I have found a wonderful photograph in a tri-fold mat of a male subject taken by the female photographer Gertrude Patterson Carpenter of Petersburg, Pike Co., Indiana.
Does anyone know anything about her or her family, and would anyone have an interest in the photo?

Around 1902 Patterson Studio opened in Petersburg with a young couple, Robert D. and Gertrude (Mitchell) Patterson as photographers and owners. After Robert died Gertrude continued the business. She worked as a photographer and artist for over sixty years. A good example of her work can be seen at Barrett Memorial Library where a portrait she did of Edith Barrett is on display. Another beautiful picture done by her of Emaline Thornton hangs in the Pike county Museum.
Patterson was the photographer who did most of the Senior pictures for the High Schools in Pike County.
Without knowing the subject of the photograph in your possession it yould be hard to link it to a family. The museum has several of these "unidentified photographs" which people are allowed to go through in an attempt to identify family members. We would be glad to add this one to the collection there with whatever information you can give us such as whose possession it was in and the location where it was found. Just a few weeks ago a lady came in with some of her family pictures and was able to positively identify several pictures in an album someone donated to the museum several years ago from a box of books they had purchased at an auction. We gladly made her copies of the ones she did not have in exchange.

Thank you for your reply! Did Gertrude have any children that might be interested in this photograph, and how did she end of with the last name of CARPENTER? I was hoping to place it with a family member who would like a collection of her work. This photograph is very striking and if you would like an image of it emailed to you, just send me that request in an email document to: VMarta @aol.com

Marta

According to the family history she never had any children, but did have several nieces and nephews. Her first husband, Robert Patterson died after ten years of marriage and she remarried later to Bertis Warren. The location of her studio was for several years in what was known as "The Carpenter Building."
I found one of the great-nephews listed in the family history living in Petersburg according to the phone book. If you want that information I will e-mail it to you as I would not post someone's name and number on the Internet.

As an addition to the above information I ran across a newspaper account which read as follows:
Wedded at Louisville. Harry W. Carpenter and Mrs. Gertrude Patterson went to Louisville, Ky., last week where they were joined in marriage on Friday. Mr. Carpenter is a practicing attorney and served as prosecuting attorney for this district. The bride has been engaged in photography in this city for a number of years. (Pike County Democrat, May 28, 1914, page 1)
Just goes to prove that even a bibliography written by a family member can have mistakes and/or leave out information which may be important to another researcher. There was no mention of this marriage in her family history written in Histories and Families, Pike county, Indiana 1817-1987.

I grew up with two of Gertrude's nephews, Fred and General Robert Mitchell, who, at last I knew, headed the Indiana National Guard. "Tub" as Fred has always been known, still lives in Petersburg. I don't know if he would be interested, but he might have an idea as to the identity of the picture's subject. (She also took my senior pictures and I used to live a block from her studio on 9th Street).

Thanks, Leanne! I would like to know the identity of the subject in the photo, as someone in his family might be interested in the photo for their family album.
