Lady Cathcart Settlers Scotland->Canada 1882 & 1884
Could someone please give me both a history and a geography lesson. I'm looking for information regarding the region in Scotland that immigrants to Canada know as the Lady Cathcart Settlers originated from. There were two waves one in 1882 and another in 1884 that settled in the Canadian Northwest Territories (now Eastern Saskatchewan - Wapella/Moosimin region) Who would/could have been referred to as Lady Cathcart in 1882? And where did she live? Canadian history records her as being a very fore thinking person.
Looking for information on settlers named Effie Campbell (b abt 1874) and Angus McPhee (b 1 Jul 1875, Scotland) or any Campbell/McPhee settlers who may have been their parents.
I believe they had a child Jessie Agnes McPhee b 2 Jan 1894 Wapella, Sask, Canada
Angus McPhee was a blacksmith in Wapella, Sask, Canada 1901
thanks cj

Re: Lady Cathcart Settlers Scotland->Canada 1882 & 1884
Forgive me for the slight correction but the two main movements were in 1883 and 1884. The migrants were from Benbecula and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. There was just one 1882 'prospector' on behalf of Lady Gordon Cathcart, who owned both the islands, and that was Donald MacDiarmid of Aird, who was the proprietor's agent in the matter.
There were at least three MacPhee families. I remember one case of a John MacPhee from Iochdar, S Uist married to an Effie Campbell but they were rather older than the two folks you are looking for.
If you care to e-mail me, I will let you have details of the two who would have been children at the time of the move. I also have a description of the progress of each of the families in their new home and I will happily copy you anything of relevance from that if you would be interested.

Re: Lady Cathcart Settlers Scotland->Canada 1882 & 1884
As your note hints, there was more than one Lady Cathcart. I suspect you are not looking for the one who, in succession to Gordon of Cluny, held South Uist from about 1878 to 1932. There was an earlier one in the mid-18th century who introduced a lady Erskine to the painter David Allen of Alloa so that line might be a good place to start.
Good hunting

I don't know much about who Lady Cathcart was but my great-great grandparents were part of the Cathcart settlers at Wapella. Their names were John and Margaret Ferguson and they came from the Isle of Barra which is in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland.

Hi there; My husband's ancestors were part of this group. James McKinnon, of Wapella, has written a small, unpublised history of this time. St. Andrew's church, which is outside Wapella, was constructed by these settlers. This church still stands in it's original state on the grounds.

Re: Lady Cathcart Settlers Scotland->Canada 1882 & 1884
I'm on a quest to figure out the family relationships between the Lady Cathcart Settlers. It's a long & winding road & I'm only part way through the 1883 group.
I have a daily journal of the 1883 trip from the Outer Hebrides, the 1922 "A Short History of the Pioneer Scotch Settlers of St. Andrews, Sask" by James N. MacKinnon (mentioned earlier in this thread), the 1983 History of St.Andrews & St. Paul's (which follows a similar format as the 1922 book but with more info on what happened to the families in Canada), etc.
Of course, Angus, who responded earlier in this thread is the real expert on this group of people before they came to Canada & the first generation after that. I'm pleased to help & share as best I can too.
Cheers, Jan
