Hi Leanne,

I have not located the church record yet but I know he had brothers named John and Robert plus there is another valuation record naming a Patrick or Peter Hatton living in Galway at the time of Francis' birth and quite possibly could be the father. I have yet to establish a definite link though.

Pauline

Francis Hatton emigrated from Dublin

Francis was born in Co. Galway, Ireland c. 1851. He was employed in Dublin as a printer and later as a bookbinder and he lived in Dublin a number of years before he was said to have emigrated to Australia, sometime after 1878 and before 1901. His religion was either Church of Ireland or Presbyterian.

We know nothing about what happened to him after that. Does anybody have information about him? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Pauline

I just wanted to know if there is anyway to find information about a sponsor. I have a relation who immigrated from Ireland in 1860's and the lady who sponsored her also sponsored a lot of other Irish girls. The sponsors name was Mary Reilly and the girls were to be servants.

Any help with this would be great. I can't find anything much so far.

Hi Dani,

If your family paid their own fare then they won't appear in the indexes, also many of the passenger lists from the 1860's were lost in the 1893 Brisbane flood.

NSW passenger lists are indexed on the NSW State Records website, and those for Victoria are on PROV (just Google).

Debra

I am unable to find how William, Isabella & John English arrived in Queensland. It must be around the 1863-1865 era as John was born abt 1863 in Ireland whereas his younger brother was born in Queensland in 1865.
I cannot locate any passenger lists with their name or anything - it is like they didn't exist! Except that their marriage certificate is from 1862 in Northern Ireland.
P.S. Both William & Isabella died in Queensland - maybe they didnt arrive here first?

If you have any information I would truly appreciate it.
Kind Regards
Dani Benstead

John Cahir (1829-1911) from Foilrim, Clare, Ireland, emigrated to Australia

Trying to trace the Australian branch of my family. My great-grandfather's brother, John Cahir, was born in Foilrim, County Clare, Ireland in 1829 (son of James Cahir and Mary Connor); he left for Australia and married Margaret Cahir (yes, it appears her maiden and marriage names are the same) in 1853 and had a daughter, Ellen (apparently an only child according to family correspondence). Additional correspondence indicates that John died in 1911. It is believed that the family lived in Lal Lal, Victoria (near Geelong/Ballarat).

Thanks for that Anne,
Although I have that information already, I am still on the hunt for more information on Jane Walsh.

I have recently discovered she was from Boherbue, County Cork, Ireland, and was part of an emigration scheme which appears to have originated in County Cork although the barque Edward Coulston left from Liverpool. There is a newspaper clip from the Cork Constitution April 1833 http://corkgen.org/publicgenealogy/cork/potpourri/corkancest...
There is some other interesting information on the site for anyone researching Cork immigration & convicts.

Lady De Bathe who seems to have been the head of this Emigration Scheme, it appears she and her husband had estates in Ireland and England. He was in Parliament at one time but at this stage have not been able to find where to search to see if their Manorial Estate Records might hold any further information on her “Good works”
Someone sent me some information (terribly hard to read) which states the girls stayed at the Kings Orphanage in Hobart until jobs could be found for them. It mainly concerned costs of food, etc, however, there was also a page showing where the girls were eventually employed and by whom. Jane Walsh was employed by Mr James Grey of St Pauls Plain and her pay was £12 per annum.

I still have not found Jane's death recorded anywhere. Recently I did find mention of a J. Milkins and a Paul Milkins in the online search Geelong District database: Admission Books of the Geelong Infirmary and Benevolent Asylum; both admitted sometime in 1876. I know Paul died in January 1877 and was stated on his death record he was a widower, I am hoping to find more info from this source.

