Looking for Alex Shadin (Shaden, Shadden, Sjadin?)
My husband's great-grandfather, Alexander Leander Shadin, is a mystery I'd like to solve. He was born in Sweden in the late 1800s, emigrated to Canada, we believe as a child, and married Helen Ryan (born 1895, we believe in Canada). We know the spelling of his last name was "updated" when he emigrated, but his grandson insists it was pronounced "Sha-deen."
History, we know that he was a member of the Regina police force in the early 1900s, that he married Helen Ryan and had at least six children, all of whom were, I believe, born in Regina. The eldest were twins, George and Cora, and were born in 1919. George passed away as a child, and Cora in 2005.
If anyone has any idea where to find information about Alex Shadin, please let me know!

Re: Looking for Alex Shadin (Shaden, Shadden, Sjadin?)
This is only a guess, so I am not 100% sure this is the right man.
From the parish Rätan in Jämtland , Sweden a boy emigrated 1895 to US (or Canada) with his mother and two sisters. His name was Alex Leander born 03/30/1888, the mother was Karin Andersdotter born 08/21/1861, the sisters were Karolina b 1881 and Margareta b 1884. The father Anders Andersson born in Nyskoga, Värmland 03/13/1853 had emigrated already 1888 from the parish Rätan. Many people used another surename when they lived in US, so Andersson could have been something like Sjödin/Sjedin/Sedan etc.

Re: Looking for Alex Shadin (Shaden, Shadden, Sjadin?)
Thanks for this! I will check with his surviving daughters to confirm if he had any sisters, but I don't think this is the right man.
I found my Alexander Leander's death certificate shortly after I posted for help. It lists his birth-date as Nov. 23, 1891, in Newfoundland, but also that he's Swedish. I am in the process of trying to find anything I can about that...
edited to add: I've spent the better part of the day at this and have discovered only that Newfoundland has very little available in the way of records dating from this time. However, my husband tells me that his mother talked to his aunt who talked to her aunt who was adamant that her father (Alexander Leander) was born in Sweden.
I found another alternate spelling of the last name from Swedish emigration records from 1783-1951: Olaf A. Schedin, born abt 1851. However, I don't have a paid membership, so can't see any other info about him.

Re: Looking for Alex Shadin (Shaden, Shadden, Sjadin?)
Hi again! There is a man Olof Alfred Skedin (Schedin) born in the parish Alnö 09/03/1850 who emigrated to New York from Gothenborg via Hull in UK 06/24/1881. He was not married then and I do not know where in US he lived. He had a sister Eva Charlotta who emigrated 1882, she was born 1857.

Re: Looking for Alex Shadin (Shaden, Shadden, Sjadin?)
But this must be wellknown to you?? If not important for further research. Born Newfoundland 1891 , Nov. 23.. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/60754760/person/30102965233/p...So we have to look for Swedish emigrants before 1891 heading to Canada, and probably Schedin or Sjodin. Or not? Death certificate tells us he had been in Canada for 40 years and in BC for 30. So a family travelling in 1891?? Perhaps heading Minnesota ??
