Re: UK Aristocracy

Some of this is probably due to fictitious trees, but don't forget there was no aristocracy here in the US, so the aristocrats had to marry the regular folks. I'm sure that some of them married into other well to do families, but there must have been plenty whose fortunes had dwindled in the UK, and came here to start over, and others who gave up that lifestyle once they came here simply because it didn't exist.

Am I the only person who is surprised how many USA family trees seem to have the UK aristrocracy marrying women from poor families. I am in the UK and I believe it would be so unusual as to be almost non existent. There will be children born out of wedlock, where the men of rich households thought it was OK to molest their servants, but in general the aristocracy marry aristocracy.

Border Crossing Record

I am in search of a border crossing record for Olaves/Olaf Johannesen and his wife Louise in May of 1882. His naturalization index card indicates they came through Detroit, Michigan. They resided in Racine, Wisconsin the rest of their lives. Any help would be greatly appreciated because this line is a dead-end for me. He was born in Sweden in 1845 but I don't know where or have his parents names yet. Thanks.

Thank you for all of the good information. We know so little about George's early years. We know he was born in London and I have sent for a long form copy of the birth certificate believed to be him. He was born in 1892 and I did find a George Manning immigrating in early 1906 (the same year he married my great grandmother). Again, I'm not sure it's him. He very well could have been an unwanted child as his marriage license lists his mother as unknown. I will search the sites you provided and I appreciate the help.

Yes, that is My great grandfather and grandmother. It was actually Louisa Ferns. They were married in Michigan, but were soon back in Canada (I believe George immigrated from England via Canada). Then 3 years later were back in Michigan. I can't find the border crossings for them, just for their first child.

On the film of George MANNING's death certificate, the informant is shown as Hamilton FERNO. I would expect that - since George's wife's surname was FERNO - this was a one of her relatives, although not likely her father, as his name was given as Matthew.

A search for Hamilton FERNO might give some more information.

HTH.

Nancy

On familysearch.org there is a copy of the marriage registration for George MANNING (born 1881 in England) and Louise FERNO (born 1888 in Michigan). It shows that they were married 02 Jul 1906 in Tawas City, Michigan.

It also shows George MANNING's mother ("Don't Know") and father (Thomas G MANNING). Additionally, it shows Louise FERNO's mother as June GOODE and father as Matthew FERNO.

This is a photocopy, not a transcription.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11858-36858-90?...

HTH.

Nancy
Hello,

I haven't mentioned the "British Home Children" in a while. But, because of the age of George MANNING, and he first went to Canada, I guessed he might have been a "home child." I just checked one of the BHC data bases, and I find this teen:

Surname: MANNINGGiven Name: GeorgeAge: 15Sex: MShip: CarthaginianYear of Arrival: 1892Departure Port: LiverpoolDeparture Date: 1892-03-17Arrival Port: HalifaxArrival Date: 1892-03-27Party: Barnardo HomesDestination: Toronto, Ontario and Winnipeg, ManitobaComments: 303 children with Mr. OwenNotes: The child's surname was illegible or difficult to decipherSource: Library and Archives CanadaReference: RG 76 C1bMicrofilm: C-4515Type of Record: Passenger Lists

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/0...

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/i...

The term, British Home Children, is what was used in Canada after the "over 100,000" unwanted children were shipped there from 1860's to 1940's. Back in the U.K. they were part of the UK's Child Migrant Scheme. And, that scheme took place more like 150 years, and more like 150,000 unwanted children, as thousands were sent to Australia, New Zealand, Africa, etc.

There are many web sites on-line about them. And, there is a BHC List and a BHC Board. www.rootsweb.com And, there is a "Child Migrants UK" List which is not very active.

This is one of the BHC web sites:

http://www.britishhomechildren.org/

The above George MANNING arrived in 1892 as a 15-yr-old, which puts his birth-year about 1877. And, it says he left Liverpool and went to Halifax but his destination was Ontario.

The above BHC data base is very searchable. I just checked and there were 66 children with the name, MANNING. And, if you check whether some of them also came over in the 1890's, there were a few, so possibly a sibling.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(Admin for List and Boards about CAN-USA-Migrantion)

(on Lists and Boards for 11 yrs.; now an Admin for 10 Lists and 5 Boards)

(My great-grandparents arrived in Halifax as teens in 1874 and 1875, also from Liverpool.

