Trying to find parents of Agnes Maud Hope. She married a Sidney L. Spragg in Truro, Nova Scotia on December 5, 1903--her parents listed only as Charles and Margret on the marriage register. Scotland Census do not show a Charles and Margaret Hope in Edinburgh with daughter Agnes in the proper time period.

Only know that she was married in December 1903, in Nova Scotia, Canada, with parents listed as Charles and Margret, no last names given. Marriage license says she was 21--suggesting a birthyear of 1882 First child born 1901. Do not know when she came to Canada from Scotland--but presumably 1900.

Thanks. I have seen that manifest and am still trying to figure out who her parents were, I have seen reference to a Charles and Margaret, but in the Scottish Census info I cannot find a Charles and Margaret from Edinburgh with a daughter Agnes. I believe the reference you cite is the correct Agnes Maude Hope, I think I have found the family that hosted her in Montreal, but it is hard to make the connections.

Are you any relation to this line?? Agnes Maude Hope is my grandmother, who I never met, nor did my mother ever speak of her.

Thanks again for your interest, help.

Hi, My great-grandmother was Agnes Maud Hope. She had a daughter, Florence. Florence Spragg Merrill had a daughter Roberta Hope Merrill my mother. My name is Audrey Hope. My grandmother said her mother died when she was 16.

Good to hear from you--I have met with Steven Merrill, Florence's son, about a year ago when I was in New York state, and I had heard about your mother, Roberta. I met Florence when she came to my mother's funeral in '86. My Mom is Agnes Maude Spragg Ide, Florence's older sister.

I have struggled to get any info on my grandmother, Agnes Maude Hope, born in Scotland, probably around 1881 and she died in Maine on 21 April, 1932, I have been to her gravesite in Bangor. I have her crossing the Atlantic in 1899 and being married in Nova Scotia in 1903. Her parents were Charles and Margaret--but that is where I get blocked....any info you might have beyond this brief summary here would be appreciated.

So glad to hear that the Hope line continues..and would like to stay in touch.

my email address is guilford_ide@comcast.net, I live in NH.

Surnames: Hope/Peebles
There was a marriage of a Charles Hope to a Margaret Peebles on 28th Dec 1873 at Cramond, Edinburgh. They had a daughter Agnes Ramage Hope, who was born on 28th Oct 1881 at 1 Allan St, Edinburgh. Charles Hope, her father, was a Railway Porter

Do you happen to know if the exact date of Agnes Maude Hope's birth was 28th Oct 1881...?
If it was, then I would think this might well be her.

You wont find Agnes on the Scottish census. If she was born on 28th oct 1881, she misses the 1881, and as she left Scotland in 1899, she misses the 1891 census. However, I have seen a census for 1881 at St George, Edinburgh, which has a Charles Hope, aged 33, and a Margrat Hope, aged 29. They also have children: Margrat Peebles aged 9; Catherine Hope aged 7; Isabella Hope aged 5; and Annie Hope aged 2.

Margrat, aged 29, had the unmarried name Margaret Peebles, and it looks like the Margaret Peebles aged 9 here was born one year before she was married, so took her mother's name Peebles. Then the mother got married to Charles Hope, and the following children took the name of Hope.
