There is a tiny scrap of information about a William Leslie, aged 20, arriving on the "STORM KING" at Moreton Bay, Brisbane from London, on 3rd May 1873. It is on Ancestry under "Queensland Passenger Lists, 1848 - 1912". It is a "long-shot", and there is no proof that it is him.

If you try a google for "Trove Newspapers - "STORM KING" arriving Moreton Bay 3rd May 1873," there is also a little more, (but not much).

Thanks for the great information still trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
I have a William McJannet who died 1920 Australia (b abt 1848 Ayr, Scotland) aged 72 years. The death index has father Gabriel Muir which I now think is meant to read Gabriel Muir McJannet and the mother as Ellen (Helen) Wood Lawson
William McJannet married Maggie Crawford 1913 when he was 65 years!! There was a will/probate notice in the newspaper 16 June 1920 which confirms the death is correct but not sure if this matches the death index 1920 - maybe there were two William McJannet deaths in 1920.
Any information greatly appreciated, regards Alison howe99@netspace.net.au

Hi
I do not think that there were any Wilhemina MacPherson's in our family but I will keep your query in mind in case I find a Minnie (a popular nickname) MacPherson in the next generation.

My great grandfather was married at age 20 in Brisbane Australia in 1875. He was born in Fyvie and some time between 1871 and 1875 he emigrated to Australia. I am unsure when he changed his name from William Strachan Beattie or why. He was listed in the 1871 census as a tailor's apprentice and in the Brisbane census as a tailor. I cannot find records of passage under either name.

I read a book at the National Library of Australia some years ago called "Letters from highland emigrants in Australia, dated between September and December 1852".

If anyone has interests in emigrants to Australia I would recommend getting this book via your local library. There are about 10 or so letters from a range of people who arrived in Australia in the early 1850s.

I posted about this book on the Ancestry Scotland Western Isles board in 2008 under a thread called "Emigrant letters home - Isle of Skye residents in Australia 1850s". My listing provided names of families here and back in Skye which were mentioned in the letters.

I cannot now remember what details it included about the emigration process itself, but it was a very interesting read.

If you are in Australia, do a search on the NLA site for emigration from Scotland - there are a couple of publications they list which you might find useful. There is one from the Highland and Islands Emigration Society which is around the time you are looking for information.

Hope this helps. Anne
The attached link might help you a little bit. It’s actually about emigration from Ireland in the mid 1800s and the focus is on the USA because most Irish went there rather than Australia (only about 5 to 10% of Irish emigrants went to Australia or NZ). It does however tell you a bit about the arrangements at Liverpool for lodging and compensation if the sailing was delayed.

http://www.finnvalley.ie/history/emigration/index.html
Does anyone know of any diaries or journals kept by
Travellers to Australia in the early 1850s? I am interested in finding
Out about the procedures they had to go through from arrival in the departure port city to their arrival at their destination port.
I'm also interested in any guides emigrants may have been given before the voyage.
Thanks if you can advise.

Early Settlers in Kangaroo Flat

When I was about 11 my grandfather took me to Kangaroo Flat. He did not explain why nor tell me that it was where he was born and I remember feeling disappointed that there were no kangaroos jumping around! Yet he was born here in Jan 1859 and his family at that time were living in a tent.
There were two families closely connected, two daughters of Margaret MacPherson, Fanny who had married George Teasdake and Catherine, who had married John Templeton. It appears that the two husbands worked together searching for gold in Kangaroo Gulley. Later Margaret MacPherson joined her daughters at Kangaroo Flat with her youngest son, Alexander William who was still a child. At first Christina had been left behind working as a domestic in Melbourne but she later came to the Flat and married in Bendigo. John MacPherson also came to join his family in the Bendigo area. So all of the MacPhersons who immigrated on the Priscilla from Liverpool in 1852, arriving in Melbourne in February 1853 were now living in Kangaroo Flat. The father,
Donald MacPherson, seemingly died in Portree in 1849 and never came to Australia! Margaret was listed as a widow on the shipping list.

