Sorry, but that's incorrect information. Not relatively rare occasions at all - this was a standard practice for the eldest son to inherit his father's arms on the demise of his father.
During the lifetime of his father he also used his father's arms but debruised with a temporary label of three points which was removed on his inheriting his father's arms.
Second and subsequent sons also used their father's arms but with an added permanent 'cadency mark' to denote the pecking order of the cadet branches of the family.
