Hello Lea,

Oh my god, I just came across your 2005 posts looking for info on Edmond Louis Joseph Ethier. I have a little bit of info, and some old photos. Mr. Ethier married my great-grandmother, Olive May Jennings (from the UK) in 1914. Before I write more here, I don't even know if you are still checking this site. If you are, please do get in touch with me! I have done a fair bit of family research on both sides of my parents and would love to fill in some blanks about what happened to all the Ethiers!

I now live in Toronto, Ontario, and last I heard the Ethiers moved back to Quebec. Please email me directly at mvrowley [at] yahoo.com

Best,
Martina Rowley

History of the Cajuns by Alex Loya

I would like to buy a copy of this book but the "buy" link on his website doesn't work. Can anyone put me in touch with him.

I am a Loya by birth and just discovered that Antonio (Antoine) Loya was born in Acadia, New France, that is Nova Scotia, Canada. He died in San Elizario, Texas. My grandfather told me that his people came from San Elizario and many of my family members whom I have researched are from San Eli, Socorro, or Ysleta Texas, including myself.

Alex Loya's book links Acadia, New France with San Elizario. Very exciting. I want to know more. I always thought that my branch of Loyas, though Basque, came through Spain to San Elizario. But they were right on the border of France. Why not take that route. I can hardly wait to learn more. I just moved to New Iberia, LA and plan to research here.

Please Alex, if you read this tell me how I can get your book.

Eleanor

One of the difficulties is that the records in old Quebec are not very good. A lot are missing, and there wasn't much government recording at the time. This became pretty clear to me when I started researching in 1600's France, and found the records so much nicer (well, they're still kind of a nightmare in their own right). But relatively quite a bit more complete. For the life of me, I can't remember where I got the record info about your questioned connection below. I'll keep looking though.

Hi again, Genealogy is certainly a long and slow process! I downloaded the digital copy of the marriage certificate of Jacques Chalou (as it is spelled on the certificate)and Marie Marguerite Larue, in St-Ours, on March 31, 1761. The certificate states that both spouses belong to the St-Ours Parish but does not mention the names of their parents as in most marriage certificates. Thérèse Leclaire is named as witness and mother of the bride. The 3 other witnesses are François Lusignan, father and son, and Cautraine (not sure of spelling) Benoist. Althouh our family's Chalou genealogy by Joseph Drouin gives Pierre Chaloux and Marie Boisdoré as Jacques Chalou's parents, Jean-Marie Chaloux s.s.s, a cousin of my mother who further the genealogical research inthe 60's, said in a letter thatJacques Chalou's parents were actually Jacques Chaloux and Félicité Berthiaume. It does seem more likely as I have yet found no record of a a son Jacques born to Pierre Chaloux and Marie Boisdoré whose family seemed to have remained in Quebec City.

There is a Pierre Jacques Chaliou born on February 19, 1737, in Ste-Anne-de-la-Pérade, to Jacques Chaliou and Félicité Berthiaume.

So t this point I am working with this ascendance.

Hi Helene, I know I am extremely slow at such replies. But unfortunately, life is very busy these days. I do have in my database that Jacques Chaloux (Challeau) was married to Marie Marguerite Larue-Desplaines. I don't have a reference listed. I have marriage date of March 31, 1761, date of birth for Jacques as Feb 20, 1736/37; and place of marriage of St-Ours, Richelieu, QC, Canada. I'm not sure if this is enough confirmation for you or not. I'd have to do some more looking to figure out where the data came from. A lot of the Canadian data has been from other people's databases. My main original research has been in putting together the details about the older history in France.

Hello,
I found a few bits of information on your Houle relatives.
The information contained in that 1880 census was quite helpful.
Julie Houle was née Julie Rivard, daughter of François Rivard and Rosalie Fortier. She married Théophile Houle, son of Joseph Houle and Marie Anne Senneville, on 7 Jan 1835 at the parish of St-Frederic, in Drummondville, Quebec, Canada. They were the parents of at least 12 children, all born in Drummondville. The son listed as Elzin (Elzear) on this 1880 census is most likely the one baptized as Lazare Houle on 3 Jun 1838, having been born on 2 Jun 1838.
As can be seen from the census, the three oldest of Elzin's children were born in Canada, and the 3 youngest in Maine.
Elzear Houle's first marriage was to Emelie Hamel on 24 Jun 1862 at St-Hippolyte, Wotton, Richmond County, Quebec. She was the mother of the three eldest children.Emelie Hamel, wife of Elzear Houle, died 28 Jul 1870 and was buried 30 July 1870 at the cemetery of St-Hippolyte, Wotton, Richmond County, QC. On May 25, 1872, Elzear Houle married Sophie Rioux in Biddeford, Maine. Sophie Rious was the daughter of Leonard Rioux and Perpetua Labbé.

