Can someone tell me if a "crest" is different from a "Coat of Arms"?
For Scotland, I realize there is the Campbell Coat of Arms for the Breadalbane lineage, the Argyll lineage etc.
My gggGrandfather, Peter Campbell, emigrated from Loch Tayside, Scotland to Canada in 1817. His daughter wrote back to Scotland (the Registrar's office; Lord Lyon?) for their personal family crest.
The crest is that of a raised fist holding an arrow or spear pointing downwards to the left. Surrounding this image is a scroll with Latin. It translates as "Arms To Dare The Bold".
Was it common for a particular lineage to have a personal family crest? Is a genealogy registered with the crest? The reason I ask is I wonder if I could obtain this official genealogy from Scotland? She had received this information in the 19th Century and this crest has been handed down for many generations engraved in sterling silver on a large type tray or plaque.
Thank you kindly for any information.
