The first skunks I remember seeing was when I was a bout 5 years old. I was tagging along with my daddy while he was squirell hunting and a mother skunk and her babies were meandering along through an apple orchard. They were so cute and didn't seem afraid that I wanted to catch one of them. Daddy didn't think that was a good idea.

When you lived in the county you just as well get used to the odor of skunks in the school room because most of the boys would hunt them for their skins. You could get 75 cents to a dollar for a good hide. The blacker they were the better price they brought.
Anyway a cousin and I were hunting one night and the dog bayed a skunk. I had always heard that if you held one up by the tail he couldn't throw the scent so I ran in and grabbed the skunk and yelled" shoot him John" He said shoot him hell he is ---------all over me. He went backward through a blackberry vine patch that he wouldn't to have even thought about trying during the day. I don't think either of us went to school the next day and I can't remember what happened to the skunk.

Mother had a little dog,Frisky, that she thought the world of and it stayed in the house most of the time. Really Frisky stayed anywhere he wantd and on the morning in question I was walking mother to the mailbox. It was about 4:30 in the morning and she was going to catch a ride with Uncle Dexter to Roanoke. Well, Frisky and my dog bayed a skunk and mother about had a fit because Frisky was going to get polecat on him. That time when I picked up the skunk he filled my eyes full of the scent. I now know why dogs will rub their eyes on the ground after they have been sprayed other went the rest of the way by herself and I got.another day off from school

We had only been married a couple weeks when I was 'upon the hill' setting out some tobacco plants when I heard Velta calling for me. She said a ground hog was after her. When I got to where I could see there was a skunk patting the ground getting ready to throw its scent at the slighest provocation. I got her to back away real easy and the skunk went on it's way

J. P. Weeks told me he had heard about people running over the skunks with a car and thought he would try it if the opportunity presented it's self. He was on his way to Floyd, in his dad's car, one night and a skunk was running alongside the road. He ran over the skunk but then got hung up on top of it. I don't remember how he said he got unstuck