I have spent many hours in the parish records of St. Andre in Mirebeau. I have saved copies of images of the baptism records of what I believe are all of the children of Jacques Challeau and Gabrielle Boutin. I did scrutinize those letters in her family name. And although they did not consistently cross the T in BOUTIN, it is quite clearly the name. I can see when viewing a single record such as that, it does somewhat resemble an S. In that particular image (which I just now reviewed prior to writing this), I believe the horizontal line extending from the center right of the letter in question (S or T), and extending to the top of the I (next letter), may be a lazy or fast writing be the author. I looked through various other of their children's baptismal records, and some of them had clearly crossed T's. The husband was always JACQUES CHALLEAU BOULANGER (the "BOULANGER" referring to his occupation as a baker/breadmaker). This was very consistent across all of the records. I also found her parents, and the father was listed as BOUTIN as well.

One technique I employ is sort of statistics. I search for occurrences of the family name as confirmation. As I was looking for the illedged BONIVET/BANIVET/etc., I found that there was no one else with that family name, leading me to suspect perhaps there was a misinterpretation of the spelling. When I found the 1695 baptismal record of Jacques, that was the first hint. Then as I found there many other children, and the name was consistently spelled BOUTIN, that clinched it for me. Bother names were wrong in the Canadian records for what ever reason (or at least modern genealogists had interpreted them incorrectly).

I am still focusing on the 1600s and 1500s. I may have some rhetorical evidence of earlier origins of ancient royalty in the Challeau family at Chateau Challeau (near Fontainebleu castle). Still working on that. AND... my wife and I are planning a trip (hopefully) to Mirebeau, possibly next year, to experience in person this exciting connection we have found.

Please feel free to email me. I am at work and don't have access to my database (although I have a MS Word copy of the book I am writing (which includes those baptismal images).

As to your question, I have not done much in that area. We have mostly been focused on the archives in France (which I discovered available online for free).

Again, please feel free to email with any further questions. I'll be happy to share what I do have.

Hello,

My mother was Madeleine Chaloux born in Montreal in 1920, daughter of Polydor Chaloux and Rachel Lachance.

My grand-father received as a gift his genealogy from Joseph Drouin whom he was acquainted with. In the 60's, one of his nephews, Father Jean-Marie Chaloux, revised it and apparently established that we descend not from Pierre-François Chaloux as Drouin indicated, but rather from Jacques Chaloux(or Challeau)who immegrated to New France from St-André de Mirebeau, Vienne, France.

To confirm this I would need to know with certainty that the parents of Pierre Jacques Chaloux who married Marie Marguerite Larue in St-Ours on March 31, 1761 were effectively Jacques Chaloux and Félicité Berthiaume. The mariage certificate of Pierre Jacques Chaloux & Marie Marguerite Larue does not bear the name of the groom's parents, only that of the bride's mother, Thérèse Leclair (or Leclerc). Do you have any conclusive evidence of this filiage?

Also, I found on Fichier Origine (PRDH - http://www.fichierorigine.com/detail.php?numero=280008)a digitized picture of the baptism certificate of Jacques Challeau, presumably from St-André Parich in Mirebeau. According to the PDRH file, his mother's name was Boussin, but she is named Bonivet in her son's mariage certificate to Félicité Berthiaume in 1736 and said to be deceased at that time, as her husband Jacques Challeau. The digitized image of her son's baptism certificate does show that her name is spelled Bousin with one "s" and not Boutin - although the form of the letter "s" can be misleading. This can be attested however by comparing the letter "s" at the end of "Jacques" to the letter "s" in her name.

I have not however seen any images of other acts bearing her name - is it clearly Boutin rather than Bousin?

My research in the Chaloux family is not as extensive as yours, but if I can be of assistance, please contact me. French is my first language.