I am trying to locate my Great Great Grandmother. I have a record of her marriage to Henry Charles Ship 6 June 1878 in Ulverstone, Tasmania, Australia. At the time she was listed as 23 years old, born approx 1855 in Scotland. However, historical records also have her year of birth as 1852.
Agnes died 17 December 1899 in Railton, Tasmania, Australia.
I cannot locate a record of her immigration from Scotland, nor records of her birth in Scotland.
Any assistance would be gratefully received!
There is a Glenelg, away up in the West Highlands of Scotland. ...Your document attached to your post for 1856 gives him as being born there, with his parents being
James & Elizabeth. But your public tree has him born in Glasgow to Kenneth Campbell & Catherine, and you give this marriage a question mark....

Glenelg is next to Glenelg Bay, and I have a feeling
that some early ships left Scotland from that area - but you also believe that there was a Glasgow connection, so it is unclear.
Brian, Glasgow.
P.S. It could just as easily be Glasgow they departed from, because this was the biggest shipping port in Scotland by far.

I'm trying to track down the birth/baptism date and place for James Campbell (of Lanark and/or Glenelg) as shown on the two attachments. One attachment is the "Ship's Immigrants List' and the other is the 'Board's Immigrant List'. There are minor discrepancies, but I feel sure it is the same person on each list.

I'm also having a little trouble deciphering some of the words. You can 'zoom' on the attached.

Any help would be appreciated as to place and date of birth, and as regards 'Relatives in Colony', is that Uncles? and who are the '?uncles?. I can't seem to find any detail of a marriage of the parents in ?Lanark? and I see the mother had Glenelg as a place of residence. Based on his 23 years of age, I presume he was born c1833.

Many thanks for reading and any help you can give me,

Colin

Thanks. I have seen that manifest and am still trying to figure out who her parents were, I have seen reference to a Charles and Margaret, but in the Scottish Census info I cannot find a Charles and Margaret from Edinburgh with a daughter Agnes. I believe the reference you cite is the correct Agnes Maude Hope, I think I have found the family that hosted her in Montreal, but it is hard to make the connections.

Are you any relation to this line?? Agnes Maude Hope is my grandmother, who I never met, nor did my mother ever speak of her.

Thanks again for your interest, help.

Hi,
I was looking at a transcript of the original ships passenger list, and wondered if you have the full information. It is as follows:

OMEGA departed Plymouth 13th Aug 1857, arrived Pt Adelaide Sat 14th Nov 1857. On board were 114 English, 18 Scots and 178 Irish. The Miller family was...

James Miller age 33 Carpenter Dumbarton.
Margaret 32
James 8
Robert 6
John 2
Mary Ann Infant

O'Neil? Ann 14 Niece? .....with this family.

All these christian names are very common, so that makes it difficult, especially since there were no Electoral Rolls at that time. Only chance to discover what happened to Ann O'Neill would be to find a marriage between say 1862 [when she would be 19] and at a guess
1873 when she would be 30.

Brian, Glasgow

Their death certificates should tell you how long they were in Australia for (and which States)
That should narrow down the search by about 48years for William and 10years for Janet.

If they were UNASSISTED then they could just be listed as Mr, Mr W, W, Miss, J etc and under any variant spelling of AITCHISON.

Kellie

Hello
I am trying to find this passenger list of the Eastern Empire
1864. I see that you have managed to access it, is there any chance that you have found on this list a Georgina Sophia TOWNSEND she would have been around 18 years old in 1864. This would be a great help to me. Also is there any stories of this trip?
Many thanks
AMB

Hi,
Where did he die?
Your dates must be incorrect as if he was born 1827 and died 1941 he would have been almost 115years old.

Kellie

I am looking for any information about Adam Craig who was born in Eckford in Roxburghshire scotland in 1827. He does not appear on th Scottish census for 1861 and 1871. I have been told he went to Australia. He was a shepherd. In 1941 when he died he was described as a retired sheep farm manager.

May I suggest you look at Oz Archives - should be able to find their entry etc

Also obtain a copy of their deaths - these CAN be a goldmine - usually stating how long in Oz + parents names etc etc

You might aslo try the Sands Directories

Thanks for the fantastic info you found. How did you locate it? Nothing came up for me.

Gordon was born in ~1880 and going on what you found he was a teamster and a settler. He is also listed as a farmer on the marriage certificate of his son William (Wally) who was my grandfather. Wally was born in 1906 and has no middle name, which makes it difficult to track him down. The family emigrated to Western Australia in ~1912.
