Karl Johan Larsson (Charles John Larsson)

My g.g.grandfather was Karl Johan Larsson aka Charles John Larsson, born Norkopping, Sweden about 1838. About 1863, he met his future bride on board a ship, port of departure London, destination unknown. The bride disembarked in Sydney, Australia, worked as a domestic and they married there in 1865. The marriage record shows his parents as Charles Larsson, farmer and _____ Hansdotter.
In 1868, bride and child sailed from Sydney home to London, England. From 1869 to about 1875, Charles John Larsson worked shore jobs in London, but went back to sea by 1881. I was told he worked for White Star and sailed out of London until his death between 1897 and 1901.
Lots of "abouts" in this story, but it is all I have. ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

Does anyone know the parents of Ernest or Ernst Engstrom and Jennie (Radlund or Rodlund) who came from Sweden about 1902? They sailed from Liverpool on the ship "Sarnia" with their 2 sons, Erick and Rudolph or Ernst Rudolph and landed in New York. I also read that the Sarnia was scrapped in 1896 but in 1904, it is sailing again, (probably just refitted). They lived in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and they are the grandparents of my good friend. Her mother was Doris Engstrom (Hawkins) but she passed away when my friend was an infant so any info would be greatly appreciated.
lilliangourd@yahoo.com

If it is I have wrote him a letter and mailed it a couple of days ago. I have also tried calling him but have not got ahold of him yet but will keep trying. Thank you

I was going to ask you if you knew where they lived when they died, when I found the replies Judy Baouab gave you in 2009. Did you ever order the inventories of Oskar's and Nelly's estates, bouppteckningarna? It is still your best bet to find the names and adresses of their children and other heirs.

Anyway, as both Oskar and Nelly died in Gualöv I made a quick search of the Swedish phonebooks online and found one man called Lang living there. As it is a small community of 500 inhabitants, chances are he is related to them. To find him go to www.hitta.se, in the first box "Vad?" enter the name Lang, and in the second box "Var?" enter the location Gualöv. You will get both his phonenumber, his adress and a map of where he lives in Gualöv.

Best of luck

Hi, I am looking for anybody who might be researching Oskar and Nelly Lang. Oskar was born in Nasum, Kristianstad (Skane) on December 29,1895 and passed away Febuary 19,1969. Nelly Henrietta Perrson (Lang after marrying) was born on September 2.1998 in Ivetofta, Kristianstad (Skane) and passed away on June 30,1976. I am looking for any of their children or grand children still living in Sweden. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, perrson family

SAGADOHOC - 1853 Göteborg to Boston

The Ship Sagadohoc arrived in Boston, Mass. on 24 October 1853 from a direct voyage from Göteborg. How can I find the date of departure from Sweden?

The passenger list shows Fiskes was the Master and 594 is written in the "burthen __594__ 95ths tons" blank on the form. I counted 219 passengers on the list. All were from Sweden. "Died on Voyage" was written next to 56 of those names. That is over 25% of the passengers who died. When 1 in 4 passengers die, there has got to be a story -- but so far I find nothing so I must not be looking in the right places. If anyone has any information or helpful hints to share, I would appreciate. (I'm working on identifying the 219 passengers. Several from Småland and Östergötland close to Lake Vättern identified so far. 1 Känard_N_ family.)

Sandra, I found land like he owned 284 acres of land in different plots in Faithorn MI, He is listed as CC Johnson on each of the 4 plots. It seems like in Wisconsin there was also a CC Johnson who owned land in Harmony Wisconsin in 1896 and right below his says Caroline Johnson, which I thought strange with his wife at times being listed as Caroline.

On his obituary it said he was 86 at death which would have made his birthdate 1856, the photo on the obituary page shows a vehicle with no snow on the ground and it talks about an agency coming to Rhinelander Wisconsin on July 3, 1942. It also showed his name at the heading as Charles Johnson, but the first line of the obit says Charles Johnston and only spelled that way, The mention of his sons shows their last name as Johnston also but it gives his birth date as Dec 15, 1855 on the obit?