Hélène Dandurand

Genealogy season is upon us again (as I recently like to call it - summer time, reruns, etc.). And we've dome some of that gruelling research in the online archives of Viennes (still at it). We made a small breakthrough in finding the marriage record of Gabrielle Boutin and Jacques Challeau. Their marriage date was 21 June 1682 at Saint Porchaire church in the city of Poitiers, Viennes, France. Gabrielle's parents are listed as Vincent Boutin and Chenault; and Jacques' parents were listed as Jean (Jehan) Challeau and Louise Morin (Moricet). The spelling "Jehan" appears to be the normal spelling in that time for what we now spell as "Jean", and (parenthetically) "Jehanne" is the spelling then for the current "Jeanne."

Poitiers is the nearby city (about 20 miles south) of Jacques' birthplace of Mirebeau. I'm still researching as to what really was going on with him. Jaques Challeau and Gabrielle Boutin was a Boulanger (baker/breadmaker) in Mirebeau, and their numerous children were baptized there. Yet his first marriage was in Poitiers (20 miles south), and his second marriage in 1709 was in Saint-Genest D'Ambiere (about 20 miles to the east). This is making research on this ancient family confusing. I am currently in the middle of researching the mountain of data in that state to track down where their relatives lived. More later as we find more. For now, I want to get the word out about this important data for the Chaloux family's ancestry.

I had the exact same feelings about the website. I am guessing because it is in French and in France, may be the reason.

I did find Jacques(2)'s baptism. It was through the illedged birthday from the Tanguay books that I pretty quickly pinpointed it. I saved a PDF of the section of the page. And that is where I uncovered the BOUTIN and CHALLEAU family name details. The date, by the way was an exact match with the Tanguay date.

One of the main reasons I am so anxious to spread this around is if I can get other researchers looking through this mostly undiscovered massive collection, more work will be accomplished.

Thank you for sharing that information. You are right, I checked out the web site and there are a ton of records there. I understand some French but the handwriting is what I have the most difficult time deciphering. I am going to browse and see what I can find. Were you able to find Jacques' baptism? It is exciting to look through records that most people have never seen! I am surprised that this web site is not publicized more. Thanks again for your input.

My wife is the CHALOUX descendant (her mother has a maiden name of Chaloux), but I'm the heavy researcher in the family. I have corresponded with another Sharlow researcher whose email I'll have to dig up.

The archive website is I believe a government site in France. Here is the web address: http://www.archives-vienne.cg86.fr/ . But be forewarned that it is all in French. I understand French (not fluently), and it is some work. Also, be forewarned (on a second note) that the documents are ridiculously difficult to read. I've had to do research there in small chunks. I went by the stated datea of birth for Jacques Challeau.

Let me speak to the Gabrielle Banivert detail. I dug for many years trying to find anything on BANIVERT/BANIVET/BONIVET/etc. And found virtually nothing. Then, when I found the baptismal record for Jacques(2) Challeau at the above website - the original record, not someones database, this being the one married to Felicite Berthiaume, I saw the father as Jacques(1) Challeau (the "(1)" added by me for clarification), I noted that the mother's family name was clearly BOUTIN, not BANIVERT/BANIVET/BONIVET/etc. Further, I dug around further in the St. Andre de Mirebeau parish records, and found her name clearly as BOUTIN, not the BANIVERT/BANIVET/BONIVET/etc. as is believed by most databases. This opened up a whole new chapter in finding the origins of the CHALOUX family. Not to mention the CHALLEAU spelling being also definitively the correct spelling, as it is listed exactly that way for virtually all of the family records I have thus far located in Viennes. I can see if an unclear record was being reviewed how Bonivet could be mistakenly substituted for the correct BOUTIN. a "u" in cursive looks similar to an "n". a "t" in cursive in an old sloppy record might be substituted for a correct "i", and as crazily sloppy as some of the records were, "in" could be mistaken for "et". After spending the 100's of hours in the Viennes archives, I can easily believe that. I believe the Banivert view emanated from the Tanguay books in the 1890s or so. He listed her as Banivet, and many records since has listed them that way.

My belief is that her family name is definitely BOUTIN.

