I have information on quite a few Irish in the Bathurst area. The records of them start in the mid 1820s, but I have been unable to come up with anything on how they got there. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to locate information on emmigration to the Bathurst Gloucester Co (was Northumberland Co.)New Brunswick Canada area in the 1820s?
Surnames that I see are Bradbury, Butler,Clark, Clifford, Dempsey, Dois, Dougherty, Eagan, Haggerty, McCarthy, Murphy, Reagan, Redmond, Ryan, Roche, Savage, Sheehan, Sullivan

Wayne, I have been doing some research on the Ryan family who migrated to New Brunswick Canada in the early 1800's. I had gotten quite a bit of info from St. Michaels Museum mmuseum@nbnet.nb.ca
Joseph Ryan married Catherine McInness
Children- Thomas b-1821
Andrew b-1826 (my great grandfather)
John b-1828
Ann b-1831
All were born in canada
Andrew Ryan married Mary O'donnell( b-1833) in 1855
Children- James b-approx 1857
Ellen b-1858
John F b-approx 1862
Mary b-1865
Andrew J b-1868
William A b-1872
Gertrude K b-1875 ( my grandmother)
Andrew and Mary migrated to Oshkosh WI in 1882 with 5 of their children. I think James and John stayed in Canada.

I'm researching Dempsey's who emigrated to Canada and then moved to Baltimore in the US. In particular I'm looking for a William Dempsey who married Catherine Cummins (both born about 1826 in Ireland). They can be found in Baltimore by 1860 census. Their two oldest children listed in that census, Patrick and Thomas were born in Canada in 1851 and 1854. William worked as a black smith in america. Do you have any data that could fit this william dempsey?

Thanks for the quick reply. Is Bartabog in New Brunswick? My William Dempsey was born in Ireland. The 1819 date seems a bit early and since none of his 10 children were named either Maurice of Bridget, I have a feeling that we are dealing with different people.

Yes! Bartibog is just south of Bathurst, just north of Miramichi in the northern part of New Brunswick. I have more Demosey's also if you want to check out my site at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/c/c/Wayne-F-Mcc...

Thanks for the website. I've bookmarked for future use! Although I haven't been able to make the connection, I have a feeling that these Dempsey's are related to mine. The problem is that I believe that my William Dempsey emigrated from Ireland to Canada between 1840 and 1850, but only stayed a short while before moving to Baltimore. However, I do know that his first two sons, Patrick and Thomas, were born in Canada between 1850 and 1855 and I also know that his wife was named Catherine Cummins. I've also seen several Cummins families located in New Brusnwick. I think my best bet is to get a look at the 1851 census records because it should show William, Catherine, and possibly a son named Patrick. Do you know how I can access those records from the US?

You can obtain the microfilm of the census records for the area that they were in through the Later Day Saints Family History Center. You can also obtain church records, county records etc. through them. I have most of the records for the Bathurst area 1800 - 1870 reserved at my local center if you think that they were in that area, I could try to get in and look them up for you.

OOPS! I'm sorry! Totally forgot. The 1851 census is missing. You will need to find church records, or something! Hopefully at least one of the children were baptised there!

Thanks for the information. I am not certain where they were, so I don't want to trouble you to examine the records you have. But it sounds like I ought to try and make a trip to the local latter day saints library and see what they might have and see if I can pin them down. Problem is that they may not have been there very long before moving to Baltimore. However, two children were born there so maybe baptismal records will be the way to go. But that's a lot of churches to sift through!
