My grandfather worked as a crew member as a baker that worked in the kitchen of Hamburg-Amerika Line ships. I have references (including US Census) that he emigrated to US in 1909 to New York. Family lore has it they he wanted to avoid conscription by Kaiser Wilhelm and "jumped ship". I have his work book that lists the ships he worked on. I obtained a copy of his applications for naturalization from NARA, On the application he lists the ship that he supposedly emigrated to New York on, but it was the first ship he came to America on when he was working as a crew member in 1905. He evidently lied or forgot when he filled out his naturalization papers wen naming the ship he came to New York on in 1909. I have been trying to find crew lists for Hamburg-Amerika lines in 1909, but have had no success over many years of looking. Any ideas?
