Hello,

I am looking for any information on Donald Sutherland who moved from Golspie, Scotland to Canada. He was born in 1822, son of James Sutherland and Catherine McKenzie, Brother of Margaret, George, Andrew, Janet and Catherine.
    Fiona,
Agnes Provan Shanks had her passage to Canada in 1923 paid for by the Salvation Army, and she seemed to be going to work as a Domestic with them in Toronto.

...Isabella was 20 when she made her voyage in 1926, and she seemed to have with her someone named Jean Watt [aged 18]. They had both come from the same address: 14 St Vincent Place, Glasgow, which I think would be a place of work rather than their home address. ...Isabella had come from Airdrie,[as you know] and Jean Watt's home address was 13 Loanhead Cres, Newarthill. They were both going to "Govt Hotel, Toronto." Both were domestics.

I couldn't find a marriage for either Isabella or Agnes. Maybe someone would tell you the best site for looking up marriages in Canada after 1923.

About Agnes... I was wondering if she was only working for the Salvation Army or if she was actually a Salvation Army Officer. The Salvation Army keep good records in London for anyone who was an officer with them, and helped me to find someone on my own tree who was missing for many years. ....It turned out she had been with the Salvation Army for over 30 years!

Brian

I haven't tried searching anyone this way but - I read just a couple of months ago that the postmaster in all the small towns in Scotland had a list of every person in town as of January 1st each year. I can't remember if that included children or not. Even if he was an adult when he migrated his parents were probably with him. If you know their names maybe you could look them up.

Unfortunately, I can't find the instructions on just how to go about researching via these postmasters' records.  I'm pretty sure I have it saved in some info file somewhere.  {sigh}

I'm trying to find some info on my Gt Grand Aunt - Isabella Gardner Shanks b. 10/10/1905 at 196 Forrest Street, Airdrie, New Monkland, Scotland - Parents Thomas Shanks and Isabella Gardner. I found that she emigrated to Quebec, Canada on 14/08/1926 onboard "Letitia". My dad can vaguely remember that his aunt possibly married someone by the name of Nichol/Nichols/Nicholson, but I'm unsure of how to find this out or if this was her sister Agnes Provan Shanks b. 1896 in Airdrie as she also emigrated to Quebec, Canada on 14/08/1923 onboard "Marloch". Any help on both sisters would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Fiona

I'm on a quest to figure out the family relationships between the Lady Cathcart Settlers. It's a long & winding road & I'm only part way through the 1883 group.

I have a daily journal of the 1883 trip from the Outer Hebrides, the 1922 "A Short History of the Pioneer Scotch Settlers of St. Andrews, Sask" by James N. MacKinnon (mentioned earlier in this thread), the 1983 History of St.Andrews & St. Paul's (which follows a similar format as the 1922 book but with more info on what happened to the families in Canada), etc.

Of course, Angus, who responded earlier in this thread is the real expert on this group of people before they came to Canada & the first generation after that. I'm pleased to help & share as best I can too.

Cheers, Jan

It looks although he was living in Halifax and was a janitor. James had a middle name of Dryden
I also forgot that there was another brother who also went out to Canada.
John Watson Coutts born August 1897 in Angus. Sailed on vessel Cassandra in 1920 with his brothers George and David they evenutally returned to Scotland but John stayed.
Sandra
I don't think that last Elizabeth Coutts is her, so I wouldn't waste time on it. ....I had a look at the Canadian census though, and I may or may not have stumbled upon some information.

1916 census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan & Alberta.
Robert Coutts, aged 30, born Scotland. Married to Margaret Coutts with a newly born son, Daniel. Living at 15, MacKenzie, Saskatchewan. Address: 35,30,W7, Livingston. (Probably married only a year or two)

Also 1916, same area...James Coutts, aged 25, born 1891 Scotland. Living at 09, Last Mountain, Saskatchewan.
Address: 24,2,W3, Huron 223. ....He is the brother of the head of the house, who is William Coutts, aged 34 who is married to Elizabeth Coutts aged 30. William & Elizabeth have a child William, aged 1. This place is just north of the South Saskatchewan River.

Finally, there is a 1911 census of Canada, with an Elizabeth Coutes on it. The original has some very poor writing on it, and when I looked, I thought it looked more like COUTTS than Coutes as transcribed. She is 23, born Mar 1888 Scotland, and had immigrated 1911. She is living at the Province of Saskatchewan, District of Saskatoon. District number 216, Sub-district Broadrick and Glenside Villages. She is a lodger with a George and Mary Black, and a James Cratty.

Does any of the above information ring true?

Brian, Glasgow, Scotland.

Regarding Elizabeth Coutts, there was someone of that name departed Liverpool on 26 Aug 1909 on the TUNISIAN, heading for Montreal. With her was her husband Frederick Coutts, and a daughter Ethel. No age for the daughter. It simply says "Child".

Brian

Rachel,
If someone was living in poverty in Glasgow in the 1920's, they would most likely be living in a tenement.
....I am not so sure about whether or not it would be a tenement in Bellshill though, and I can see that this would make a big difference to your story.

Try a google for "Old Photos of Bellshill, 1920's" and see if anything comes up.

There is a census for 1911, and a Nellie Gentles aged 5 is living at Bothwell district, which would take in Bellshill. .......John Gentles, her father is a Blacksmith at a Colliery, and his wife is Maggie. There are EIGHT children in the house, including Nellie. And it says that John Gentles & Maggie have been married 25 years, have had eleven children, of which 10 are still living.
Perhaps there were others put into care...? The address Nellie appears to be living at in 1911 is Ashley Gr....? [difficult to read it].