I am looking for info on a George Manning who immigrated from England to Canada possibly early in 1906. He then would have crossed the border into Michigan and went to Iosco County and married on July 2, 1906. George and his wife Louisa then were back in Canada (District of York, Ontario, Canada) by 11/11/1907 when their son Presley was born. Then in 1909 they were back in Iosco County, Michigan. I can find the border crossing info for Presley but not for George or for George and Louisa.

Did Mary Isabel Hayhoe pass through Canada?

I am trying to find out how my great grandmother got to the US from England. Census records indicate she came either 1885 or 1888. Her mother died in 1885 and her youngest son was born the same year. Census records indicate he was born in Canada/Eng. I wonder if they were traveling and perhaps his mother died in route? Her death is recorded in England. This is a real mystery and I'm afraid the immigration and border crossing records are not available. Mary's parents were George Perfect Hayhoe and Susannah Burdis Hayhoe. Mary had two brothers Joseph and Benjamin. Benjamin was born 1885. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you for your assistance. I think we are getting closer. Since my father was born in 1910, the Harry was too old. The listing for Albert is closer but may be a little old too maybe a Grandfather?
It is something o consider different spellings for Canahan.
another member found a Nora Cranham having a baby on my father's birthday, 5/06/1910 at the Ottawa Maternity Hospital with No father listed.
The only "facts" I have are from the information given at the orphanage by Mora/Nora . She also said she was married in Toledo to Albert in 1912.
She later found out he was already married. She said he died in 1911?
I think she was finding ways to justify leaving her 7 year old son.
The 1915 census from Buffalo does ring true with Albert from USA, head of household and 30 years old, Mora born in England was 24. And son,
Henry, was 5 years old and born in Canada.
Again, thank you so much for your work, it is much appreciated.

Hello,

I just looked at census pages for both the CANAHAN and FRANK surnames in that 1900 to 1920 timeframe, and am not having much luck. There were CANAHAN people in NY State, but in NYC and not in Erie County.

There is a lot more information at www.familysearch.org this year, so I checked there. I did find this listing which might be something for you to consider:

Name: Harry Franks
Titles & Terms:
Event: Census
Event Year: 1940
Event Place: Ward 11, Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls City, Niagara, New York, United States
Gender: Male
Age: 31
Marital Status: Single
Race (Original): White
Race (Standardized): White
Relationship to Head of Household (Original): Partner
Relationship to Head of Household (Standardized): Partner
Birthplace: Canada
Estimated Birth Year: 1909
Residence in 1935: Tonawanda, Erie, New York
Enumeration District Number: 32-101
Family Number: 132
Sheet Number and Letter: 61B
Line Number: 80
NARA Publication Number: T627
NARA Roll Number: 2697
Digital Folder Number: 005458669
Image Number: 00740
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Head Walter Elliott M 32 Canada
Partner Harry Franks M 31 Canada

.. I see this man as a possibility:

FRANK, ALBERT (1900 U.S. Census)
NEW YORK , ERIE, 25-WD BUFFALO
Age: 34, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA
Series: T623 Roll: 1032 Page: 39

.. That's all I can look up this morning.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Board Administrator

I am trying to find information about my father's parents. I have a border crossing card for him, Henry Albert Canahan, arriving from Canada at Buffalo, April 10, 1917. listed as arriving by Railroad but can't find his mother or parents with him. He was born 5/06/1910 in Ottawa, Canada.
I can find no border crossing for his mother, Mora Canahan was English.
Father was Albert Frank who was from somewhere in USA.
I did find a census listed from 1915 for the three of them living in Buffalo,
New York,Ward 14.
Mora was born 1891, Albert was born 1885. My father was deserted in an orphanage in Cleveland, Ohio in 1917 under father's last name Frank.
Any help would be very appreciated.

Objet : Rose Anna Audette Bureau

Hi stephpa10

It looks like I found a cousin here! I am the great-grandaughter of Roseanna Audette. She and her husband Daniel Bureau appear in the 1911 Canadian Census for the Nipissing District. They have her listed as Rosiana and born in 1874. She and Daniel Bureau had 6 children together: Antoinette who is my grandmother, Joseph, Irene, Edmond and twins by the names of Emile and Emilia.