Well, one day we you and I will break this mistery. Thanks Rita

did you find a Charles Johnson with a middle initial as E? Or a birth date of 1857 or that would have been in his 80's in 1942. I have a marriage doc that says he is 25 when they married, could have been a mistake, but maybe it is his true age? And an immigration date of 1875? After he got into the USA I don't know if he went right to Michigan or a different state? I also don't know if he stayed a bachelor or was married and divorced or widowed? He and Carrie married in 1882. Let me know what you think?

I see what you are saying and I agree. There was a woman who tried once and came up with a family, but I don't know how you would check and how it would lead to my Charles Johnson.
Osterberg was an orphan John Edward Johnson Osterberg with his aunt to MN. in 1869 which is one of the imm dates listed on the census.
Other than that I don't know of anything else unless he was related to his wife and I am not looking that direction. I will still be checking this direction. Rita

Hi, I did check small towns around Stockholm, it took me a day :) I checked suburbs and islands like tumba, tyreso, hasselby, danderyd, vaxholm etc.
I even checked some cities like Flen, Trosa and Nykoping which are 100 kilometers from Stockholm. But I can't see why someone would say they are from Stockholm when they come from Uppsala or something.
And Some of the church books are unreadable or nonexistent though, unfortunately.
He could also be an illegal immigrant, running away from doing the military service....
It seems strange that he never talked about his family or went back to visit them. But if he was an orphan he would still exist in the church books.
Sandra, I see the confusion just keeps going. My mother before she died said that he Charles Johnson had been in the USA 10 years before her grandmother Carrie Anderson Johnson who got here in 1881. I don't know where the confusion is at, if it is his birth date or the area which he was suppose to be from???

On one of the marriage license of his daughter it shows his name as Charles E. Johnson. Another record shows the mother as Mary Olsen as mother of the bride for another daughter. Now maybe there are clues with some of what is wrote? I found Carrie because one daughter had Carrie Gorgensen (Jorgenson)The name Jorgenson was her grandfathers name who raised her after her mother died when she was born and brought her and his family to the USA.

I know the sound of names were written down because lots of times that is the only way some people could write. Is there any other thing I could go to and look for him? I do not have the Swedish ancestry to look anything up. Is there a way that it might be a smaller city closer to Stockholm? Or just the name and date of birth?

Another thing he was suppose to be 18 years old when he came to the USA and he was the only one who came. I don't know if he had family in Sweden, because he never spoke of his family to any other family members. For all I know he could have been running away from something back there or maybe he was an orphan? I know that he has to be somewhere or there has to be some way of looking on a doccument to see where he came from. I don't know where he was naturalized, Michigan or NY area after he came in? I wouldn't know how to check since there are so many Charles Johnson's out there. I KNOW he owned a sawmill and worked it with his son and son in laws. I know he owned property in Faithorn Michigan I know he lost his home and divorced. The divorce decree I have and it never mentions anything about where he came from. But there just has to be a way we can locate him. Thanks Rita

Rita, I have now searched the birthbooks from around Stockholm. And all I have found was two Carl Johan born on the 15th of Dec 1855. So the middle initials are maybe wrong.
One of them was born i Spanga, Stockholm and the name of his father was: Johan Peter Wahlberg, so Carl Johans last namne could have been Johansson or he took the name Wahlberg...
The other Carl Johan was born in Maria, Stockholm and the name of his father was Johan Petter Pettersson, so Carl Johans last name is probably Johansson.
Unfortunately I lost track of them both in the churchbooks, there were no reference when they moved. Maybe because it is such a big city.
But if want me to make another try, I will.
I also made a search on Ancestry, (maybe you did that too)
and there was at least one Carl from Stockholm:

New York, passagerarlistor, 1820-1957
Invandring & naturalisering (Immigration and naturalization)
Namn: Carl J Jonsson
Födelse	1855
Härkomst	Sweden
Ankomst	14 Jun 1881, New York
Avfärd	Glasgow, Scotland
Destination	United States of America

New York, passagerarlistor, 1820-1957
Invandring & naturalisering
Namn: Carl W Jonsson
Födelse	1855
Härkomst	Sweden
Ankomst	27 Apr 1886, New York
Avfärd	Liverpool, England
Destination	United States of America

New York, passagerarlistor, 1820-1957
Invandring & naturalisering
Namn: Carl Jonsson
Födelse	1855
Härkomst	Sweden
Ankomst	20 May 1879, New York
Avfärd	Glasgow, Scotland
Destination	United States of America

Swedish Emigration Records, 1783-1951
Invandring & naturalisering
Namn: Carl Johan Johansson
Födelse	1855
Inga	Stockholm, Stockholm
Bostadsort	Sweden
Ankomst	2 06 1881, Philadelphia
Hi, Yes I think it is strange too, that none of his relatives were interested in his Swedish background. It must have been such a difficult (and exciting) trip, to go all the way to America and start a new life, far far away from their loved ones...
Anyway, what I can do is check the Swedish churchbooks to find any carl jonsson, or similar, who was born around Stockholm, at that date. I dont know if you are familiar with the Swedish books, but the priests also wrote when people emigrated,
Because, i do not know if there is anywhere where they have to declare where in Sweden they were born.
I have trouble myself with a relative who emigrated. I know excactly when and where he was born and that he bought a ticket to New York. But after that I have lost him. But I have just started searching for him so I have many ways left :)
regards
/sandra

Hi,

what you could do is to post a message on the Swedish genealogy board asking the same question. There is an English section there and the people are really knowledgeable and helpful.

Make sure to provide all the details that you have in one post (including the name of his brother), which will help them trying to find him for you including these two URLs (death and marriage certificates).
http://tinyurl.com/atmrr4s
http://tinyurl.com/ar3odw6

There forum is free of charge but you will have to register in order to create a post (don't worry, there are no spam emails sent out at all).

http://aforum.genealogi.se/discus/
1. Get a user account, link at the bottom of the page
2. Then go to topics and choose "discussions in english", link at the bottom of the page.

I hope that helps
Anna

The date on his death certificate listed his birth as Dec 15, 1855 Sweden. No I was using Horsens as an example since his wife was suppose to be from that area in DK but was around As Vejile DK. It was just said for Charles as Stockholm.

He died in Rhinelander Wisconsin June 30 1942. I was told by his granddaughter that he saw the Statue of Liberty when coming into the USA so he came in through New York. Then she said he went to Michigan from there, I don't know how valid her comments are. They didn't know where in Sweden he came from, she said he didn't talk about it, or she doesn't remember? I think it odd that none of the different lines, Johnson, LaRoche, Bengtson families don't know where he came from other than Sweden?

I have relatives in Menominee County Michigan who I will try to get information that she can maybe look up. Right now it would be hard for her since it is winter worse up that direction than here. I know on the license for marriage on some of the daughters information, unless the person writing out the form didn't understand what she said and put an E for Charles E Johnson, when everything else has Charles C Johnson? I need to ask you, is there anything that Charles would have had to put Where in Sweden he came from? I can not get his naturalization paper copies, since I don't know for sure what date he came in to the country and if he got the naturalization in Michigan or was it in New York where he came in from Sweden??Thank you for any help you can give me on this.
Hi Anna

I will get the original photocopy from my father in law - my husband will see him on the 16th.

I assumed that his parents names had been anglisised and read them as Henry Adam Adamson and Mary Adamson - maiden name Brumbet. The closest Swedish surname I found for Brumbet was Brumbech. (A Maria Lovisa Brumbech)

His father is listed as a carpenter.

The typed copy lists place of origin as Hernggahn but I can't find any place with that name in Sweden. I have tried all the variations of how it possibly should have been spelt but have drawn a blank so far.