Regarding the three brothers, based on the research in Mirebeau, Gabrielle Boutin definitely died in France, and never came over to Canada. And I don't have any listing for brothers with the names listed as the other two brothers who supposedly came over with Jacques(2) Challeau. There are records of these two other people coming over, so that is still a mystery. But I don't think I presume them to be his brothers. I would be interested to find the original hospital records for them. There were some other Chaloux variant surnames that were actually possibly variants from an actually different family (not Challeau). That is one of the possibilities.

The things I found in France at the Viennes archive site were basically that the real original family name was CHALLEAU, and Gabrielle's real family name was BOUTIN. And also the names and dates of birth for Jacques(2)'s brothers and sisters, as well as a second wife for Jacques(1), and his father, grandfather, and wide connections for the Challeau family in the Mirebeau area.

Hope all of this rambling answers some questions. We are very excited about these findings, as they are, I believe new among modern researchers (mostly due to the French language issue and very hard to read documents). Take some aspirin and drink some coffe before starting research in those archives (you'll see why when you get there). Good luck. There is a ton of information in there that is yet to be put out on the internet, but will take some gruelling hours of hard work to get through it.

Judy,

I am a descendant of William Eli Sharlow originally Chaloux/Chaloup who was born Jul. 14, 1814 in St. Benoit, Quebec. He married Mary Euphrosine Cuillerier on Jan. 15, 1839 in St. Raphael, Ontario and then settled in Brasher Falls, St. Lawrence, NY (this is right near the St. Regis Reservation). They had 11 children and are the ancestors of all Sharlow's that currently live in that area today. I have been researching the Sharlow family for years and I am particularly interested in your post as I concentrate most of my research on northern New York.

We have a connection as your Francois Chaloup who married Madeline Fortier is my William's uncle. My William Eli Chaloux/Chaloup/Sharlow was the son of Pierre Chaloup and Angelique Legault dit Deslauriers. They were married Jan. 18, 1813 in St. Benoit, Quebec. Francois Chaloup was Pierre's brother. They were both sons of Jacques Chaloup and Marie-Anne Fauteux.

I understand your family adopted the Wolfe name. I had heard that some of the Chaloup descendants did this as the name means Wolf or "Call of the Wolf" in French. Did your Wolfe ancestors settle in St. Lawrence of Franklin county? I am currently going through the St. Benoit parish records, trying to decipher them and find all of the Chaloup's. Hope to hear from you!

I am a descendant of Jacques Challeau/Gabrielle Banivert. My great-great-great grandfather was William Eli Sharlow who settled in Brasher Falls, St. Lawrence, NY. He is the ancestor of all the Sharlow's that live today in that area. I have been researching this family for a number of years. I recently found William's birth record in the St. Benoit parish register. He was born Jul. 14, 1814, son of Pierre Chaloux/Chaloup and Angelique Legault-Deslauriers. Pierre was the son of Jacques Chaloux and Marie-Anne Fauteux. Jacques was the son of Jacques and Marie Marguerite Larue-Desplaines. Jacques was the son of Jacques and Felicite Berthiaume. Jacques was the son of Jacques and Gabrielle Banivert. I am very curious about the web site you indicated contained baptismal records of Jacques and Gabrielle in France. Also, where did the story of the parents sending the three sons to Canada come from? Were the parents killed in war? I would love to hear more about this. I have researched the Sharlow/Chaloux line for years and did not hear of this until reading various message board posts.

I have just happened upon these bulletin board postings regarding the Chalut family, who are also my family. Following is the direct line that my family descend from.

Jacques Chaliou dit Chateau (married M. I know nothing of the last two sons. However, with Andre, she has another 7 sons and the Chaloup family from this time go back and forth between the two names (Chaloup and Brunette) until early in the 19th century when they appear to switch to Brunette. After Xavier’s death in Hull, two of his half brothers, Moses and Arthur Brunette, travel to Hull and accompany the body back to the township of Fitzroy, Carleton County, Ontario for burial.

father of
	Armedos Chalut dit Brunet (married Anne Honora Barnet)
	b Oct 25, 1851
	m May 28, 1872, St. John Chrysostom Church, Arnprior, Ontario
	d Nov 27, 1925

father of
	Mary Ellen Chaloux dit Brunette (married Hugh Patrick McElroy)
	b Jan 26, 1879 Arnprior, Ontario
	m Aug 7, 1899, Hull (Notre-Dame-de-Grace), Quebec
	d approx. 1938, Ottawa, Ontario

If anyone has any information regarding this line, I would be interested in anything. In particular, the name of Andre Brunet's first wife who appears to be a Chaloup, possibly Ester or Ellen. From the entry in the church register deaths, it is very difficult to figure out which is the correct first name.