Roseanna was the daughter of Jean Audette and Celanire Verette. They too appear in the 1911 cencus, with Jean being 60 years old at the time and Celanire aged 59 (they have her as Belamire). Celanire lived with my mother's family for a time while she was growing up. A cousin of mine had done some research a while back and found that Celanire was a full-blooded Cree aboriginal, however digging into her ancestry myself, I found her coming from the Ancienne Laurette area of Quebec (near Quebec city)along with her family members and ancestors, which is where the only reservation for the almost extincted Hurons exists today. (there were only about 300 Hurons left when the massacre of the Iroquois occurred in the 1600's. A picture of Celanire and Jean Audette exists whereby I was able to tell she is definitely aboriginal, but unfortunately I don't have a copy of it, however some of my family members or cousins do. In any event, Roseanna was definitely at least a half breed, but through research, I believe that there is aboriginal blood on the Audette side, as well as the fact that most of them had darker coloured skin than what we had. My oldest sister also married an Audette that came from Jean Audette's line. The Audette families originated were from Quebec - the first being Nicolas Audet dit Lapointe on Ile d'Orleans who married one of the King's Daughters Madeleine Despres on Sept 15, 1670. I come from their son Innocent Audet dit Lapointe and Genevieve Lemelin. Jean Audette and Celanire did so move to Fall Rivers, MA but I don't know what year. There were many Quebecers leaving Quebec in the mid-part of the 1800s - looking for work. My grandmother Antoinette was born American, so likely was in the area of Fall Rivers. She was born Nov. 03, 1894 (some have said 1898) but I can confirm the year with someone who would know if you need it.
From what I was able to learn, the Audette family returned to Canada before 1905, and you are correct that they settled in the Lavigne area. They likely returned to Canada by train, as it was beginning to be popular by then, and it is quite a distance from Fall River to Lavigne! Actually my mother said they she lived in a tiny place called Bagton in the Lavigne area. According to my mother, there were four children in the Audette family: Eugene (who married my father's aunt), Roseanna, Arsene and she thinks the name of the 4th was Sara. I didn't know that Roseanna had remarried. From the stories I've been told, Daniel Bureau apparently did not treat Roseanna very good, so I hope that in the end, she found a good man to be with in Calice Duschene.

In the 1911 census, I also found an Arsene Audette who was age 33 at the time, and had a spouse listed as Rose Alma who was born in May 1879 (age 32)

None of the Audette family appear in the 1901 census. It's been a while since I've researched anything on them but I do believe that Roseanna, Celanire, Jean, Eugene are all in the Lavigne cemetary.

How is Antoinette Bureau your grandmother's mother? Your grandmother must either be my first cousin or you are my niece/nephew. Let me know if there's anything else you need and I'll see if I can help.

Hi Betty, Yes they're in the 1881 Census for Ottawa twice. Once temporarily in an orphanage, and again a few months later when they were sent home to the father.

Their father is William Cooper and the mother is Emma Morley (died in 1881). One census say they were all born in Ontario and another says the US.

I have been online searching for years trying to find the birth records in either Ontario and the US. but have failed to discover any.
Peace and love,
Bill
Orphanages and "Homes" in Canada

Hello,

While doing a look-up this morning, I discovered a web site which mentions that some orphanages or "homes" were a type of day-care facility. For example around 1880/1881, if a woman found the need to go out to work, she could sometimes find an orphanage where her young children could be placed for the day - for a small fee.

http://urbsite.blogspot.com/2011/07/friendless-orphaned-incu...

On my husband's family-tree, his maternal grandmother, born Annie Mary Magdalene McLAUGHLIN, in London, England, was in an orphanage. She and her sisters had lost their father when they were school-age, and their mother could not care for them at that time. So, they were placed in the care of "Nuns" for a few yrs. As soon as their mother remarried, she went to get her daughters and bring them home with her.

Annie seems to have come over to Massachusetts as a 19 or 20 yr. old, and married here. I don't remember whether I found out what happened to her sisters. Also, her grandchildren had always assumed she was Irish. But, we don't even know whether Annie's father was Irish or Scotch.

Just an FYI for you.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Board Administrator

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and now 4 Boards. For that surname, I'm interested in my husband's paternal grandparents with ties to the .
Samuel George Meredith was born in 1870 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England i have found him on the census of the 1901 but nothing on 1911 which is why i thought he may have gone to Canada. He died in 1947 in Portsmouth. His wife was Martha Ann Meredith (madian name Drake) born in 1878 in Yorkshire England. She died in 1941. They both lived on Hayling Island in Hampshire, England and owned Whitehaven Nursery.