Brian
P.S. There is a site which is local to the area called The Lanarkshire Family History Society.
P.P.S. The address of the Salvation Army Headquarters in London is: The Salvation Army International Heritage Centre, House 14 William Booth College, Champion Park, London SE5 8BQ. ...If you are trying to contact them by email, then the google to use to explore their site is: House 14 William Booth College, London.
Thank you so much Brian,
Yes, that is my great grandfather Adam Scott.
I don't know how she would have got to Perth, from my understanding she continued housekeeping to earn money.
Adam was a sheep dealer and therefore used to travel/roam - I can only assume she met him at a market or something like that - again I really don't know anything about a sheep dealers life, only that he was away for long periods of time and I believe the Scotts were shepherds.
I did contact the Salvation Army in Canada and you have to pay a fee to do a search - so perhaps I will do that in the New Year, it would be nice to see if they have any records of her placements. And then again in Scotland, where she went to when she returned home - I know she didn't return to her family in Bellshill.
Do you know any good information sources for Scottish households so I can get an idea of what a humble home would be like. I need to portray my grandmother as a small child living at home, no food, no heat and being left on her own with her siblings for long periods of time.
I grew up in England in a typical counsel house - kitchen, dining room, lounge, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs.
I wonder what the typical house would be for someone on a relatively low income. Would it be a 2up 2down?
I'll probably visit my grandmother in Fort William in the Autumn next year and do some research when I'm there.
Thank you so much for all your help.
Rachel

Hi,
Nellie Gentles arrived Glasgow on the METAGAMA on 22nd July 1925. She had come from Quebec, and her age is down as 22. With her was an infant named Gwendoline, aged 7 months. The address they were going to was:
Staff Captain Spicer, 102 Hope St, Glasgow. The page is headed DEPORTS.
..........................................................
She had left Glasgow for Montreal on 5th Oct 1923.
The ship was the "MARLOCH" and her last known address in Scotland is given as Sykeshead Place, Bellshill [which is
in Lanarkshire, east of Glasgow]. She was said to be 18, and a Domestic.
...........................................................
....I noticed the marriage of a Nellie Goodwin Gentles to an Adam Scott at Perth in 1926 ... I don't suppose it is her though, because Perth is a long way north of Glasgow.
............................................................
The Salvation Army was very active in Scotland at the time, and I had a relative who went missing around 1900 - and I discovered that she had joined the Salvation Army and was at their training headquarters in London on the 1901 census.

I wrote to them about her, and they had first class records of her. I suggest that you try emailing or writing to them, asking about this Captain Spicer, who he was and giving the information about Nellie being sent to
Canada etc.

Brian
P.S. I assumed that the hotel at 102 Hope St was the Central hotel, right next to Central Station, but can't be certain where number 102 is in Hope St. The hotel is still there, recently refurbished. Try a google for it if you want to get an idea of it. It is right in the centre of Glasgow - but keep in mind that there may have been some other hotel in Hope Street in the twenties that I don't know about.

Yep, that's her.
Shameful I know.
I'm writing a book about her life - and trying to do the research so I can get the important bits right.
I'm trying to work out where she went in Ontario - what kind of home was she work in? A farm or a city home. And then when she returned to Scotland, why was she being sent into the care of a Captain? Was she still using the Salvation Army for help? I'm also taking the liberty of assuming that she immigrated with the Salvation Army on the Domestic Servant scheme which would be why she would return to them and assuming that 102 Hope Street was a women's hostel/shelter of some kind.
The history is, she married an older man once she returned to Scotland, poor guy, had 2 more children with him, another child although we don't believe it was his and then was neglecting her children so they were taken away from her and put into a home so we don't know a lot about her early history because my grandmother grew up in a home - so the only way I can find out these facts is by trying to research them myself and I grew up in England so don't know a lot about the history of the time or the area of Glasgow.
If you have any tidbits you can throw my way I would really appreciate it.
Thank you so much for replying.

all the best
Rachel
Hi,
Was her name Nellie Gentles? Someone of this name, aged 22, was deported from Canada with a baby aged 7 months in 1925. Her destination was 102 Hope St, Glasgow - and I know for a fact that the Grand Central Hotel stands at the corner of Gordon Street and Hope St. She was being sent into the care of Staff Captain Spicer. She was a Domestic servant.

It isn't her, is it?

Brian, Glasgow.

I'm trying to learn researching for Canadian ancestors.

Are there sites on-line to track immigration to Canada from Scotland or England?

I've used the Ellis Island sites for USA.

Thank you.
Virginia Crilley
No luck. My laptop doesn't send the ships passenger list because it uses too many megabytes due to the colour on the page. I tried converting it to black and white, but that didn't work either. ...If you can try a google for Ships passenger lists, UK to Canada, 1890 to 1960,
there might be a few options open to you. Problem is there is usually a charge. Sorry I couldn't get it to you....
Brian

Hi,
Descriptions of the two OTTAWA ships are on The Ships List. I was trying to point out that neither of these two were operating as the Ottawa in 1898. One sunk, the other changed its name. The LAKE ONTARIO is on Find My Past site. I am attaching a print-out version here,
and will follow up with the original. Reason for this is that I think the original is so faint that you will be unable to read it,
Brian
