Yes there are records. Go to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA.gov) and they will help you out. Also, here on ancestry if you do a search for Civilian Conservation Corps you will find an entire wealth of information.

I have a picture of a CCCCamp dated 7/23/1936. I believe my father is in this picture, but would love to find proof that he was indeed there, also when & how long. It also says on the picture: CCCCo. #3228; Camp-P-48; Camp Bridgehead; Coram, MT. I also have a picture taken at Camp Daniel Boone; CCCCo. 1262; T.V.A.-17-Arthur Tenn.;July 1934
Are there personnel records out there that show the names of the people who were at these camps?

I would like to know more about his time there as my parents were divorced when I was a child.

Do you know if this is correct? Oddly enough I can't really find any information on this particular camp. Thank you again for the help! -- Stephanie F.

I grew up in Newbridge. Newbridge is a community name not a town. My grandfather and great-grandfather also worked for the CCC. One thing I know they did was work on Beaver Lake. As I understand they planted trees (that now line Merrimon Ave going alongside the lake and set rocks in the bank to spell "Beaver Lake." I don't know much about the workings of the CCC but I know alot about Newbridge. My husband's grandfather lived in Asheville at the time and remembers it being "at New Bridge." I've also been told that this area is where Newbridge Baptist Church is now located in Asheville. I cannot find anything about what the men worked on at this camp, however. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Stephanie F

My father in-law Tony Garcia was in the CCC camps 1937-1938. When I went to ask him questions about his time in the CCC camps he was nice enough to lend me his "Official Aunnaul 1938 Civilian Conservation Corp book of the Medford District Ninth Corps Area". The book is actually like a year book. It has pictures of groups of men (and their names) as well as pictures of men working on different projects in the various CCC camps through out Oregon and California. If you are doing research for your family and know that your family member was a member of a CCC camp in Oregon or California in 1938 and would like a copy of a picture in this group I would be happy to send it to you.
My father in-law was in the 919th company in Pollock, California. If you have any info about this CCC camp I would be happy to hear about it.

Your welcome.

In the 1930's camp locations were described by the nearest railhead and post office.

SCS-2 Company #259 was formed October 25, 1935. Nearest railhead and post office was Freehold and the camp was located: Monmouth 5 mi.

SCS means it was a soil conservation camp. Was there erosion near the pond? Just speculating but, perhaps they did receive the pine trees from from another CCC camp, that was a dedicated tree nursery camp which may have been located in NY state.

kd

Being older helps, other told me about the CCC. The pines trees were not native to this area, which started my questioning, the pine needle branches weep like a weeping willow and loses all the needles in the fall. Why the CCC planted, that I could never find out.

The CCC camp was what is now Glendale Drive, Freehold Twp., off Robertsville Road. The worked on the "Pond" and other sites, not Monmouth County Battefield site. The only remaining proof if the tall weeping pine trees that were planted by them, native to Northern NY, not NJ.
JoMac,
Here's an article that might interest you.

"When the Veterans Came to Vermont"

http://www.vermonthistory.org/journal/73/06_Patton.pdf

Perhaps he was associated with the Wrightsville Dam which is mentioned on page 12 of the document above. The Veterans CCC "boys" had it pretty hard in the 1930's and the work they did in Vermont was extremely important. Your grandfather was fortunate to have found such a good position.

This is all a guess but ..
In a quick look for a CCC camp in Freehold, NJ- there was one in Monmouth which is abt. 1/2 mile from Freehold. It was CCC Camp SCS-2, Company #259. Not sure but nearby is the Monmouth Battleground Park from the Revolutionary War. Some CCC camps were at National Military Parks.

An avenue you might consider researching would be to contact the historical societies and the state or national parks nearby where you think he may have been located at.

To get you started:
Monmouth County Historical Society. http://www.monmouthhistory.org/Sections-read-12.html

Monmouth Battlefield State Park
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/monbat.html

kd

Thanks for your reply, kd.

He enlisted in Red Bank, NJ, in May 1933. His address at his first assignment was S. F. Co. 2208, V. C. C. C., Plattsburg Barracks, NY. That was Jun/Jul 1933. He wrote in a letter that he believed they were going to be sent to a flood district in Vermont to do relief work. All the "fellows" in the whole camp were World War veterans, as was he (Rainbow Division). Later, he says he's just heard they might end up in Montana but didn't know if that was true or not.

His next letter (Oct 1933) was from Camp Cushing, Montpelier, VT, where he was a sergeant in charge of an ambulance unit.