You might be correct. On Ancestry.com, under Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 there is a Record for Samuel George Meredith, age 31. The entry is listed under a St. Albans Vermont 1910 manifest but the form is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. It seems that Samuel is leaving Manitoba to go back to England via Vermont and Boston. Samuel is a farmer. His last address in Canada was Invermay, Saskatchewan. For nearest relative's name & address he put: Bro., Wm H.
The Can. government was giving away land at this time in the west to anyone who wanted to settle there and there is an online searchable database of grants at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca
and found that Samuel George Meredith obtained land and provided all the property numbers but not where it was.
At www.saskhomesteads.com I found him again & right beside him is his brother, William Henry.
File Number Name Part Section Township Range Meridian Subdivision Remarks
1335617 Meredith, Samuel George NW 34 35 9 W2
1292943 Meredith, William Henry NE 34 35 9 W2.
Invermay is NW of Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
I doubt if this is the same person but in May 1919 Samuel G. Meredith, 40, accountant, and Martha A., 44, his wife (both of Nanaimo, BC went to England where his relative was his mother, Mrs. Meredith of Havant, Eng. They arrived in Liverpool on the Mauretania on May 19 and she is now 40!
I couldn't figure out why I could not find their entry into Canada so tried again and found in 1907 George Meredith, 28, farmer, landing in NY City bound for Winnipeg. But he is Irish. I also located a return to Canada of farmer Meredith in July 1910. I never did find the inital entry into Canada of Accountant Meredith and his wife. Since his mother lived in Hampshire, I would assume this is the Meredith you are looking for.

I am looking into the lost story of the Pardo family...

My grandmother Mary Pardo was 100% Spanish and the story of our family has been lost to time..

My daughter was able to pick up the Washington phone book about 10 years ago and called every Pardo and was pleasantly surprised I was related to all of them, I was put in touch with Benjamin Pardo who lived outside of Everett Wa and he did tell me that their was a family feud and that half the family moved to Washington and the other half stayed in Michigan, I could have swore they migrated through Cuba or Canada.

Any information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated....

Hi Betty
First of all can I say thankyou so much for taking time to help.
I'll explain the problem in detail. I live in Yorkshire in England and have behind researching my friend's family. Her grandfather was called Josef Heido. Josef was living in Devon, England when he married a local Devon girl called Harriet Hutchings. We know very little about Josef except what is on the marriage certificate.
They married in England on 13th July 1918 , Josef was aged 22, his father was Stephen Heido who was an engineer. I have made lots of enquiries but they have all drawn blanks. I have no clues about the nationality of Josef or his father Stephen.
Regards
Alvin

Hi Alivin,

I can loook up US census records. This seems to be the man you are interested in:

HEIDO, STEVE (1910 U.S. Census)
PENNSYLVANIA , LUZERNE, HAZLE TWP
Age: 38, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: HUNG
Series: T624 Roll: 1367 Page: 83

His wife, Mary, is 27, and they had been married for 9 yrs. She was born in Hungary (?), also. I think the handwriting says: Hung. Mayyork (?). I think it says she had 7 children and only 3 live that year. He immigrated in 1897, and was naturalized, and he was a coal miner and spoke English. I think Mary immigrated in 1900 and she spoke Hungarian. They had 3 young children, all born in PA: Elizabeth, 5, Annie, 2, and Joseph, 2 1/2 months.

Looks like everyone on that census page came from Hungary.

Do you need the 1920 census?

I can't look up passenger lists, etc. But there is a great deal of new information available at
www.familysearch.org

Just an FYI:

HIDO, GEORGE (1920 U.S. Census)
PENNSYLVANIA , LUZERNE, PLAINS
Age: 25, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: EURO
Series: T625 Roll: 1595 Page: 157

And, a quick look at the above web site and I see there was another Steve HEIDO in Ohio in 1910, but he was born in Austria.

I see there are other possible spellings for that surname.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

List and Board Administrator for CAN-USA-Migration

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists)

Can anyone with access to USA records please help. I live in England and I'm trying to help a friend finding out about her grandfather. On the US 1910 Census there is a Steve Heido born in 1872 living in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. On the Hamburg to New York passenger lists 1850-1934 there is a Josef Heido. In the US Public Records Index volume 2 there is a reference to Steve J Heido. I would appreciate anyone who can supply details of these three lookups. Sincerest thanks in advance.
Alvin Hickling

Hello,

I can't answer your question. But, since the arrival was in August 1855, I wonder if the ship was supposed to pull into Boston, MA. But, because of bad weather, for example, it went north to New Brunswick.

It is mentioned on the "British Home Children" List that some of the ships bringing over the 100,000 needy children had to go to a different port than they intended. Hurricanes, bad storms, illness, etc., could have prevented an arrival. And, it could have been in reverse. Some ships were supposed to go to Quebec or Nova Scotia and had to pull into Portland, Maine, for example.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Board Administrator

P.S. And, you didn't mention the man's name.