Hi tracysw1
Perhaps you have moved on from your below meassage, however I was interested in your question and did an ancestry search for marriage record for Jane Walsh, and there is a record in Tasmania for her marriage to Paul Wilkins (Milkins?) in Campbeltown Tasmania in 1834. Tassie BDM do not have an online service but this might be of assistance to you. this may give you her birthplace +++
You will have to contact them and submit a request for certificate.
Jope this has helped
Anne

After the death of his wife in Tipperary, Patrick immigrated to Australia in 1868 arriving with his adult sons in Melbourne aboard the 'Conflict'. While he gave his age as 50 upon arrival, Patrick was actually closer to 70 years of age. I am interested in what became of sons, Michael and Walter. I believe they were all carpenters.
Hi suzjking,
On Margaret Ryan's wedding certificate the two witnesses are James Ryan and James Murray. I have always presumed that James Ryan would be either a father or a brother to Margaret. Considering that she was 16 at the time of marriage, she would of needed an adults consent to marry. Strangly nothing was wrong with her fertility, although it was a couple of years before she had children. Maybe she still lived with her family? who knows.
I did a Google search for "Ryan Kirkconnell Genealogy" and came up with a Ray Ryan who was doing research on the Local church St Mary's at Kirkconnell. No he was not related to us but he was a descendant of James Murray.
James Murray was the original owner of the land where the church now stands, before the Church was built it was a graveyard and to his recollection it was called "Redbank" The place where Margaret Lahy Nee Ryan was laid to rest. Also the same Grave Yard where Patrick Lahy was buried but by now it had taken on the name of Kirkconnell.
Also of interest on the marriage certificate of Catherine Lahy and James Sullivan the witness is John Jordan brother- in-law of Catherine Lahy and Mary Ann Muray (Murray) Mary Ann Murray (nee Farmer) is the wife of the James Murray as mentioned on her parents wedding certificate.
James Murray also turned up in the year of 1836, It is a possibility that he may have been on the same ship.
Margaret Lahy (nee Ryan) married and died as a Margaret, but on a lot of the childrens info the Name Mary does pop up a lot more than Margaret.
Cheers Bradley Hayden

'THAMES" IMMIGRATION SHIP 1826 CORK IRELAND TO SYDNEY

Please let me introduce myself. I am Bob Starling and I am a family history researcher. My interest is the Irish immigration ship the Thames which brought wives and children from Cork Ireland to Sydney to unite with their husband/father who had been transported prior to 1826. The Thames was the first immigration ship to carry families direct from Ireland. My connection with the Thames is through my wife’s line. Her Grandmother was a Whitfield with her line back to Jacob Whitfield who was transported with his family immigrating on the Thames.

Researching the families that immigrated on the Thames is a challenging undertaking as there is no official passenger list existing in the NSW State Archives, the National Archives in Canberra or the National Archives in Dublin Ireland. Fortunately a researcher named Lyn Vincent of Lyndon Genealogy has managed to reconstruct a passenger list through using the 1828 Census, the Ship Surgeon’s Report, Birth, Death and Marriage Indexes and the Australian Biographical & Genealogical Record.

The purpose of listing this message is to locate extended family members of those that immigrated on the Thames with the view to drawing together background information on what has happened to those Thames families and their convict husbands since 1826. My objective is to document as many as possible Thames family stories and provide this information to the Mitchell Library and to the Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG) in the form of a manuscript. A copy would also be made available to those families that contribute to the manuscript.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Bob Starling
clayton@aanet.com.au

I've seen Marg mistaken for Mary regularly.
Can you please let me know where you found this information.
Somehow Catherine met Patrick Lahy and he received permission to marry her in Bathurst in November 1336
Thanks,
Suzanne

My ancestress Margaret Ryan aged 16 and her brother Simon aged 9 arrived on the Roslyn Castle from Cork on 26th February 1836. I know this from their gaol admission sheets later in life (young margaret married a convict patrick lahy 14 November 1836 and I beleive he led them both astray). They must have been free passangers, I cannot find a record for either of their parents James & Catherine being convicts and they were not convicts themselves. Does anyone know of where I can find more information about them?

Hi again,

Ship: DUKE OF NORFOLK
Date: 1900
To : Brisbane
On Board: Patk Ryan
James
Katie
Margaret
Patk

All these Ryan were in their twenties. Maybe one of the two Patk's here is the one that was deleted from the voyage on my previous email. On the other hand, this may be the wrong family - do any of these other names ring a bell with you?

Brian, Glasgow

Kevin,
Henry and Patk are both showing on the original ships list, right next to one another. However a thick line has been drawn through Patk's name, as if he didn't make the journey afterall.

Also, as you can see on the attached printer-friendly print-out, it refers to Patk as a POTENTIAL travelling companion.....If only the ships log gave the address where each passenger came from, there would be a much better chance of knowing whether they were related or not. But it doesn't.

Brian, Glasgow
