Location of Kunyon, Russia
My great-grandfather, Gottlieb Henschell, born June 1860, always gave his place of birth as near Stettin, which is now Szczecin, Poland. However on his naturalization papers he cites "Kunyon, Russia" as his birthplace. Of course, this is probably a phonetic spelling. He was ethnically German and his family may have been Volhynians. Is the place name - or a similar placename - familiar to anyone?

Re: Location of Kunyon, Russia
It's a spelling of a Russian word meaning Canyon. I haven't found anything like that in a list of German villages in Russia. You need to know the region or something.

Re: Location of Kunyon, Russia
There is a place in Volhynia called Kunan which might fit. It is located 40-50 km NW of Wolodarsk.

Oh, thanks for that, but I located the place several years back. It's actually in present-day Poland, and is now called Konin.
