No image is readily available for the original SS Adler, which was built in 1857. It would have looked similar (albeit smaller) to the original (first) SS Bremen, which was built a year later in 1858. Several images of the original SS Bremen are available on-line.

An exhaustive search of the Internet and in history books of the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping company resulted in zero images of the first SS Adler.

If I visit the archives of the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping company in Bremerhaven, Germany, and can obtain an image, I will be sure to post it for you.

Records of immigrants arriving at Canadian land and seaports from January 1, 1936 onwards remain in the custody of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

They do not make it easy.

A mail request must be made and the request must be accompanied by a signed consent from the person concerned or proof that he/she has been deceased 20 years. Proof of death can be a copy of a death record, a newspaper obituary or a photograph of the gravestone showing name and death date. Proof of death is not required if the person would be over 110 years of age.

In addition, applications for copies of documents must be submitted on an Access to Information Request Form by a Canadian citizen or an individual residing in Canada.

Re: Germany to NY via Panama?

I did some research about this, but at this moment I cannot find the specific page I looked at. One of my relatives from Germany arrived in NY on a ship from Aspinwall, Panama. If you look carefully at the list, it may be like the one I have where most of them are shown as "miners", a few have occupations in medical field, some are supervisory personnel, and one or two are shown as a wife travelling with an executive husband. This tells me they were a work crew whose assignment in Panama was complete. My research indicated they went to Panama for work. During the 1860s, there was a market for metals coming from that region for the U.S. government's use in civil war equipment and ammunition. There also was a railway built across the isthmus of Panama which was an easier route to go from east coast to west coast (and back) prior to the 1869 completion of the railway system in the U.S. I don't know if my relative arrived in U.S. first and then took work in Panama or if he "earned" his way to the U.S. by working in Panama. I will be looking for more information such as an earlier ship's log, but am not sure I will find anything newer. My relative was not married until after he settled in Pennsylvania after arrival from Aspinwall, Panama. Hope this helps.

Thank you. You're very kind but we believe Louis was an older man and deserted her during her pregnancy. The main issue is his surname and after much help from many kind people we still can't locate his family. The original info is Louis Emmanuelis? His first name in Greek is Elias however there are others as well as for his surname. I've been connected to Ellis, Nellas, Tsalamidas, Tsalamatas and many more. There's a photo from July 1938 Pennsylvania diaspora-it's shows a Greek coffee shop and the my dad resembles the owner in the photo minus the hair. :-) After too many years of searching i'm about to throw in the towel. It's sad and disappointing not to have closure knowing that my true grandfather and family wanted nothing to do with us. Thank you again for your help. :-)

Where did the exact date of arrival and ship's name come from?

Was it from another website?

The reason why you may not find it on the Ancestry website (specifically on the Cephalonia ship) is because there may have been a problem with the information on the other site. I have seen this before.. It is a mis-link of some sort.

I also did a page by page search of the arrivals specifically on the 30th of April, 1887 somewhere else, and did not see any arrivals of the Cephalonia at a port of New York.

Hope this helps, as you may be looking for something that does not exist... my opinion though.

He could still be out there! You may find in arriving on another ship, year, month...

Best to get as much census information as you can on Nils Olsson. Finding census records always helps me.

I have a "Heidi" book by Johanna Spyri with the name Waneen Argo inside the front cover with an address in Illinois and the date 11/1/1943. There's also a recipe card in the book with a note on it about the recipe. Perhaps the family of Waneen Argo would be interested in having the book and the note. According to info I've found, Waneen would have been born around 1932.

I've spent 20 years looking for this man. I even wrote to many relatives but no one replied-not even one response. This man was my true grandfather yet his name remained a secret until my grandmother's last days-then again we don't even have a correct spelling for him. He's gone, she's gone and my father is gone so what is the problem? There were too many people that were afraid to speak. We heard that they left Pa. went to Ohio but my grandmother obviously returned as she gave birth to my dad in Pa. on 5/16/30. His baptism papers were altered but i can see that a Goss family were his sponsors, his birth certificate was a mess! It wasn't "legally" filed until 1956-what a shame! To end, John P. Moros is not our grandfather-he was my dad's stepfather and a cruel one indeed! It's unfortunate that we have to carry his disgusting surname!

Hello, I have been doing the same for my grandfather who came to the USA at age 12,by himself from Poland. It is painstaking and time consuming to find even tidbits of info.I was finally able to find documents that he filed when he became an adult, seeking naturalization. Not sure about the UK,but in the US minors were not allowed to apply for citizenship. They had to be at least 18 years old.
You may be better off looking for records from later in her life, and then back track to immigration.Good luck to you.

Ships leaving Palestine for South America in early 1900's

I have been researching my family and my husband's family history, the Sidawi's, Farradj's and Halaby's, and would like to know how to find out which itinerary would a ship leaving Palestine take to reach Argentina or Chile. Where in Europe would the ship stop over on its way to South America?

Does anyone have relatives who have done this particular journey?
Thanks
Mona

What the hell??? A nasty reply?? For spending time finding and uploading a document? Even if it was the wrong one, you still spent the time. I could only go on what was on this forum and all I saw was dead silence after your upload. (meaning if there was a reply here, it was deleted before I saw it).

Shaking my head at how some people act (and I agree, that one has nothing to do with age).

Sorry this happened to you.

Cyndi