In 1936, he was senior foreman of the CCC camp at Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ, according to a newspaper article, and was made the manager of the basketball team representing the camp.

Then, by 1942, he was superintendent of labor at Picatinny Arsenal at Hackettstown, NJ. The newspaper article says he had been in the U. S. Conservation service for the last 5 years and was transferred to the arsenal.

JoMac,
I suspect the reason you can not locate your grandfathers CCC records is because he was not signed up through the Army or the Social Service boards. Hence the CPRC will not have a record.
If he were a foreman he was possibly hired by the CCC camp Superintendent and paid directly from the CCC camp funds. His records would have been held at the camp and information sent to the District Headquarters for their files.
What was the state/county/town of his CCC camp?

kd
Civilian Conservation Corps Records:

ATTENTION: AS OF June 2009, there is a now a fee to request the official enrollment papers. Five or fewer pages $20 - Six and more pages $60. Notification of fee amount will be returned to you during the request process.

Until June of this year, CCC men and family members could request copies of CCC discharges from the center at no charge. The only stipulation was family members had to send proof of death with the request.

In June, CCC records held in the name of the CCC by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), were transferred to the custody of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). With this transfer, the cost of researching these records once paid by OPM will now be passed on to the requester.

These fees are authorized under the 44 U.S.C. 2116 (c) which authorizes NARA to charge a fee to the public for making or authenticating copies or reproduction of material transferred to the NARA’s custody.

Fee schedule: Five and fewer pages is $20.00; Six and more pages is $60.00. It should be noted that most CCC records are more than five pages so requesters can generally expect a fee of $60.00.

Death certificates are no longer needed to request information on deceased CCC employees; however, if you send the certificate you are more likely to get more information.

CCC Records contain personal information confidential to enrollees. The CCC records are on microfilm and contain many records on each film. Even though the records are now public, each record must undergo screening for sensitive information in accordance with the personal privacy exemption of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), U.S.C.552 (b) (6), before it can be released. Screening every record on a film is not feasible, so the decision was made that visitors to the public research room would not be able to review the films in person.

Things you need to know to request:

Enrollee name: Last, First, Middle or, nickname
Birth date:
Branch of Service: Civilian Conservation Corps
Separation Date:
Location of the camp (if known):

Proof of death is no longer required, it can help to expedite the process.

Make a copy your request for your file. Sign and date your request and mail to:

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
National Personnel Records Center
111 Winnebago Street
St. Louis, MO 63118
Phone: (314)801-9250
Fax:(314)801-9270

Fax requests will be accepted at 314-801-9269 but a signature must be included. Notification of fees and payment methods will be sent to the requester as part of the case processing.

For additional information on civilian records visit the website.
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/civilian personnel/index.html

The military records information can be obtained by visiting
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/

Re: CCC Camps in Montana

Hi Peggy - I saw your note about Montana CCC and wanted to share with you my interest. My father, Louis Agresti, from Syracuse NY went to Montana when he was about 18 years old in 1933. I do not know how long he was there or where his camp was located. I also have one pix of him at camp.

I'll look for it and scan it for you if you care to receive it.

Dave Agresti
profpuzzle@msn.com
Tampa, Fl

CCC Camps in Montana

I am looking for which camp my father was at while in Montana. All I have is a black and white photo of the tent camp in a clearing surrounded by tall trees, and just wrote montana on the back.

He was from NYC so I guess that he where he was sent.
I found tons of information on this board and will send for the records of CCC and his military medals history. It's a shame they did not want to talk of that time especially after WWII but I understand it.

Look forward to any help and responses.
Peggy

Hi,
Just rereading these postings and not sure if you had any success? Anyway, one of the reasons it had been hard for me to find information on my father initially was because he enlisted in the CCC and army under his nickname - Jack. I can't imagine that they didn't use his first name. So when I wrote the first few times they couldn't find him. I found two news articles in our local paper and in the articles they called him Jack, rather than Thomas. From the newspaper I was able to give a bit more information on where he was during the war and I applied again using the name Jack and BINGO they found the records.

Hello,
If you look at my posting from Sept 2, 2006, you will see the information and address that I used to get information on my father and the CCC. As I mentioned, I knew virtually nothing except where he was located - Idaho. The information they sent were all the records they had on him - copies that had been typed on ditto paper. But the information was fascinating, and I also learned he was inducted into the army (WWII) in Idaho, which I didn't know. It also told me about days he was in the infirmary, what he did in CCC... After receiving this information I was also able to figure out enough information to order his 'replacement' army medals. No charge for the CCC information or medals. Must be one of the only things the government does for free! Good luck!
