Searching for a family leaving Sweden May 1868 ..by way of Hull and boarding a larger vessel in Liverpool for the trip to New York.
Johan Johanson born 1839 changed his name to John Tillman Stina Marie Johansdotter born 1845 Sven August Johanson born 1853 changed his name to Augustus George Tillman
I have found them in Sweden and again in the United States, but how did they get here?
Any help will be appreciated..thanks, Lindy Wise

Re: Incoming ships to Hull
They would have been taking the so-called "indirect route" - train-ship-train-ship - cheaper than the direct passenger lines from the bigger ports. One ticket would take them from their home station to (probably) Gothenburg, possibly Oslo, ship to Grimsby or Hull, train to Liverpool, ship to NY. As far as the ships from Scandinavia were concerned the Wilson Line almost had a monopoly so google Wilson Line. Also worth googling "indirect route" and "Norway Heritage" - there is a lot of information on the latter site.

Re: Incoming ships to Hull
Thank you for your reply and will send more information. The three mentioned were born in Hobsby, Sweden and emigration sheet shows them as Johan Eric Johanson emigrated 7 May 1868 ..age 29; Stina Marie Johansdotter emigrated 9 May 1868 .. age 23 and Sven August Johanson age 15 emigrated 9 May 1868..which makes me think the three came together.
Old family stories tell they came from Kalmar...not sure if that was by boat or over land to Goteburg. Johan Eric changed his name to John Tillman and in the Saunders County, Nebraska book he states "came by way of Hull to Liverpool, England where he took passage on a ship bound for New York. The voyage which took two weeks was a very pleasant one". If they left Sweden on May 9 they should have arrived NY by the end of May.
My family came from Norway. Grandpa Edwardson in 1910 took the "Rollo" from Christiana to Hull and told about the terrible train ride to Liverpool where he boarded a larger ship to Ellis Island.
I have seen where the Rollo ferried passengers from Goteburg to Hull..this may be the route the above named came. However, the strange thing about it I cannot find them coming into New York, and hope you can give me some hints. Thanks for whatever you can find. Lindy Wise

Re: Incoming ships to Hull
I think the place of birth should be Hogsby - the o has two little dots above it like the German umlaut. If you want to find when they landed you obviously need the name of the ship they travelled on from Liverpool. Try a bit of googling as suggested.
