I am trying to find the passenger list with my grandmother Mary Ann Grimshaw. Born July 4 1886, Salford England.

In the 1911 Canada Census, she lists 1904 as her year of immigration, but I can't find any record of her crossing.

I know that her mother(Elizabeth Alice) and two sisters (Lucy and Martha)came to Canada in 1903 and her older brother Emmanuel Knott Grimshaw in 1906.

Any help finding this record would be great.

The Seattle Daily Times
Monday Evening, January 21, 1907
Page 5, Column 3
Noted Man’s Son Dies In Seattle
Charles B. Mackay, Son of Famous Literateur, Dies at the Home of His Son, J.R. Mackay of This City
Was Brother to the Distinguished Author George Eric Mackay and of Marie Corelli
Charles B. Mackay, eldest and only surviving son of the famous British author, Dr. Charles Mackay and brother of the distinguished George Eric Mackay and of whom Marie Corelli was an adopted sister, died at the residence of his son, J.R. Mackay, at 1212 East Pine Street yesterday morning at the age of 73 years.

Mackay was born in London September 20, 1833 and at the age of 21 came to America and settled in Toronto where he married. In 1883 he moved to Chicago where he lived until coming to Seattle about three months ago. While young, Dr. Mackay, father of the Seattle man, began writing for Belgian newspapers and also while a young man sent poems to English newspapers. A volume of “Songs and Poems” followed and then returning to England, Dr. Mackay became a contributor to The Sun, assistant sub-editor of The Morning Chronicle and editor of The Glasgow Argus. Among the songs written by Dr. Mackay are “Cheer, Boys, Cheer;” “There’s a Land, a Dear Land” and many others which are being sung in the schools today.

No less distinguished was the brother of Charles B. Mackay, George Eric Mackay, whose work, “The Love Letters of a Violinist,” created such a sensation in the literary world a few years ago.

Mackay is survived by eight children. Three reside in Seattle, three in Chicago and two in Alaska. The body is to be shipped to Chicago for interment.

Im not sure if anyone can help me but im trying to trace any information about Stanley Thomas Hearn born in Gillingham, Kent, England on 22nd July 1912, he had a twin sister born the day before. They were seperated when their mother gave them away after remarrying (supposidly). His sister was told he died at sea in the navy from drowning but they believe he moved to Canada. I have found 2 records of Stanley Hearn's travelling to Canada, the one i believe is nearest to our Stanley is a man who left from Southampton to Montreal in April 1938, he had been a farmer here and was going to live in Canada.

If anyone has any information on Stanley we would love to hear from you.

Regards

Emma

How to find out when my grandfather changed his name

Hi there. I am looking to find out when my grandfather legally changed his birth name to his name that I knew him as. I know that his birth name was Dirk de Kok, born in Goes, Zeeland, Netherlands on March 13, 1907. His parents were Hendrick de Kok and Janna Pieternella Boogert. I know that when he came to Canada, his passport read Dirk de Kok, the ship manifest from the Library and Archives Canada has him listed as Dirk de Kok, arriving on the Albertic White Star on May 18, 1930 in Quebec, QC. When he and my grandmother married (Edith Joan Flannery) on June 9, 1938, his name was Richard Cook.

How do I begin trying to find out when he legally changed his name? Unfortunately, there is no one left alive in my family that would be able to answer this question for me and all documents are long since gone.

I would appreciate any help anyone could give.

Thank you.

Thank you for this information. How did you find out the dates for SS Corinthian trips? My grandmother settled in Montreal, married there in 1913, was widowed in 1915/16, married again and in 1923 immigrated to US. Lived first in Trenton,NJ, I believe, and then Lodi, NJ where she died in 1977. I have information on all these facts, except marriage to her second husband.

Are you talking about US census? If so, she would not be on this census because she didn't migrate to US until 1923 and she starts appearing in the 1930 US Census. I will check the 1916 census though.

Yes, thank you so much. This is my Alfred and Ann McGrath. I have been searching for a while. I will have to, as you said, try different spellings of the surname. I will search the USA too. Again Robert, thank you so much.

Perhaps this is your Alfred and Ann? As you can see Ancestry has mistranscribed the surname as McGrach, but looking at the manifest it is clearly MCGRATH He was traveling with Ann MCGRATH age 63

Name:	A McGrach
Gender:	Male
Age:	34
Estimated Birth Year:	abt 1874
Date of Arrival:	24 Jul 1908
Vessel:	Virginian
Port of Arrival:	Quebec
Port of Departure:	Liverpool, England
Roll:	T-4759

Sometimes it is better to search by partial name, due to mistransribed databases.

Also you may want to search US arrivals as some immigrants to Canada arrived at US ports

Robert Jerin
Croatian Heritage Museum
Cleveland Ohio

I have been trying to find my ancestors who have immigrated to Canada. I have found them on the 1911 Canadian Census where it said they immigrated in 1908. They all were on the 1901 England Census. They have to have immigrated between 1901 and 1911. I have checked all immigration records and can't find them. Any other ideas on where and how to check for them.
Their names are: Ann Sutherland McGrath born 1846 Sutherland Scotland; Alfred McGrath Born 1874 Glasgow, Scotland; Annie Cowan McGrath Bell born 1869 London, England; Edward Charles Bell born 1857 England. Thank you, Susan

My Great Uncle William was born in the north of England to Adam and Margaret Taylor, he had one brother. 1906 the brothers were orphaned, William's Brother Robert married my Grandmother, in 1919. My Mother once told me that William left England for Canada she thought. I have tried many leads, but getting no where.

I am not aware of a middle name for William, I think from what my Mother told me is that he came to Canada, before his brother was married to my Grandmother Lily Savage (hart). I think he was in the British Navy before he left England. After they were orphaned, aunts and uncles took care of them... I can find them both on 1911 Census under 2 different families....

immigration into canada

So when an immigrated landed by boat in canada what happened? Did they apply for naturalization when the reached port? Or did they have to be in the country for a specific amount of time first? Did they even have to apply for naturalization at all once in Canada? If they married a Canadian did that grant them citizenship?
Thanks
Suzanne

Thanks for the response! Both of those you've listed are my Jankel. He and his family travelled from Hamburg to Hull and then caught a train to Liverpool and boarded the Lake Winnipeg to Canada. He was born in Russia around 1865-66. I have both of these but can't find record of their entrance into Canada. His wife is Briene and would later be called Bertha. His daughter is Dobre and would later be called Dora. The others are relatives he was chaperoning. Thanks again.
