Hello~

I am looking for information about my Great-Grandfather, Michael Shimko (Simko after names were changed)He was born in Slovakia on 28 Dec 1882, immigrated I believe in 1899, and died on 10 May 1967 in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. He married my Great-Grandmother Katherine Machusko Simko on 12 Feb 1905 and they had 11 children. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

Slovakia was under the rule of Hungary in those days

Most likley his original name was Mihaly SIMKO.

There are several men by this name arriving in the late 1890s and early 1900s at the port of NY and one at the Port of Philadelphia (1899). But on one census record it gives his immigration year as 1904

Perhaps this is your GGM?

Name: Catha Macsusko
Arrival Date: 26 Mar 1899
Birth Year: abt 1890
Age: 9
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Hamburg
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Pretoria

Machusko would be an English spelling but in Hungary CH is written as CS, which has a sound like CH

Surnames: Shimko, Simko, Machusko
Hi--

My great grandfather was Andrew Machusko, your great grandmother's brother. I remember him--he died in 1977 when I was 14.

As near as I can figure, there is another sister born Anna Machusko (1900-1939) who married a man named John Shimko. Their children seemed to have kept the name Shimko.

I don't know if John Shimko is related to your great grandfather, but it seems like more than a coincidence that two sisters married men with the same last name.
