Can anyone give me any ideas of how to trace an ancestor that came to America and went back to Germany in the 1700s?

They left the two youngest here who had married locals but the oldest Children went with them. At least until I take a really good dig, it looks as if they went back. The dates of death in Germany are firm so far.