I am so busy at work and getting the "family" version of the first draft of the book ready that I have precious little time to work on further researching, but....

I had to share this little tidbit that I just now found. To preface, there are apparently a BUNCH of Challeau births marriages and deaths in and around the Mirebeau area in the various little villages and parishes. St-Genest D'Ambiere is a popular one, Bournezeau another, and so on. The one that I JUST opened and on the first page of a VERY OLD parish record was the marriage in 1619 in Amberre of a Jacques Challeau son of Jehan Challeau (who I have seen in some of the old Poitou genealogical books). There is nothing conclusive here; I'm just so excited to have stumbled on this one that I had to put it out there. This may connect us back to the mid-1500's and possibly earlier.

NEW BREAKTHROUGH ON CHALOUX'S FROM FRANCE

It has long been believed that the original immigrant for most Chaloux's in Canada and USA came through Jacques Chaloux and wife Felicite Berthiaume; with this Jacques being the son of Jacques Chaloux and Gabrielle Banivet. There are numerous variants associated with the (Chalion, Chateau, Chaillon, etc for Jacque, and Bonnivet, Basinet, Bazinet, etc. for Gabrielle).

Last weekend I came upon an official website in France with photocopies of original parish records for Vienne region in France. Included in this huge data set were photostatic copies of those original records for Saint Andre de Mirebeau in Poitou, France (the believed birthplace of Jacques Chaloux (the one married to Felicite Berthiaume).

I located and copied his baptismal record and that of his two sisters (Andree and Gabrielle), which I am including in the little book I am working on of my wife's Chaloux ancestry.

So I wish to shatter the myths and state conclusively that the parents were named JACQUES CHALLEAU and GABRIELLE BOUTIN. This was clearly and consistently so in all three original baptismal records (Jacques and his two previously unknown sisters).

I intend to continue digging through this information to try and prove one way or another whether the parents came to Canada or died in France.

A further POSSIBLE detail is a father for Jacques (husband of Gabrielle Boutin). There is a Renee Challeau who seems to fit as possibly being the father. This is not yet fact, but I'm putting it out so you other researchers may be able to find something.

A final POSSIBLE detail is some family members for Gabrielle Boutin. There is a Marie Boutin listed in some of the baptismal records corresponding to where she MAY be a sister. There is a Jean Boutin corresponding as a possible father. These were all located in Saint Andre de Mirebeau.

We are very excited about this new breakthrough, and hope this will be of help to the rest of you fellow researchers.

Based on the information in your posting, I believe I can connect you back into the Chaloux lines. In brief, here is how I have you connected (by the way, my wife and I have been voracious in our research lately, and in the last few months have put together a massive amount of the Chaloux lineage).

Anyway, here is how I have your Thomas Velus/Chaloux/Chaloup/Wolfe connecting back..
His parents were Francois Chaloux/Chaloup/Wolfe and Aurela Benware/Benvare (I wonder if that may a derivative of Benoit).

Francois's parents were (another) Francois Chaloux (b:1792) married to Madeleine Fortier. They were married 01 Sept 1817 in St. Benoit Qc.

His parents were Jacques Chaloux (06Jan1762-1835) married to Marie-Anne Fauteux, married 13 Jan 1784 in St-Eustache Qc.

His parents were Jacques Chaloux (20Feb1736/7 - 1800) married to Marie-Margaret Larue-Desplaines(b: 17Jan1742/3). They were married 31Mar1761 in St. Ours Richelieu, Qc.

His parents were Jacques ChHaillon/Chalou/Chalion/Chateau/etc. (02Jun1695-10Dec1746; B in Diocese Mirebeau, Fr., D in St-Augustin-De-Desmaures, Qc). He was married to Felicite Berthiaume (05Jun1712-????). They were married 12Nov1736 in St-Anne-De-Laperade, Qc.

