I am trying to find details of a passenger of the ship Diadem, arrived Melbourne 1850.
My gr grandmother was on board:
Sharkey, Elizabeth age 17 from Omagh Co Tyrone.
How can I find more details on her in Ireland - her parents are unknown?
Where were the girls taken to as the 'depot' in Melbourne?
She worked for John English in Melbourne - he paid 10 pounds for six months.
All of this information is from 'Barefoot & Pregnant' - thanks Trevor.
All the best from Allannah

Hi Alannah, Chrissy,
Have you seen www.irishfaminememorial.org ? I'm trying to remember info about the immigration depot that was arranged for the female orphans in Melbourne--corner of William St and...? I would suspect she came from a workhouse in Enniskillen or maybe Strabane--was there one there? See the links page on that website that takes you to workhouses.org.uk That can tell you among other things what records have survived. Indoor admissions and discharge registers have survived for Enniskillen for eg.
good luck with it

Hi Trev

Thanks for your reply. I actually put Eliza Sharkey on the memorial wall at Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney and went to the opening dedication by the Irish President. Thanks for the clues for the workhouse links; I did go to those and there is lots of information about the workhouses which is excellent. Also, I know Eliza came from Strabane so went to the Strabane Workhouse links and there are a few photos and more information, so all in all, a successful search - and more to follow up.
Thanks to you! Regards Chrissy

Hi Chrissy,

Good to hear. If you or Alannah would like your names alongside Eliza Sharkey when I come to put the 'Diadem' orphan list on that website, just let me know. It won't be for a while yet, as there are a number of other vessels in the queue, and i need to have a life.

In the meantime, should you have access to a copy of my "barefoot & pregnant?..." (maybe your library?) I know the chap whose orphan ancestors (1st on the list) came by the 'Derwent' did a lot of work on Strabane orphan girls. He'd be worth contacting, and I'm sure happy to help.

best of luck for 2008

Hi Trev

Have had a copy of your book for years. Got me started on the whole Eliza research thing. Even managed to track down a photo of her, which I have passed on to Cheryl Mongan, whom I guess you would know.

I would be more than happy to give you any information I can, and also happy to receive the name of the Derwent contact. Would you like my photo of Eliza Sharkey? There is a Mary Sharkey from Omagh, also. I wonder if she could be a relative.

Eliza's story is quite amazing once she hit Australia, but aren't they all?

I actually went to Strabane some years ago to do some research but couldn't find out much about Eliza. Still, it was nice to tread the soil. And I did find out a great deal about my paternal Barrett ancestry so all was not lost.

Thanks for your help.

Hello all,
My GG Grandmother, Eliza Ewings was also a Diadem girl, aged 15 and born in Armagh, Northern Ireland. She arrived 12 Jan 1850 and eventually married William Pentland. They had many children and eventually settled in the Loy Yang area and Traralgon.

Hi Chrissy,
Elizabeth Sharkey is my great great great Grandmother. Her daughter Mary Anne Garment (1859-1939) married Peter Brown and they had a daughter Eva Jane (?-1974)
Eva married John Johnson (?-1916) and had a daughter Irene Isabell (1914-1983).
Irene married Reginald Woods in 1939 and they had 2 children, one of them my mother Yvonne (1939-).
I only started reserching today and hope 6 years later you pick up this thread.
