the buggy in the Eberle yard and he accused her of stealing his eggs. There are not alot of the original people there anymore just us and the Heraufs. My young brother has alot of knowlege of things and has tracked all of our ancestry he has even travel accross the world and met some of them. If I can be of any help let me know. Brenda

Re: Rastadt Colony, Saskatchewan, Canada (7 Colony or St. Peter's Colony)
Hi Brenda, thank you so much for answering my post, I love the story about the eggs, that’s priceless! I think the Minard Schmidt you are talking about would be my great grandfather Anton’s youngest son. I have a photo of the house you are talking about, I think it was torn down in the early 1980’s, by one of the grandchildren that owned it. I’ve never heard the legend about the diamond ring before though! I didn’t grow up in the area, so I didn’t know much about Colony until recently. The only written information on the Colony’s history I have comes from Father Metzger’s article written in the 1970’s & a book titled Short Stories of Five Colonies by Sebastian Michael Deck. Do you know of any other written history books about the Colony? I would love to hear any other stories you have about the Colony around the time the Schmidt’s lived there. I also don’t have many old pictures of the Colony, so if you have any photos from when the colony was started to around the 1950’s or so, I would love to see them. So far the only ones I have from that time are a photo of Anton Schmidt playing cards with Father Metzger & the photo of the old Schmidt house. You also mentioned your brother had traced the Eberle history back to the old country? I have an Eberle on the other side of my family tree. My great great great grandmother was Anna Marie Eberle (born 1832, died 1920-U.S.) married to Adam Wandler (born 1830, died 1903-Russia) on 28 Jan 1852 in Rastadt, Russia. I believe Anna Marie Eberle’s had a sister named Catharina, & their parents were Jacob Eberle & Veronica Frohlich. I’m not sure if there’s a connection, but if your brother knows these names I would love to know more about their family, as this is all the information I have on the Eberle side. My email is farmgirl699-1@yahoo.caThanks again, Lea Schmidt

Hi, I do know a bit about the Dielschneider family, as they were married into mine. Which Dielschneiders were you looking for information on? I also have some information on the Koch family, but I don't have a George Michael, do you have any names of his family? Although I don't have a Frank Schmidt married to a Christina Bachmeier on my current tree, I am missing a branch of my Schmidt family. Family legend goes that 3 Schmidt brothers came to Saskatchewan from Rastadt, Russia in the late 1800's. I know what happened to Anton Schmidt & Simon Schmidt, but I'm not sure of the name of the third brother, or what happened to him. Legend goes that he lived in St. Peter's Colony for a while before heading north & that he wanted to lived somewhere that had more lakes. Do you have any dates for Frank Schmidt? You can contact me at farmgirl699-1@yahoo.caHope I can help, Lea