His parents were Jacques Chalou/etc. married to Gabrielle Bonnivet/Bonnivet/Banivet/etc. Little else is known about them.

I am researching the lineage of the Wolfe surname. My great-grandmother was Carrie Wolfe. Carrie's parents were Thomas (Velus) Wolfe (1859-1945) and Leonora/Lenora Ploof (1863-1892). I'd like to find out if Thomas's wife was part American Indian, of the Ahkwesasne Indian Reservation in northern upstate New York. Many of Thomas ancestors were from Quebec, and France prior, and their surname used to be spelled Chaloux or Chaloup.
Francis Chaloup/Wolfe and Aurela Benware/Benvare were Thomas' parents. Thomas' grandparents were Francois Chaloup and Madeline Fortier, according to my father's geneology chart. However, it does not show any children married to a Eudora.
Are you from New York state? - Judy

I hope the information helped.

You might try the RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) for Quebec web site to see if there is someone who has access to the resources you posted on your original message.

Hi,
Saint Philippe Laprairie on 08 Jan 1850 the marriage between Ambroise Sanguinet (son of Charles and Catherine Hamel) and Marguerite Robert (daughter of Pierre and Euphrosine Boisson) took place.
Maybe this is your ancestor and he was later named Charles after his father. That happened quite often, specially when they emigrated to the US Franch Canadians had a tendency to use simple names, easier to pronounce in English.
If it is the case, Charles Sanguinet was the son of Ambroise Sanguinet, Lord of Lasalle, and Julie Lemoine de Martigny, married in Montreal in 1798.

Luis

Hi,

I can't answer your question about access to the books you have noted but I wonder if the following information might relate to this Catherine Lemesle. The "first mention in the Country" is 1671 similar to the information shown on the posted images.

You might want to check out the File Origin web site noted below.

From this web site:
home page: http://www.fichierorigine.com/

http://www.fichierorigine.com/detail.php?numero=242471

LEMESLE, Catherine 242471
Status: Married
Date of Birth: Towards 1646
Place of origin: Rouen (Seine-Maritime) 76540
Parents: John and Margaret Fox
Occupation of father: Marchand bourgeois
First mention in the country: 1671
Occupancy on arrival:Daughter of the King
Wedding date: 13-06-1672
Place of Marriage: Quebec (Notre Dame)
Spouse: Pierre Morin
Death or burial: After 08-06-1721
Remarks: A brother and sister were baptized in Rouen (St-Pierre-du-Chastel): Jacques, Marie and 05-10-1652, the 01-02-1654.
Identification DGFQ, P. 835
Researcher (s) Archangel Godbout
Reference OFC, P. 43

This database was developed by Marcel Fournier, coordinator
File Origin and distributed by the Quebec Federation of Societies genealogy for researchers in history and genealogy.

what to do with record info?

I've reached a bit of a dead end here. I've attached two images that show there exists immigration records for Catherine Lemesle. I have an ancestor by this name who immigrated to Canada from France (Normandy) and would like to think that one of these records might actually link to her.

Here's my problem: How do I find out the information that exists in these books? Would libraries be helpful in this instance? I live in the US, so I am guessing that I would not be able to access Canadian libraries.

Thanks for any help/guidance.
Pam

My name is Robert Charles Sanguinet b1957, son of Charles A. Sanguinet b1930 (F), son of Charles Roberts Sanguinet b1896 d1960 (gF), son of Charles Wilford Sanguinet b1874 (Montreal) d1933 (GgF), son of Charles Sanguinet b???? d1899 (G2gF) and Maragret Robare b???? d1898. I've been told that we're related to Ambroise (brother of Charles) -- I don't have genealogical info linking Ambroise (my G4GF or G5gF) to Charles (G2gF). I have some names of brothers and sisters of my father, grandfather and great grandfather (CWS). CWS brother is Maxmillian Sanguinet. I have a collection of (both paper and scanned in) letters from Ambroise and possibly Charles written in old French Canadian to their children, spouses, and families -- supposedly right before they were hung. Approximately 30 scanned images -- I've tried to give the paper copies to the Canadian archives -- to no avail. My father CAS stated that an aunt Emma Sanguinet gave them to him 70 years ago... and that he believes they were copies of the original letters ... Kamijudo(at)aol.com is my e-mail. Charlies301(at)aol.com is my fathers.