My father in law is 88 and his Grandfather John Adamson died about 6 years before he was born - he does not remember if he ever heard John's brother's name.

A lot of the early records in NZ were terrible

Hi,

is there any chance that you can scan just the birth place, fathers and mothers details in a higher resolution? Its really quite hard to see what it says?

Have a look at the fathers name... doesn't it say Adam E Jonson? The mothers name Mary/May I./J. Jonson? We had a patronymic naming convention back then so that would make sense. The boys names would be Adams-son.

I cannot see what the first name of the father is, starting with H...Henry?

What does it say on line 2?

The birth place is interesting, the second line looks like it ends with ...gatan. Gatan means street in Sweden.

Did his brother get married by any chance? If yes, his marriage certificate might be clearer in terms of the handwriting.

Let me know what you think and if you are able to scan it in a higher resolution, just those last bits

Anna

Hi Anna

Thanks for the response

Unfortunately I very little information although I do have a scan of part of the hand written marriage certificate which I have attached. I have guessed what his mother's surname may have been based on what it possibly sounded like when spoken with a Swedish accent as the writing and spelling indicates that the person filling in the certificate was not very profficient at written English.
I understand that John and his brother did emigrate to NZ together and because they possibly worked for their passage there is no record of them on passenger lists. John was a carpenter by trade.
I don't know whether they came directly to NZ - It may have been via the UK the US or Australia.
They apparently arrived in Christchurch (or Timaru) and went to the West Coast of the South Island from there. I found a grave site in Ross which is on the West Coast of the South Island for a Henry Adamson - Roman Catholic but all church records were destroyed in a fire. I know that John was a catholic and may have left Sweden because of his religon - I understand that the Catholic religion was not popular in the mid 1980s.
John's death certificate (1917) states he had been in NZ for 40 years so his arrival would have been in approx. 1877.

Regards

Dale

Hi,

I think ellisislandrecords.org only goes as far back as 1892
then there is http://www.castlegarden.org/ which goes back to 1820-1913

You could contact the state archives for Värmland and ask if they know: http://tinyurl.com/avpjmkk

I had a look and found information about both Mattis and Brittas death here:
Glava AI:21 (1886-1890) Bild 374 / sid 361 (AID: v11280.b374.s361, NAD: SE/VA/13154)

Mattis Jansson, b. 14 DEC 1806 in Glava, Värmlands län, Värmland. Died 14 JUL 1889.
Britta Eriksdotter, b. 19 DEC 1811 in Glava, Värmlands län, Värmland. Died 11 JAN 1887.

NB. That page also contains information about Säths and Jans wifes and children.

I had a look for and found Mattis probate here:
Gillbergs häradsrätt FII:29 (1887-1890) Bild 668 / sid 1331 (AID: v47654.b668.s1331, NAD: SE/VA/11147)
I was hoping that it would state the last name of Nils and also the whereabouts of the 3 siblings in the US but all it says is that they are at a known place in the US. Its all witnessed by their sibling Jan, who must have had their addresses.
Hi Diane,

I really do hope its him :)

We do use middle names, but when there is a "-son" at the end of it its usually a last name.

I just realised that I've made as spelling mistake on Mats/Mattis last name, I've corrected it in the last post. It now reads Jansson. Which more than likely means that Mattis fathers name was Jan.

Let me know if you need any further help and I'll see what I can do.

Anna

OMY GOODNESS I am having such trouble because of the DOBs. Different documents have different ages for him all within 1 yr of each other. The 1885 Census record has him at 42 years of age on JAN 1st, that sounds right since his birthday making him 43 would have been Jan 6th.

So perhaps he is indeed the Nils Mattsson with DOB 6 jan 1842 :o)

sorry for so many posts, I have not delved into my tree for months and when I got your email I had to relook at so many things.

Thanks so much ANNA
are you of swedish ancestry?

Diane
