Raw Hide and Bloody Bones
When I was a child in east Ky. and my Grandma didn't want to argue with me about going outside where she couldn't watch me, she would scare me by saying, "Don't go out there! Raw Hide and Bloody Bones will get you!" I don't know where this saying originated. Anybody else ever heard it? She was Scots-Irish.

Re: Raw Hide and Bloody Bones
YES! Our great granny used to drape a white sheet, turkey feathers, and chicken blood over her head and body and scare all of her grandchildren. She'd be shrieking RAW HIDE AND BLOODY BONES the entire time! She was from eastern TN by way of Powhatan, AR (northcentral Arkansas)

Re: Raw Hide and Bloody Bones
I wonder what the origin of the "Raw Hide and Bloody Bones" saying was??? Does anyone know if it was part of a folk tale or piece of literature?
What year was this when your granny scared you? Was she Scots-Irish? I always thought it was a very old saying, but I'm not sure.

Re: Raw Hide and Bloody Bones
I grew up hearing stories about Raw Hide and Bloody Bones. We had no real entertainment at night other than a radio and lots of imaginative tales from the old folks. My ancestry came from the Carolinas and I'm sure these stories spread to many other areas.

Re: Raw Hide and Bloody Bones
I grew up in south central ky and have hear the term bloody bones to threaten a child into behaving. We also had the pleasure of our parents and grandparents telling us that "Scratch-Eyes" would get us if we were bad! Don't know where that came from but it always worked on us!!
