Superstitions

My family whom I am quite certain came to America by way of Northern Ireland during the Ulster-Scot immigrations of the 1700's, were Always very superstitious.
Don't shake the table cloth out after the sun goes down
Don't make plans on Sunday
Never pass the salt shaker at the table directly to someone (hand to hand) without setting it on the table first and letting them pick it up.
Always throw salt over your left shoulder for luck and Especially if you spilled the salt shaker.

If a mourning dove landed on the roof of our house my Nana would have a fit and run outside waving her arms and shooing it away because that meant a death in the family.

Never put a hat on a bed
Never rock an empty rocking chair
Only stir the pot in a clockwise direction
On and on the list goes.
Are these common Irish superstitions or just something that was in my family? All of them were and those still living Are still this way today. Just wondering if these were traditions brought over with them from Ireland.
Thanks

Exactly! Those were in there too. There were so many of them in my family its hard to recall them all and different family members had different superstitions that I didn't hear as often, so I'm sure I've forgotten a few.
My family I am quite certain came from Scottish roots orig. and then to Northern Ireland and then to Maine, USA in the 1700's.
They sure do have Many of the characteristics and traditions from those two cultures. Even though I can't find my missing family links, my "gut instincts" tell me this is where our roots are.

Put your shoes with the toes pointing under the bed so the fairies don't mess up your hair at night.

Never put new shoes on a table, its bad luck.

Those are the only two I can remember that I have not seen already mentioned.

(other than the obvious, when the bugs come in it means rain is coming. when the gulls move inland a storm is on its way)
